Best 9mm?

Of the guns I own:

Browning Hi Power
CZ-75B
CZ-75D PCR
HK P7M8

Compared to the guns above, I find the Sigs overated, and I have the fabled German made P228.

In my opinion, the best 9mm pistol is the GLOCK 17. If you want something smaller, the GLOCK 19 is a great choice. I also like the Beretta 92FS, the SIG Sauer 226 and the Smith & Wesson 910.

A sig overated? Hmmm. My 226 is reliable, accurate and goes bang every single time. For me that deserves a high rating.:)

I own and recommend:
Sig 226
CZ75BD (kadet kits for .22 are great)
CZP-01
BHP
Glock 34
Glock 17

The CZ is the best value. For a first gun having the .22 conversion kit will get you hours of trigger time for little $. My CZ75BD with the Kadet kit was about the same cost as the Sig and the BHP, slightly more than the Glocks. The kadet slide assembly goes on the frame just like the 9mm and looks like this

Ok well some people asked if price is an option, it is not.
If you have smaller hands and money is no object, do yourself a favor and try to get your hands on an H&K P7M8. The thing is a work of art. Now that they're out of production, the prices are rising. But you can still get a new one for around $1400 or so. Don't miss the boat!

im all about a beretta, sig, taurus, cz, and browning hp. i have a very hard time gettin excited about anything with a plastic frame. ive never shot one but id be interested in trying a baby eagle some time. anybody got experiance? and i think the gun in richards post is a sig...dont know the model.

My top picks:

BHP
CZ PCR or P-01
Sig
Glock 26 (I pick this one only due to being small, light & reliable...no real affinity to them otherwise)
1911 in 9mm

My list is quite close to BOLDKHARMA's!! I like Beretta 92's as well but too chunky for me.

9 mm Glock (G19 or G17) - to me it did feel nice and comfortable.
9 mm CZ (CZ 75B)
Ok, these are what I like, but for you - whatever feels and fits best. Though, try to stick to proven, true and reliable guns.
And to Doc2005 my nickname "Princess Crash" evolved last year when I totaled 2 cars within 2 weeks. Both accidents involving 18 wheelers....It used to just be princess but after those 2 incidents Crash was added!
Talk about total mayhem. Wow girl!

Does anyone have an opinion on what might be the best 9mm?

If you're not throughly confused with the answers to this question after four or five pages, I'll be surprised. Now, you're going to get a lot of BHP answers only because God, himself, designed it, doncha know? You're going to get a lot of "Glock" because all the tacticool guys love 'em.

I think you should stick with a DA for a first 9mm, not DAO, not "Safe Action", not SA, but DA with which you can fire SA if you cock the hammer. Now, I love Rugers. I am a practical guy and Rugers are rugged and Rugers work and Rugers are reasonably priced. However, and I've never even fired one, but I like the idea of it and see a lot of good reviews of it by people that have one, consider a CZ pistol. The CZ '75 can be carried SA cocked and locked or DA, your choice. You can practice with either while you learn, and 9mm ammo cost will allow you to practice a lot, which the CZ can take in stride. I'd like to have one myself, but I already have two 9mms and I'm in a revolver mood lately.:D CZs are not badly priced either, though.

The best 9mm?

To me, its the Browning Hi-Power. Slim, simple, well made, all steel, accurate and the best trigger.

Honorable mention goes to (and these are VERY good 9mms)...

Sig's 226 and 228 (the W. German made models)
Sig's P210 (if you can swing the 3 grand price tag)
HK p7 (again...very pricey)
CZ-75
Beretta 92FS
Springfield XD-9

There are other quality 9mms but these are definately the best. I'd start by looking at these and seeing which one you can afford and which one fits your hand best.

Glock 19

I feel the the GLOCK 19 is the best compromise between size/carryability, and firepower. It is completely reliable and simple to use. It is safe if used properly (keep your finger out of the trigger guard unless you are ready to shoot). Since it will be your first, there should be no issues with the feel of the trigger. Field strips for cleaning in about 2 seconds. Just my $.02.

best 9

An indvidual decision if there ever was one. Last year when I started looking at 9's held and shot everything that the local range had in that caliber. As an old 1911 guy most all of the da/sa, dao, safety trigger styles seemed odd. Also found that I wasn't real fond of any polymer framed pistol, just did not feel right to me, the grips just wern't right in my hand. That was the time I found the CZ line, steel frame, can be carried DA or SA, fits the hand like a glove. Was not the best trigger I've seen out of the box but a few thousand rounds later it has smoothed out very well. This was made much more affordable with the addition of the Kadet 22 conversion, another plus. It shoots anything, is wonderfully accurate, and the only thing I own that is more reliable is my Ruger Vaquaro. While I would not be so bold as to say that for everyone the CZ is the best 9mm in the world, it should be near the top of anyone's list of 9's to take a close look at. It is the one that I trust my life to daily.

A sig overated? Hmmm. My 226 is reliable, accurate and goes bang every single time. For me that deserves a high rating.

My P228 is also, but not quite as accurate or ergonomic as the others I listed. But that's for me, YMMV and does! :)

My pick: CZ SP-01 w/ Kadet .22 kit. Great for range and home defense use.

For a 9mm for range/home defense/CCW use: CZ75 compact w/ Kadet kit

I only say that as the Sp-o1 is a little big for CCW. And it may be too heavy for some for range use, at 42 oz unloaded.

There have been many suggestions and ideas. Everyone has listed what they think is best according to their likes, needs, feel/fit, etc.

But YOU have to cedide which one is BEST for YOU!

What you are going to use it for will help determine a lot. For instance if it is for concealed carry a full sized gun might be too big. If it is strictly for the range a DAO gun might not be what you want.

Get a pistol that is made out of good quality materials and one that is reliable. Make sure it fits you and fills your needs.

It could be a Kel-Tec, a 1911 style pistol, or anything in between. It all depends on YOUR needs and preferences. What's best for me probably won't be what's best for you or the next person.

This is reallly a question with no correct answer

But you probably knew that. I own or have owned almost all the pistols named above. The fact is that Beretta, Browning, Glock, H&K, Kahr, Springfield Armory, SIG and several other companies make truly fine 9x19 pistols. You need to ask yourself questions like: (1) what manual of arms do I feel comfortable with? (2) what manual of arms do I want to train to excel with? (3) how does the grip work for me (size, angle, etc.)? (4) how do the controls work for me in terms of placement/access? (5) what magazine capacity do I need or can I live with? (6) does size matter, and if it does, how will I carry (example, barrel length doesn't really matter for IWB but matters a lot for OWB)? Make a grid and start plotting the variables? It's almost hard to make a bad choice here, mechanically speaking. The question is: how will the pistol suite you? Enjoy, this could actually be a fun project. :D

Cost is no object?

Well If thats the case, and this gonna be a carry gun, why not a Rohrbaugh R9 or R9S? I have seen but not handled, nor shot one for fear I would "have to have it" and do something stupid like trade in my AR-15 to get it. They're tiny, expensive, and certainly nice to look at. Their owners are a fiercly loyal group and by all acoount its because the Rohrbaugh is a great pistol - if you have a grand or so to drop on one. Outside of that you said you shot a Glock well princesscrash. No, they're not the prettiest things to look at, but their accuracy and reliability are certainly pretty. Also Glocks are downright pretty compared to, oh, say a Hi-Point :D. Once again, and I cannot stress this enough, handle them all at the gun store and get the one that fits YOU best.

For the best balance of size, weight, capacity (IMO)
Glock 19.

My "old" carry pistol was a S&W 469 with a satin nickle finish. 12 + 1 round capacity. I had Pachmyer grips and that gun was accurate and very comfortable to shoot. I've sinced had the gun engraved and will give it to my daughter when she is old enough. It's a little heavier than the Glock 19, but the slide is thinner. A very comfortable carry. The stainless model 669 can still be found.

That said, I also have a Glock 17. Nice to have common magazines between the holster carry and the conceal carry. Both also have 33 rnd mag options :)

Lots of good options mentioned. It's kinda hard to say what is "the best" as there are so many variations and intended uses.

For concealed carry, I don't think my Kahr PM9 can be beat.

For range shooting, the Beretta 92FS is probably my favorite.

You should try to handle and shoot as many as you can before making a decision. What is "best" for one person is not for another. The way the gun feels in your hand will tell you a lot--if the grip is too small, to large, or at the wrong angle, it doesn't matter who tells you it's the "best", because it won't be for you.

i'd venture to say that any weapon used by the World's military forces would qualify by anyones terms to be the top weapons of choice in case you had to use a weapon..given that you or an individual is never/almost never going to use/abuse a handgun like the purpose it was intended to, combat..you would be well served by any of the different makes and models currently in use by said forces. choose what you can afford, select that one which works ergonomically for you and finally pick one that appeals to you (subjective)..no sense getting a Glock, if you can't stand to look at one..no matter what anyone says about what a fine combat weapon it is. it's your money, enjoy the selection process...let me know what you settled on..we want to know which one you think is the best! :D myself, price no object, then that would be an H&K USP..if price is a factor, then a Glock G19 would give me peace of mind. YMMV..

Best 9mm

That's a very broad question, too broad for a meaningful question without some clarification. It's like asking what's the best .45. I've got a ball gun, a wad gun, a CCW gun and an S&W 25-2. The wadgun and the 25-2 are NEVER going to be able to change places with the CCW gun or with each other for that matter.

Similarly, while a BHP and a compact Kahr are both good guns, I wouldn't want to carry the Kahr as military belt gun, nor would the BHP do as well as a CCW gun as the Kahr, although it does well enough.

What do you plan to do with the gun? Home defense? CCW? IDPA? Plinking?

I've got a BHP, and while a little large, it is a decent CCW gun. It's also an excellent belt or home defense gun. With the Argentine "Detective" slide and barrel, it'd probably be an excellent CCW gun as well. Cocked and locked doesn't bother me, so I think the BHP is an excellent compromise of size, ammunition capacity, reliability and accuracy. Plus I don't like double action autos (I don't count the Glock). If you've got relatively small hands/trigger finger reach, you ought to at least give the BHP a try, especially the Argentine guns which are very reasonably priced.
