No Ammo Delivery for Academy

Why should they receive shipments when civilians are having such a hard time finding ammo? Who comes first here?

The deliveries at our local Academy stores have been random and very limited lately. They are not getting the usual shipments M/W/F but randomly during the day. It is mostly shotgun, hunting rifle, or oddball handgun ammo.

Tackleberry's line must be a long one. He passed away 12 years ago.

Not meaning any disrespect to Mr. Graf or his family.

I walked into a shop here in Austin yesterday and they had about 50 or 60 500 round cases of 5.56mm ammo. $250 per 500. 1 case limit. I didn't get one. Very little 9mm and or 357mag. No 40 S&W. This was more ammo then I have seen in months and I have been looking.

Must be because the opened a new Academy here and it was full of ammo. However they did have the popular stuff (.223, .308, 9mm, 45) at a separate location with associates limiting it to one box per caliber, 3 box total limit. Did get some tula .223 for $6, my Mini 14 loves the steel stuff.

I think new store openings do get priorities, I went to gander mtn out side of Charlotte no ammo. Then I was going through Winston Salem, saw a new gander mtn and stopped. It was fully stocked with everything but 22. racks full of ammo and guns, even had black guns. Same ol high prices, but there.

Idrove by Academy the other day on my way to breakfast with a bunch of us old retired cooters. Store was about half hour from opening. Big line of people lined up to make a rush for the firerms section. Reminded me of a bunch of vultures waiting for something to die. Reading a local gun forum, Academy only has ammo on a few mornings. Some of those people probably are there every day. I'll be glad when this hoarding crap ceases.

Unfortunately, the folks that are buying everything as the truck is unloading are also the ones selling on armslist at triple prices. The gouging will stop and shipments will actually hit the shelves when folks stop buying from gougers/resellers.

Of course, none of these people will acknowledge that fact.

How unAmerican! You're supposed to buy all you can and then sell it to people who have none at outrageous prices.

Well hopefully Congress and the sequestration will force the DHS to stop hording ammo.

See the ammo companies have a finite supply of brass, bullets, powder, and primers and can only set up their lines to make so much. Right now .40 S&W, 9mm, 7.62, and 5.56 dominate for the military and DHS. Since the military does not use .40 S&W that comes from civilian stocks more than the other three.

So the ammo companies, cranking out as much .40 as possible, have to limit what they make in any other cartridge. Then it is sent to distributors and THEY sell where they may.

Personally I see this as a Obama administration test to see if they can control the supply of ammo. Do that and gun control becomes a fait accompli. Control the ammo, control the guns.

See not only is the DHS buying, but every LEO organization, CIA, NSA, etc.... and that's one heck of alot of ammo. Hence you now see Tulia ammo from Russia showing up on shelves (as well as their primers.) DHS and the cops don't use Tulia, right? And so it shows up!

I feel pressure on Ammo makers and distributors to forgo DHS contracts is one way (just as some gun companies leaving anti-gun states.)

The DHS having a shortage of ammo would be poetic justice.

Ha! You got me there. I will say I was tempted the last time I bought a case of 9mm to sell half online to pay for the other half. I decided I'd rather keep it and shoot it myself.

The answer is to reload, not camp, although it is probably too late for even that given the availability of primers.

With several states having passed laws that require an ID check, or worse like my current state, CT, a separate permit to buy ammo if you don't have an existing pistol permit, I'd be buying all I could get my hands on before your state passes such a law.

You can preen all you want about how your state will never blah, blah, blah, but who really knows until it happens?

Ammo doesn't spoil. When it hits the shelves again, I suggest you stock up.

I went into my local Academy this afternoon. I was able to pick up one box of .308 due to their supply problems. "One box of a caliber per day," is what our local store is doing -- don't know if others are doing the same or their own ration system.

Bad time to start reloading, given the scarcity of components. I expect that most primer production has been swung into feeding ammunition production versus sale as reloading components.
