some of their friends yesterday due to all of the shooting we were doing in my backyard.

This is the second time in 7 years someone called the police on us. The last time was about 6 months ago, and the local Sheriff's department sent one deputy to check us out.

This time, TWO squad cars came out. Fortunately, though, it was because they wanted to shoot with us. One of the officers remembered the earlier visit, so he brought a friend this time, hoping to get a little private range time in. :)

The deputies had a blast (no pun intended) and a good time was had by all.

That is a pretty cool story. I'm afraid I wouldn't be very high road if I knew which neighbors called in. I'd prolly call them and say, "Hey would you call the cops again tomorrow. Those guys sure were fun to shoot with."

Gotta love the neighbors cowering in fear while watching the cops they called joining in the fun!

Actually, to complete the story, the neighbor that dropped the dime on me followed the officers onto my property. I went out to speak with him - NOT to get into an argument or fight with him (I actually wanted to apologize if we interrupted his Sunday afternoon nap and try to find a way to avoid annoying him in the future, if possible).

Once he saw it was me, he apologized profusely. He told me he thought it was a bunch of people hunting in the swamp behind his house. He said that, if he knew it was me shooting in my backyard, he would have asked to come shoot with us as well. Not sure how honest he was being, but I'll take it.

The officers said the first time they were called it was someone relatively far away from my house. But that day my kids were shooting some Mosin Nagants and some deer rifles, so the officers thought it might've been the greater noise from high-powered rifles that caused a neighbor to complain.

i love happy endings!

i can just see the guy who called the cops watching you guys!

"yeah here comes the cops, that'll show em. that will teach you, dog pooping all over my lawn, ill show you! wait what why are they.....why arent they.....(look of hope draing from face)

Great story. Everybody stayed happy and the outcome was good. I'd go so far as to invite the neighbor over and have some hot dogs and shooting. Make sure YOU call the cops next time and invite them too.
Mike

When I lived on a rural 2-acre lot that dropped 30-ft into a creek bottom, we would shoot couple of times each month into the embankment... and 1 of 4 adjoining neighbors complained. Actually, he shouted profanity and threats in front of my children. To curb THAT behavior, I had the sheriff visit my neighbor and we were able to reach a peacable understanding.

Now I live in a subdivision with houses on 1/3 acre. It's outside the city limit by 3 blocks and thus legal to shoot, but... let's just say it helps to be high road in the neighborhood, too. :)

Officers, neighbors, hot dogs, guns....and everyone happy? Sounds like a great story.

I'm assuming you have a large yard/property. If I shot in mine there would be a swat team.

Where I live, it wouldn't be possible to (safely) do any shooting in the backyard. You must live out in the country somewhere, and have a big backyard.

A few years ago, out near Manassas, Virginia (in my general area), a couple of guys set up a target behind their house and fired hundreds of rounds at it. Unfortunately, their backstop consisted of hay bales and they ended up perforating a house half a mile away. Luckily, nobody was hurt, but the occupants of the perforated house spent a terrorized afternoon, huddled in the basement, thinking that someone was trying to kill them. It took the sheriff a long time to ascertain the source of the shots.

Safety is definitely paramount. I have four acres and live at the very end of a dirt road. All of my neighbors have at least four acres as well. My neighbor on one side has 14 acres.

My backyard is surrounded by a good sized creek and backs up to a thick swamp that elevates up from my backyard. The swamp serves as a very large buffer between my property and the property on the other side of the swamp. Where we shoot, we are actually shooting down into the swamp that starts to elevate right behind where we put our targets.

So it is extremely safe as far as backyard gun ranges go.

It's also very private, as we have large pines and other trees surrounding the property and the creek surrounds about 60% of my property. No one can see in, and we can't see out. And no cars travel in front of our house because the dirt road ends at my property.

We've got a couple of spring fed bass ponds as well, so it's really a nice little private Idaho (except that it's in Florida, not Idaho :-D).

A few years back my dad and brother got their names in the local newspaper. They were sighting in their slug guns and somebody called the sheriff. The report read something like "Hunters sighting in guns. Shooting into a dirt backstop. No violations found."
The range is 700' off the road on 10 acres of land.

We live on 10 acres on a mountain and everyone shoots up here. However there is one guy that shoots a bit too much. He is 78 years old and shoots mostly high powered rifle...4 to 5 hours a day,,,everyday. He has no other life. You know, reload, reload, test shoot, test shoot, reload....ad infinitum.

At least he doesn't start shooting at 07:00 anymore, more like 10:00. Not out of consideration for anyone else though. He could care less if he is bothering someone. He says he is getting arthritis in his shoulder...wonder why?

When we shoot we try to consider the neighbors, even if there are only 3 or 4 of them that can hear us.

I live in the country If I start shooting on a sat or sunday Pretty soon you will hear others up down road . No matter who starts always several more join in . We are a well armed back country road. Lots of shooting and hunting in season of course.

Funny!

Don't forget the sodas and coffee....AND invite the neighbor over...but don't start him out shooting the M-44 Mosin-nagant with some "Heavy Ball" ammo

Good story.:)

I've been shooting on my eight acres since 1967. As far as I know no one has complained. Although one new young lady neighbor said, "I thought machine guns were against the law."
I told her, "You need to get your gun information from someone other than the talking heads on ABC, CNN, NBC, etc."

A couple moved in across the road and built a nice house and horse ranch.
The first time I talked to the lady she said, "Are you the one that does all the shooting? (you don't know where a question like that is headed)

I said, "That's me".
She said, "Would you teach me to shoot?"
I said, "I'd be glad to".:D

You are a lucky one....when my father and I were dove hunting on my grandfather's 78 acre farm we had a "neighbor" call the police saying that we were shooting his house..... We were shooting #7 1/2 shot into the wind.....and this neighbor's house was 1,100 yards away (I had a rangefinder)....

When the officer went to check with the man who called 911, he asked the officer to, get this, remove her sidearm because it scared him.....

Ditto.

I seriously believe that all of the local sheriff's deputies that I've met would also join in the fun if called to my place.

You couldn't pay me to move back into Houston or the surrounding 'burbs.

Same around here. Best I can tell there are about six people that shoot on their land.

A few months ago I heard a 50 cal. There was no mistaking that gun.:)
