I am looking for a 9mm. This will be my first handgun. The problem I am having having handled a few at the gun store is my hands are too big. What are some guns that those with bigger hands have success with?

Beretta 92 or Taurus PT92 have larger grips than newer semi-autos.

You could also try M&P fullsize with large grip insert.

Beretta 92. Great gun. Such a classic, everyone should have it on the short list.

The only complaint some have with a "92" is that it's a tad "big".

Get a few Mec-Gar 18 round mags to go with it...

Beretta 92 or Stoeger Cougar 9mm. Both have grips that fit large hands are are very good, reliable, accurate pistols.

I agree with the SIG 229.

Also consider the CZ97B. It's in .45 but its grip is meant for big hands.

This is an excellent question by the OP. To many folks adapt to the gun vs finding the gun that fits them, or can be setup for them.

One of the most potent reasons, IMNSHO, that the 1911 has been so popular for a century is that it can be reasonably adapted to many hand sizes and variants. Long, medium, short trigger. Thin, narrow, regular, and extra thick grips. Straight, "V", or arched Mainspring housing, etc.......

It is so effective that 80 to 90 years later most of the newly designed guns offer the ability to adapt to the shooter as a feature. Really radical.

Most guns with replaceable grips can be found or made to be for larger hands to.

As many others have already stated about the Beretta 92/Taurus family of similar design have stood the test of time. (In the Beretta line avoid the Vertec variant, although no longer made, it is the "small" grip model 92, I have three, and a Steel 1 which is a straight back like the Vertec, no rail, all stainless steel, and Single action only (SAO).

I only have one CZ, the 75B SAO too. I think it could be easily enlarged too.

Also in 9mm one should consider the 1911 again. The 9mm in an all steel frame is a sweet heart to shoot. I have three Colts set up for competition and one of them my daughter shoots. The other 20 1911's I have are all in 45acp.

If you should include the 45acp in your search, seveal other guns do come to mind, but I will not stray, this time.

Good luck.

I can attest to both of these. The M&P w/ the large backstrap is big in all the right places.

I also have a buddy with long fingers that loves his Ruger SR9.

I have the Sig P229 Elite stainless. I bought this gun because I felt the Sig P226 was too beefy in my hands. So I would recommend the P226 over the P229 if you have big hands.

I have slightly larger than average hands. Strangely, as time goes on I'm starting to prefer slightly smaller grips than what would typically be recommended for my size. I'm starting to prefer single-stack guns for the thinner grip. So yeah, don't let anyone talk you into what you "should" be using.

Labhound is right on; Beretta 92fs or if bucks are tight, Stoeger/Beretta Cougar series. Both are outstanding.

I would stay away from a 1911 as a 1ST handgun, they're just too finicky.

You want your 1st to be "out of the box" very reliable, easy to shoot accurately, will shoot any type/brand ammo you feed it & requires a minimal amount of maintenance. Both the 92FS & the Cougar fit that criteria to a "T".

CZ75B, Beretta 92 FS or the Sig P226.

I think that its more about the length of you fingers than the size of your hand. The best thing to do is go hold and lot of guns and then shoot the ones that feel good. Also make sure you are gripping the gun properly when you try them out.

Check out this video for a quick grip tutorial...One of them will pick you as much as you pick it.

If the S&W M&P9 with the large grip insert is still too small then you could consider one of the large double stack 1911's - either Para Ordnance or STI.

Fifteen shot Serbian Zastava version of Sig-Sauer called EZ9 at $300 in very hard to beat.

The HK USP has a full size grip, with a very large trigger guard which gives your trigger finger plenty of room to swing in there.
I put a Hogue slip on grip on mine to increase grip circumference.

have you tried the Ruger P95? can be found used at a good price. i have found them to be reliable. i have shot over 1000 rds of "hot loads" and havent had a problem.

Sig 226, CZ75B both require a big hand(long fingers) in DA mode, in SA they're not to awefully bad in reach. A G17 would also fill your hand well;) At this point I'm just repeating what everyone else have already stated, and will go:D
