That's a beautiful short barrel Security-Six and the way you've got her polished up. some wood grips would enhance it even more. The Hogue's are great for shooting......but, wood is the way to go for "Beauty"!I want some nice wood grips! I've tired of my hogues
1)I like the heavy barrel-as I have one Speed-Six with the 2-3/4" HB and I love the way it shoots. The only 3" barrel I have is a 1988 Speed-Six-but, this one hasn't yet been fired.I'm still working on the polishing, but looks good so far. And yeah, its the 2 3/4. I've been thing about a 4 or 6. If I found something at a good price maybe, blued would be different.
I agree that those Eagle grips look great on your snubbie Security-Six(The gun is nice, too!)! Although, I've never tried any Eagle grips on my "Sixes", I might want to obtain some Eagle Secret Service grips to sample them?
The grips were the original grips that had shipped from Ruger on the gun!
1)If your Security-Six has an 150 serial number prefix, it wouldn't have been made in the 1980's. Approximately, only the first 100,000 "Six Series" revolvers produced were of the old frame(Low back)variety(150 s/n prefix)then, around 1976, the New frame(High back) began appearing(151 s/n prefix). There were some transitional guns as well, where you'd see some new frame guns with the old frame(150 s/n prefix)stamped on them.If given a choice of which one of my handguns to have in a bad situation, I'd take my Sec. 6 over any of the rest. The main reason being that I shoot straight with it and I'm sure it's gonna go bang. The mod. 14 S&W runs a very close 2nd, but with .38+P's in the Ruger I'm still more likely to hit the target. The guy at the gun store still swears it has never been re blued. This is one time in 2 yrs. I'm positive he's lieing. Absolutely no sign of wear anywhere on the steel (not even on the top of the front site) with a serial #beginning with 150-? (I could be mistaken but I think it was made in the 80's)so I don't think so. Especially since the grips show a lot of use. I admit paying too much for it but I like it so much I wouldn't sell it back at the same price. Although I would consider a trade for your PS 6 Mr. slick6. lol That's really nice.
That would date it as having been made in 1972 (first year of production): http://www.ruger.com/service/productHistory/RE-SPSSix.htmlSo I guess I'm not sure of the exact date, even though I may be repeating myself from another thread. The ser. # is 150-335xx,
1)gb6491 has given you the correct date of 1972 for your Security Six.I was also fooled by the 8-8-5 etched (more like scratched) on the bottom of the grip. I guess I wrongly assumed it was made in 85. So I guess I'm not sure of the exact date, even though I may be repeating myself from another thread. The ser. # is 150-335xx, made in Southport, Conn. Also there is absolutely no bluing on the sides of the trigger or hammer. I'm assuming.... again that they have been replaced. But along with the fact that there is no metal showing anywhere else on the gun it has obviously been reblued. Maybe I shouldn't complain about that. I just don't like being bs'd. lol
Except for the 6" barrel it looks like mine. The rear site notch on mine is hilighted in white. Another thing that I wonder about....shouldn't the #on the cylinder correspond with the number on the frame? And I found out yesterday that I do not have the original grips. The had been replaced with after market synthetic grips, and after the gun was sold by the owner (who kept the originals), the new owner put grips from another security six on them from a gun that wasn't treated with the same care. Now I know why the condition of the grips don't match the condition of the gun. The more I get back into this stuff, the more ignorant I feel. I have had good luck with a lot of my purchases this past year or so.....but my lack of knowledge has also led to me getting shafted on a couple of "great deals".1)gb6491 has given you the correct date of 1972 for your Security Six.
2)The early Security-Six didn't have bluing on the sides of the hammer and trigger-as they only had bluing on on the top and rear of the hammer and on both the front and back of the trigger. If your Security-Six looks like that-then the hammer and trigger are factory original. Following, is a photo of my NIB early 150 series 6" Security-six-and, you will observe there's no bluing on the sides of the hammer and the trigger!:
