I want some nice wood grips! I've tired of my hogues

That's a beautiful short barrel Security-Six and the way you've got her polished up. some wood grips would enhance it even more. The Hogue's are great for shooting......but, wood is the way to go for "Beauty"!

THANKS! I know, the rubber grips just don’t do anything for it visually. I'd like some plain un-checkered grips with a low profile. Here is another shot

1)well, it sure looks great! It must have taken you awhile to obtain that nicely done polishing job!

2)From your picture it looks like you have a 3" heavy barrel-does it measure 3"? If not-then, it's still a standard 2-3/4"-except for being a heavy barrel!

I'm still working on the polishing, but looks good so far. And yeah, its the 2 3/4. I've been thing about a 4 or 6. If I found something at a good price maybe, blued would be different.

1)I like the heavy barrel-as I have one Speed-Six with the 2-3/4" HB and I love the way it shoots. The only 3" barrel I have is a 1988 Speed-Six-but, this one hasn't yet been fired.

2)A blue Security-Six would look nice if in like new condition-because, I think that the bluing quality was pretty good on these guns. But, being out in the field could damage the blue finish-or, should I say, would give it some character.

3)I kinda regret passing up a mint stainless Security-Six about a year ago-because, now, you can't find these so easily!

4)I believe that the Security-Sixes are such good guns, that I'd give up most of my other Branded revolvers before I'd choose to get rid of any of my Security/Speed/Service-Six revolvers!

For the 2 3/4" Security Six, the best grips I have found are the Eagle Secret Service.

The factory target grips as well as Hogue and Pachmayr seem to big, but the Eagles are just right.

I agree that those Eagle grips look great on your snubbie Security-Six(The gun is nice, too!)! Although, I've never tried any Eagle grips on my "Sixes", I might want to obtain some Eagle Secret Service grips to sample them?

For me, the factory Ruger target grips fit just fine in my medium-large hands-quite unlike Smith & Wesson K-Frame target grips-which are bulkier than these. Here are some photo's of the Ruger target grips on my 2-3/4" Police Service-Six:

I passed one of these up at the local gun show right when the gun grabbing started. The guy want $350.00 for it and I thought it was too high. I went back the next month and it was long gone.
:(

Very nice, Cranky! How does your "Baby" shoot? Do you like shooting it with the Hogue "Bootie's" pn it? Your Security-Six looks to be in great condition! That was a nice pawn shop find! We can't buy guns in pawn shops here in California-as guns were banned a few years ago in pawn shops! Therefore, we are stuck paying higher gun shop prices for guns bought here!

Just got it today, haven't shot it yet. About a third of my guns I have gotten out of this particular pawnshop, he really only carries decent used guns. Talking to the salesmen, he told me he just put it out that morning. Pretty much a flawless gun, few rounds have been shot out of it judging by the looks of it. I had been looking at the GP100, but saw this one, handled it, liked it, went and looked at the gp100 again then went back and got it.

Paid $150 less than a new SS GP100 here locally, maybe paid a little high for it but I liked the way it felt so I went for it. You don't see them much around here and from what I have read around the internet there values are holding or rising a bit. I'm happy so thats all that counts.

Some nice looking wheelguns in this thread for sure.

I currently have a stainless Police Service Six .357. One of these days I will run across a nice Security Six and will snap it up to keep the PSS company.

The grips were the original grips that had shipped from Ruger on the gun!

I bought mine in 1978 and it came with much skimpier grips than those. I never saw grips like that, nice. I put a hogue on mine, old nylon one. I traded it off for a Blackhawk. I sometimes wish I had it back, but I prefer K frames and my Taurus 66s. They're more accurate than that gun was and much easier on my hand in recoil. That Six really had some muzzle flip.

I had a great trigger job on that thing and sometimes think I shouldn't have traded it, but I like that Blackhawk a lot, so I guess for me the trade worked. I've got a couple of Blackhawks and like them as outdoor guns. The one I traded the six for is a 6.5" blued .357 magnum. It's a shooter and I've taken a few hog and deer with it over the years. I traded for it in the late 80s.

If given a choice of which one of my handguns to have in a bad situation, I'd take my Sec. 6 over any of the rest. The main reason being that I shoot straight with it and I'm sure it's gonna go bang. The mod. 14 S&W runs a very close 2nd, but with .38+P's in the Ruger I'm still more likely to hit the target. The guy at the gun store still swears it has never been re blued. This is one time in 2 yrs. I'm positive he's lieing. Absolutely no sign of wear anywhere on the steel (not even on the top of the front site) with a serial #beginning with 150-? (I could be mistaken but I think it was made in the 80's)so I don't think so. Especially since the grips show a lot of use. I admit paying too much for it but I like it so much I wouldn't sell it back at the same price. Although I would consider a trade for your PS 6 Mr. slick6. lol That's really nice.

1)If your Security-Six has an 150 serial number prefix, it wouldn't have been made in the 1980's. Approximately, only the first 100,000 "Six Series" revolvers produced were of the old frame(Low back)variety(150 s/n prefix)then, around 1976, the New frame(High back) began appearing(151 s/n prefix). There were some transitional guns as well, where you'd see some new frame guns with the old frame(150 s/n prefix)stamped on them.

2)Thanks for the compliment on my Police Service-Six!

I was also fooled by the 8-8-5 etched (more like scratched) on the bottom of the grip. I guess I wrongly assumed it was made in 85. So I guess I'm not sure of the exact date, even though I may be repeating myself from another thread. The ser. # is 150-335xx, made in Southport, Conn. Also there is absolutely no bluing on the sides of the trigger or hammer. I'm assuming.... again that they have been replaced. But along with the fact that there is no metal showing anywhere else on the gun it has obviously been reblued. Maybe I shouldn't complain about that. I just don't like being bs'd. lol

1)gb6491 has given you the correct date of 1972 for your Security Six.

2)The early Security-Six didn't have bluing on the sides of the hammer and trigger-as they only had bluing on on the top and rear of the hammer and on both the front and back of the trigger. If your Security-Six looks like that-then the hammer and trigger are factory original. Following, is a photo of my NIB early 150 series 6" Security-six-and, you will observe there's no bluing on the sides of the hammer and the trigger!:

Except for the 6" barrel it looks like mine. The rear site notch on mine is hilighted in white. Another thing that I wonder about....shouldn't the #on the cylinder correspond with the number on the frame? And I found out yesterday that I do not have the original grips. The had been replaced with after market synthetic grips, and after the gun was sold by the owner (who kept the originals), the new owner put grips from another security six on them from a gun that wasn't treated with the same care. Now I know why the condition of the grips don't match the condition of the gun. The more I get back into this stuff, the more ignorant I feel. I have had good luck with a lot of my purchases this past year or so.....but my lack of knowledge has also led to me getting shafted on a couple of "great deals".

Been looking for the same thing for a while. I find them blued all over but SS is hard to come by in 4". My dad had one he bought in the early 80's. It was stolen in a home burglary about 10 years ago. He mentions it every time I show up with a new gun or we go to the range. His birthday is in September, I hope to find one by then.

I picked up this guy at a pawn shop sometime in the late '70s / early '80s. It was probably only a year or two old at the time, but already had holster wear marks on the blue. I added the pachmeyer presentations since the grip was on the small side for me.
