I never knew I had so many anti friends until today...

It is important to let people know that gun owners are just as angry and saddened by this tragedy as the non-gun owners, and that we are respectful of the victims. Combating misinformation needs to be done in very thoughtful and respectful ways. I believe gun owners have a real chance to make a positive difference here, but can do a lot of damage if they aren't careful.

100% agree, and very well stated.

The problem I have with folks who cite England is that they compare gun crime in the US versus gun crime in UK, but don't look at how UK gun crime (and non-gun crime that might be deterred by defensive gun use) change after each gun control act or amendment goes into effect.

British gun control has been followed by increases in gun crime and increases in violent non-gun crime.

Colin Greenwood, Superintendent, West Yorkshire Metropolitan Police,
writing in 1972 about the effects of half a century of UK gun control
from the 1920 Firearms Act to the 1968 Firearms Act.
"No matter how one approaches the figures, one is forced to the
conclusion that the use of firearms in crime was very much less when
there were no controls of any sort and when anyone, convicted criminal
or lunatic, could buy any type of firearm without restriction. Half
a century of strict controls on pistols has ended, perversely, with a
far greater use of this class of weapon in crime than ever before."
---
Colin Greenwood, "Firearms Control", (Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1972)

Incarcerated British gun criminals told a recent Home Office study (2006) that if they wanted a gun after release from prison, it would take them about a week to find an illegal gun in the UK, that criminals who wanted them had little problem finding them. There is a class of British criminal called armourers whose job is to furnish guns to criminals: smuggling particularly from eastern Europe, fencing stolen guns (shotguns get sawn-off), converting blank guns, replicas, air guns or deactivated guns to fire live ammo, repairing and maintenance of guns, renting guns, etc.

I have also noticed this. I just spent a lengthy post online explaining the differences. People just try and lump me in with a perceived stereotype that people who shoot these rifles are stupid. I have noticed that most of them shut up if you stay at them. Bombard them with facts. Eventually they will get frustrated and shut up. The AR 15 is the most popular sporting rifle in the country. For every post I have seen of people slaming the rifle and trying to pass off misinformation, I have seen 3 combating it. If enough of us keep "educating" them, or even (God I hate to say it), trolling their sites, they will get the picture. There are more of us then there are of them.

Don't forget about this shooting in Belgium, in which the criminal used a long gun.

And as an example, Belgium forbids assault rifles, but this guy got a hold of (ironically) an FN FAL, how?

Sad times. My father, a lifetime outdoorsman and shooter, who bought me my first shotgun for hunting grouse when I was 13, told me the other day when I brought some IDPA silhouette targets over to his property to practice, first time I'd used them on his property..."son, why do you want to shoot at something that looks like a person? its one thing when you are shooting at paper circle targets...I don't want you shooting at anything that looks like a person, I think that you should think hard about why you like to own so many guns, and what you intend to do with them. Why do you have all that reloading stuff? Are you planning something? Your mother and I are starting to worry about you. What if the neighbors call the police and report gunshots, and the police come? Are you having problems at work? Do you need to talk to us about anything?" This is coming from the guy who once had to hold an armed trespasser at gunpoint until the police arrived when I was a child, and ALWAYS had a 30-06 behind the seat in the truck, raised us kids on venison. Suddenly something totally normal until a few months ago has become, literally, taboo; the enjoyment and ownership of firearms. It was one of the most akward, uncomfortable things I've heard him say, and I could hear in his heart he knew he was wrong even as he was saying it, but he watches CNN and MSNBC lot these days. Its a sad insight into how public perception about shooting and the ability/right to defend ones self is changing for the negative.

where is the outrage?
where is the coverage?

Oh boy, we will see how this goes tonight as I plan on writing my rather lengthy rebuttal to this one anti 2A friend. In fact, I think we should implement a resource here that points out strongpoints to having our 2A rights. You know like a place where we can go to get valid information to form our arguments without having to search it out every time. I think I might post my rebuttal to him if it comes out half as good as I think it will.

This is kinda related..

Good luck with you mission SilentStalker. I don't have any articles but maybe some encouragement.

I was contemplating the state of things as I worked out this morning, especially the number of pro gun control "friends" I seem to have, especially on Facebook, when it occured to me that they generally are so self absorbed that in a week they will all but have forgotten the events of last week. Many of them know nothing about firearms, have never handled a firearm, and are pretty much out of the loop when it comes to things gun (control) related. They just re-post stuff other people have sent them to appear "compassionate" to all thier other fb friends. That being said, I have replied in a non-confrontational way to thier attacks on the Second Ammendment but largely have let things go. After all, there are so many other causes out there for them to "care about". I figure if I keep up the argument it will only encourage them.

It's important to point out that since the first settlement in James Town, Americans have been responsible for their own safety. Only recently has the very land in which nearly every able man was armed and prepared to turn out in defense turned anti gun, by this I mean much of New England.
We should rightfully show pictures of Boston, Trenton, New York City and even DC as the original Switzerland or Israel and what can happen when the people stray from their roots and principles and become fully dependent on the gov for protection.
