My daughter shoots a Mossberg 270. Plenty of power for elk; Plenty of range for antelope. Synthetic stock. You could get one for $300 and have coin for reloading and a scope.
Lots of rock people use vibrators instead of rotary tumblers for rock polishers. They are much, much faster than rotary tumblers, and do not round the rocks as much. You do not need to add water and the residual silica carbide does nothing to the brass later. My only warnings are don't...
My -06 bolt gun like heavy bullets and shines with 200gr Sierras. The way you find out what your gun likes the best is try different weight bullets and try different powder loads until you have something that is consistently accurate.
With a new high quality rifle, the barrels these days...
+1 with ms68. Do a ladder test to determine exactly what is the best powder charge for your barrel. I'd also recommend trying a heavier bullet with a better balistic coef.

Find a local club that does it and borrow a military rifle to shoot the event with. ANY score works for the purposes of CMP. ANY. Get your Garand and ammo and keep doing it.
200 yd zero should be 2" high at 50 yds. At 100 yards you'll be about 2.5" high which is close to perfect for resting black area of a NRA High Power target on your front post.
At 275yds, which is the classic battle zero, you'll be 5.5" low and at 300yds you'll be 8" low.
I think there is...
Something in 7.62x39, maybe an SKS with a clip restriction to 3rds... or bolt action. I've taught most of grandkids to shoot with 7.62x39 starting young as 5yrs and it will hit as hard as 30-30. 6.8x39 Grendel in a bolt gun is one of my grandkids favs. You can get the kids a 308 but do...
