I walked out of Walmart this a.m. purchased six boxes of 308, had to show drivers license no big deal SOP HOWEVER, the clerk typed my DL # into the computer, I asked why, she said, the feds are requiring them to track all ammo sales no, are they doing this in your area or did someone shoot me a line????

i purchased a couple boxes fo 30-06 at a sw fl walmart the week before last and then didnt ask to see anything.

In Illinois you have to have a FOID card to buy ammo. The register tells the clerk to check your FOID and won't go any farther till they enter a code saying they have checked it.

My guess is you are seeing something similar.

Here in Western KY the only thing the walmarts ask is if the ammo is for a handgun or rifle (if appropriate for the caliber). No requests for DL #'s ever - yet.

I bought two boxes of 38 spl. in the Hendersonville TN. Walmart a couple of weeks ago and they asked me for my DL as well (she didn't just look at age but entered my DL # into their system - never had that happen before).

It's probably a way for the store to do some CYA and be sure that the employee actually checked your ID. When I used to work in retail, my store's computer system made the employee enter the ID # when anyone bought alcohol. They figured that if the employee had to actually enter the ID number, they could be absolutely sure that he/she really did ask for ID. If the employee could just hit a yes/no button, they could get lazy and not really check the ID. By being certain that the employee really checked the customer's ID, the store could avoid lawsuits stemming from someone underage buying booze.

I've purchased ammo a couple of times in the past two weeks at two different Walmarts.....they didn't ask for my driver's license. Just the standard "rifle or pistol" question.
I can't recall anytime in the past few years that I was asked to show my driver's license to purchase ammunition (except online for age verification).
Sounds like an individual local Walmart policy to me.

Like I said, just wanted to see what was going on elsewhere, the clerk seemed knowledgeable and was specific about it being a Fed requirement so, just wanted to check out other areas of the country. Again, not trying to start an anti walmart thread or flame thread, just curious about your areas. Thanks for the input

There is no federal law that requires a customer's drivers license or any other information be recorded for ammunition sales. As a store policy they may somestimes check I.D. to determine age.

Walmart signed on to a plan set up by anti-gun New York City Mayor Bloomberg, and some (perhaps all for all I know) are setting up a system of recording gun and ammunition sales. This may go so far as video-recording gun sales and providing Bloomburg's orginzation information concerning sales and customer's private data that could be kept in a private database.

Bloomberg's plan has no legal standing, but those that buy guns and ammunition at Walmart should be aware that private information may no longer be private, especially if they are ask for identification that wasn't required in the past.

In some places there might be a state or local law that requires that an ammunition buyer submit a drivers license, and the number be recorded. However if this is the case, all ammunition sellers will be doing the same thing. :uhoh:

If you aren't sure, demand to see the store manager, and get an explanation of exactly what and why they are doing whatever it is.

A "FEDERAL" requirement would apply to all retail sales (of ammo) regardless of city or state or retailer. Sounds like more WM CYA to me.

are they doing this in your area or did someone shoot me a line????

The clerk shot you a line.

I've purchased ammo in three states in recent months. No ID. No nothin' but cash. ;)

"Feds are requiring it" is easier than saying "I dunno" and arguing with the customer over it.
Exactly. And why bother arguing with a non-helpful register drone?
Heck, I had a friendly register operator at the ammo counter yesterday, and I wandered in at the right time to pick up .22 ammo (4 Federal 550 packs and a box of 22 short CB) but sadly 15 minutes too late to snag any 9mm.
When asked, "is this ammo was for a handgun?" I couldn't help myself ... pointed to the 4 boxes, said "this one is for a pistol, and this one is for a rifle, and this one is for a Gatling gun, and this one is for a macaroni picture, and by the way where is the construction paper and Elmer's glue?" After that, I didn't get asked for ID, so your register drone was just following the prompts and deflected your question rather than answering it.

Wal-Mart conspiracy theories are a depressing symptom of how dependent we have all become on WM. What would they have done if you didn't have a Driver's License? There are other legit forms of ID, and not everyone over 21 bothers to get a DL, you know.
If you don't like it, buy ammo elsewhere, I buy much more ammo outside the blue box of trailer supply than inside ... but I expect some hassle whenever I venture in there, just due to their crappy hiring and training policies.

No federal, state or other, I could find from ATF law in place concerning this.

What probably was going on was the recordation of your information for purchase limits or most likely the CYA thing WalMart does.

It is not a violation of any type for them to do such an act, call the home company and ask them to why such actions took place.

Then... let us know!:D

they did it for about a week after i turned 18 then the guy at the counter just handed me the ammo and took my cash lol i guess 4 trips per week gets u known

I've been asked to show a DL to prove im over 18, thats it and it was at Meijer so its pretty much the same as Walmart.

Being in the firearms business ourselves we have heard this numeorus times from customers who experienced it.

I couldn't wait... curiosity got the best of me and I called Wally World corporate and put the question to them.

They said, "That they are required to solicit identification from all persons purchasing HANDGUN ammunition but they(WalMart)are NOT required to do so for the purchase of rifle ammo".

"However WalMart is required, by law, to abide by LOCAL and or STATE laws and ordinances. And the store in question may have been adhering to such laws and or ordinances".

May have been a local thing or just a miss informed(trained) clerk.
