It has started. The anti's are coming out of the woodwork on this. I already have people I know on Facebook saying we need stricter gun laws, nobody should be allowed to own an assault rifle or military type weapon etc. I have done my part on educating them on the fact that an AR is not an assault rifle, explained why it isn't, explained that it is a modern day sporting rifle, etc.

I also went on to explain that statistically speaking countries and cities that have an armed populace generally have a much lower crime rate. I told them to just look at cities like NY, DC, and Chicago, all of whom have very strict gun laws yet have some of the highest crime rates in America. And you know, went on my soapbox from there so I will not reiterate all of it, but I am wondering what else I can educate them on at least so they can form a better understanding before they decide or say statements like, " we should ban all guns, etc."

Explain that originally the right to keep and bear arms was to assure the citizens against "governmet forgetfullness regarding liberty.
I am more concerned about government then everyday criminals.
Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Even my wife asked how anyone could purchase so much ammo without sounding some kind of alarm. But she watches idiots like Pearce Morgan and CNN and they have been blaming the guns instead of the individual that carried out this horrific act. I heard one commentator on the radio today claim that the only hope we have for gun control is to reelect President Obama since Romney has the backing of the NRA. Based on what they are telling us was in his apartment, if the mags, guns and bullets had been banned, he would have probably used a bomb.

I have been fortunate to be surrounded almost entirely by "friendlies"

But, I do have a very close friend that feels as though "guns should have never been invented in the first place" We have very civil discussions knowing one isnt going to change the others mind, although I think Im starting to poke holes in his beliefs.

You can throw facts at people all day and nothing makes sense to them because they want to be right, its something we all do. I bet you could prove that texting causes more deaths and injuries than firearms and people would still make excuses why guns need to be banned or regulated even more.

One of the best arguments that really gets a pro gun point across is the one where a 5'1" female is supposed to hold her own against a 6'4" male with other than honorable intentions with nothing more than her wits.

Unfortunately, you cannot "educate" someone who has already made up their mind. You can only stand your ground on logic and evidence and leave it at that.

:banghead:

Perhaps you could have some fun, occasionally. For instance, have these people imagine that idiot walking into a packed theater and opening fire, only to discover that every adult there was a law abiding citizen carrying a concealed weapon?

I seriously doubt his body armor would have done him any good, except to save a part of his chest for a doctor to put a stethoscope on in order to pronounce him DOA.

:D:D

Chief - G. Gordon Liddy used to have a radio talk show many years ago.
One of his favorite taglines was:

"Body armor doesn't cover everything!":evil::D

Stupid comment from Liddy. I don't want to derail the thread.

OP, stick in there. We do need to continue to educate.

Education statement

With very few exceptions if any at all, mass shootings occur in places that have banned legal guns and concealed carry.

Mass shooting defined as more than 3 people killed and excluding domestic violence.

Does anyone know if CC was even legal in that theatre? Was the mall one of those "no concealed weapons allowed" places? Not very familiar with CO laws in this regard.

Unfortunately many people are really sheeple and will react or suddenly come to believe in one social theory or another just because they think it is the cool thing to do.

So all of them can tell you which movie star loves penguins and which TV star has herpes. But they cannot tell you anything about the justice system, the history of the country or what is happening in the halls of congress.

They are led willingly down the road of being anti-gun quite easily because it is still socially permissible to hate , fear or loth an inanimate object.

The standard liberal drivel proclaims that you cannot blame a criminal for a criminal act. Nor can a terrorist be called such... and so on....

Thus instead of rebelling against their socialist / liberal mind masters,,,which they could simply do via common sense.... they play along with the game though frustrated and point the blame at a lump of steel or plastic.... usually while creating a fantasy life of some sort for the unsuspecting object of their politically correct wrath.

It takes lot of patience to debate and discuss this (or any other) subject with those who have already consumed the liberal anti-firearm kool-aid.

Start off by explaining that most of the initial reports regarding whatever emergency the TV talking heads are using at the moment , ,, is probably greatly exaggerated and in some cases not true. They are often wild rumors meant to excite and control the weak minded. Maybe they will start thinking about things.

Next, start them down the path of logical debate. Try to break them away from their initial emotional and often hysterical response.

The nearest LGS is 40 miles away so I buy ammo, components and guns on the Net and this is now being portrayed by the media as evil.

Beware - neather Obama or Romney have ever owned a single gun.

Most people in my neck of the woods showed sadness that people lost their loved ones, but as something that affected their lives - it was almost a non-event. There are massacres and slayings daily everywhere in the world. Almost the same number of people were murdered in Chicago in one particular weekend versus what happened in Aurora CO. But no flags were lowered half-staff. (http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7415602n)

Nevertheless, the local rag in one story starts with "How safe do you feel now?"

The unnecessary hand-wringing is just over-the-top. The good thing for me is many people I know are openly questioning what angle the media is trying to drive at. And these people are NOT pro-2nd amendment.

IMO, I think the 'antis' are overplaying their hand badly.

Oh boy and here is what one of the anti's friends posted. I am not sure where he gets his information and I have asked him to produce it.

Below is his statement:

Also, gun crimes in the UK where guns have been banned for a while: In 2011 the UK/Wales had just under 6000 recorded gun crimes (crimes involving guns being fired), in the US, that number is close to 100,000 per year.

Our death rate from guns is 13x that of a country that has outlawed them. It's 44x that of Germany.

Nobody is saying that outlawing guns is the answer, but if you're going to make claims about countries with heavy restrictions on guns, back them up with facts not conjecture.

Also, states with stricter gun laws have fewer acts of gun violence and illegal gun exporting, where the exact opposite is true for states with loose gun laws.

Get your facts straight.

Yep. Those discussions are starting a new.

Emotional, non-thinking people make emotional arguments not based in fact or reality. Do not let them rule our lives.

This will pass, and politicians know that more gun control laws is political suicide.

Knee jerk reactions and Politicians turning the event into a talking point ( Bloomburg You idiot, You didn't even wait until the bodies were removed from the theater ) aren't whats needed today, but answers to ?'s of a mind gone wrong. 300+ million Americans , this is the cost of personal freedoms We all rail about ! With the amount of firearms in America today doesn't it seem a little foolish calling for more gun laws when that cat is already out of the bag ? Sorry to those who lost love ones do to this madman. ....wvleo

The most annoying anti argument is "why would anyone need an AR-15 or an AK-47?".

I respond that shooting and firearms is a hobby, just like you love having an expensive BMW that you spend 5,000 putting a supercharger on, people like their rifles, just like I do. What do you need a supercharger on for? Do you really need to go over 120mph in a public road? Same argument.

I've always just smiled, and said "guns dont kill people, people with malicious intent and a conscience black enough to allow them to exercise that, with a gun, kill people."

Here's a fact for him. Chicago has extremely strict gun laws. Look how well that's been working lately.

The most effective answer to most antis is something like:

Today you ask the government to take away some right that you don't want people to have. It does so, and you cheer.

Tomorrow I ask the government to take away some right that you enjoy. It does so, and you grieve.

Same government, exercising the power you want it to have. Oops!

I've noticed that events like this happen and people go into "I'm frightened" mode and are often susceptible to the first "advice" that they hear (usually on the anti-rights newscasts).

This is like any other political thing, you're on one side or the other and nothing said by one side will likely do much of anything to change the opinion of the other side.
