Nothing in my house is worth dying for!

One obvious translation: "Come Back Later for the Guns".

Targets in the trash can say the same thing. Discard them at the range.

I think things have deteriorated. When I was growing up, a friend's war trophy G43 rifle sat for many years on pegs so high on the wall that it could be seen above the drapes from a busy street. It was never touched by a burglar or thief. Today, I imagine it would disappear in three or four days.

I mean, with all those ADT or Brinks signs reading "Make sure you disable the alarm system before breaking in", the chances of being burglarized don't seem to be all that elevated.

I wonder about those alarm signs too.

Wonder if anyone has ever done a study of convicts to get some idea of the deterrent value of the alarm signs. Seems like there wouldn't be much but they litter all the neighborhoods around me. Seems like 75%+ of the houses have a couple of those signs.

I don't have one, wonder if the bad guys think my house is a better target? They would be very wrong. I have an alarm, I just have a teenage boy who ran over the sign with my lawnmower....

all time favorite sign

I'm not sure what deterrent effect posting a security sign would have, but there was a string of burglaries in my suburban neighborhood a few years ago, and every house that was broken into had an ADT or Broadview sign out in front (about half of them do around here). :scrutiny: Each entry was made through the front door, some of which were unlocked (geez, I'm guessing that they didn't actually bother with the security system either  ), and the others were kicked in easily enough. None of these incidents were home invasions (i.e. with residents present), thank goodness, but more recently there was an attempted home invasion just a couple of houses away from mine, which was thwarted by the owner; it seemed that the would-be burglar had thought that the house was deserted and took off when he discovered otherwise. Yes, that house has a security sign, too.

While I have a minimal system that I installed myself, it's not monitored remotely by a security company, and I don't have any signage whatsoever in my front yard. A few months after the aforementioned string of burglaries, somebody tried to kick my front door in at around 2:30 am, but gave up after a bunch of attempts. All of my external doors were reinforced, and while this wouldn't have kept out somebody who was determined to get in at any cost, in this case it prevented a home invasion that probably would have ended with a lot of frazzled nerves and a dead or seriously injured burglar. It's hard to describe the layout, but I was waiting for him right by the door (I sleep lightly and my bedroom is not far from the door) and would have been able to attack him from behind had he successfully entered (he was alone, as far as I could see, but these guys do often operate in groups). I didn't own a gun at the time, but in all honesty I have great bat speed. :) Since then, I've further hardened my home against invasions and upgraded my armament, of course.

Obviously, I or other family members could have been killed, but all I remember thinking about at the time was beating the burglar's brains out before he even knew what hit him. Fortunately, I didn't have to do anything that night. I guess I got this trait from my mom, who also gets extremely aggressive when she's threatened. Trying to keep a long story reasonably short, back in the "old country" she got fed up with taking physical and verbal abuse from an older brother of hers (her mother had passed away and her father was away on business), and one day when he smacked her around again and threatened to kill her because his life apparently sucked so much, without a word she attacked him with a chair and beat him unconscious. When he woke up he was at knifepoint and now on the receiving end of similar threats, so he moved out of the house, joined the army, was reportedly captured by Communists, and was never heard from again. My mom was glad to be rid of him, and told me that he was very lucky to have escaped an even worse fate at her hands. It's funny how my life has to a large degree paralleled hers in certain ways, despite living in a very different country now. We never look for trouble, but it always manages to find us anyway, and all we can do is become more vicious and savage than our enemies whenever we're forced to.

Anyway, as for visual deterrents, since security signs don't seem to be particularly effective, at least from what I've seen, perhaps the following would make some burglars look elsewhere: ;)

I like the biohazard sign, adding a "gun" sign to you're window is just ASKING FOR TOUBLE. I would put a geiger counter next to that sign :D you can get them cheap. I would think about putting a " gun sign" on my backdoor, no one goes there so I would think its safe. But just having it on the front door anyone can see it.. thats just asking for trouble.

IF you watch karate kid 2 there is a sceen in there where the kid says "I anit looking for trouble." And the bad guy replys, "but maybe trouble is looking for you."

I bought a house that had a security system installed, but the monitoring contract had expired. Didn't bother renewing it as every ad I have ever seen for home security services makes them look even worse than 911. The one with the lady whose ex-significant-other busted in the door is especially choice: The door alarm goes off and the security company calls her to see if all is well. In the ad, the alarm scares the ex off, but in the real world, that's not always the case and the crime clock is ticking. If her ex is that much of a loon, she didn't need Broadview; she needed Smith & Wesson!

Even if I am away, my wife is well-armed and is pretty darn good with her 14-shot Browning. But we don't see any point in advertising that we have guns.

While I do LOVE these types of signs...

I dunno; to me it looks like a sign saying, "I have guns so break in while I'm away."

I prefer more of a stealth mode, if you will.

I too will so with stealth mode. And besides, with two 120lb German Shepherds patrolling my, I mean their, house, I don't know if anyone would get close enough to read the sign:D

I have things in my house worth dying for. It just depends on how you value things.... wife, kids, money, jewelry, electronics, firearms, etc.

After you die, none of the things in a house are of any value to you.

Which is why nothing in a house is worth dying for.

Forget about the signs. I have four dogs living in the house, they all bark when things move around outdoors. Advertisements(signs) invite trouble.

What about a quote from Dante's Inferno--I do not remember the Italian--but it was Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. Paint it on your threshold.

Forgive me for asking a personal question, but do you have children or are you only talking about material things?

Whether one has children or not is irrelevant, because those without children are certainly capable of knowing what is not worth dying for.

Setting aside the issue of value of things inside someone else's house post-mortem, I think a dog would be a lot more effective than a silly sign. If criminals won't obey signs banning firearms in a mall or school, why would they be deterred by a chest-thumping sign outside of a home (other than when they establish the house as a target for burglary)?

Well, I just wanted clarification on exactly what sorts of things are not important if you get killed, from your point of view, since a number of other posters have mentioned children explicitly, that's all. Sure, material things are never worth dying for, but I think many would make an exception for members of their own families in the context of home invasions and armed robberies.

I want a sign that says, "if you come in vertical without my permission, you will leave horizontal with my permission.:D

The whole premise of this thread is absurd. :D

Absurd, but entertaining nonetheless!

It is kind of ironic that I first saw that sign offered through a Frontsight email. Frontsight, for those that don't know about it, is the firearm training school in Nevada. The are quite aggressive in their advertising but I have learned a lot from some of their emailed videos. Bottom line, I also believe in the stealth approach, which is why I never bought one of them.

Fremmer, to each his own. I wouldn't recommend you visiting my house and trying to take my posessions. I generally think that the person who is not supposed to be somewhere is going to do the dying; but there is always a chance it could be the other way around when push comes to shove. I accept the risk.

Yeah, thump that ol' chest a little harder. Because I'm not coming to anybody's house. But we're all now better educated about how everybody is ready to rock and rambo in thier houses.

The best warning sign is:

BEWARE OF DOG.

Any criminal who sees that will simply move on to an easier target. Criminals are lazy by nature and want something for little effort. Dealing with a loud barking/biting dog sounds too much like work and the typical burglar will avoid dogs. Don't have a dog? It doesn't matter. Post the sign where it can be seen from the street and no criminal will bother to find out. He will just move on to something that looks easier. I learned this trick from a police captain who used to work burglaries. He said that that $2 sign is the best money you could ever spend on home defense.

When I was eleven, I thought the placards with slogans like; "Forget dog, beware of owner" or "Anyone found here at night will be found here in the morning" or Persecutors will be violated" or "survivors will be prosecuted" or "My shotgun is loaded three nights a week, you guess which three" were just freakin' hilarious.

I doubt the jury will agree.
