Do you let people borrow guns?

Most people only see the negative side of loaning out a firearm. If you loan out a gun to someone trained to use because there's is temporarily out for servicing and that person saves the lives of others with it, you just made an investment in human life.

Aside from needing to know the person's safety habits, I follow the same rules as loaning tools. It has to come back when they're done, at least as nice as when I handed it over. I'm fine with them coming back broken (from normal use) or dirty, as long as they're up-front and it's because they didn't know how to take care of that issue.

That's why coworkers actually looked forward to loaning me tools. Not only did I return them, I brought them back cleaned, oiled, and adjusted.

As my grandpappy said, "I'd let you borrow my wife before I'd let you borrow my gun."

Perhaps, but as my Gramps used to say about the farm... I have what I have because I've managed to keep it. In a world where you can be successfully sued for someone injured using your powered lawn mower to trim hedges loaning anything from chain saws to firearms must be done with a lot of thought.

In the right circumstance I would as long as it was not something I did not want damaged/lost or stolen. I have a couple out now that have been for a couple years. I have a large safe full of them at my brothers house and he is free to use any of them anytime he wants.

I have a hunting rifle that is purposed as a "loaner." It is a bolt action youth model with a slip-on recoil pad that brings it back to full length, specifically so that it can be used by people of different sizes. I'm happy to loan it to acquaintances who are interested in getting into hunting. So yes, I would loan a gun.

Generally to my dad out brother I have no issues loaning a gun for as long as they need.

For others, I'm willing to loan someone a gun for a match or a hunt while I'm there but they're not taking it home with them.

Depends on who it is and what the circumstances.

I never have loaned out a gun, but I might. I should add, I've never had anyone ask to borrow one.

If I know them well enough, then yes. A friend of mine from church has been testing out my FS M&P9 for the last 3 weeks. He may be buying one.

Not an option , period. Something happens to the weapon and all you`ll hear is ..................sorry!

Only relatives and in-laws (Yes, I trust my In-laws!)

I have loaned them out before, never for years though.

I do depending on the person.

The person I refer to as my "brother" is actually my best friend (I have blood brother's as well, but they live in NJ & NYC, so sharing guns isn't a consideration). We live next door to each other. I pick his kids up from school every day. He has a key to my house, a code to my alarm and knows the combo to my vault. And I have all of his keys/codes/combos. We are even on each other's NFA trust's, so I have access to his NFA toys and vice versa.

There are a few other people that I will lend guns to. Longtime hunting/shooting partners come to mind. I have a pretty extensive collection. A lot of times people will ask me about a certain make/model and I may have one. I have no problem lending it to the right person for a quick trip to the range.

On the flip side I know a few people that I won't even tell where I live. Not a chance on earth I will be loaning them a thing.

Unless I sell one nobody gets to "use" my guns....maybe let someone shoot one while I'm with them but otherwise it's NO! NO! NO! Kinda have personal feelings about the care & feeding of my firearms.

I have never lent a firearm, but I would loan one to a family member if they were in dire need of it and could not risk doing the waiting period to buy one of their own.

I have made a loan in the past. Very short term...as in range trip or a week-end hunt...nothing extended...not even a week.

Loaned My LNIB German sig 220 to a friend for the firearms portion who was putting himself through POST academy to become a reserve cop. He had been a sworn officer 20 years previously. Got my sig back scratched up and filthy. Magazines had been dinged up. I had trusted him and he didn't even attempt to clean it before returning it. Sorry future friends, That guy ruined it for everyone. Want to shoot my gun ? Great I'll go to the range with you and stand there while you shoot it. Hell I may even provide the ammo. But loan it to you and let it out of my immediate control ? Not ever again in this lifetime.

Even an experienced shooter can make a mistake. If a lawsuit was filed regarding an incident involving my borrowed gun, I would certainly be named in the suit. Even if I wasn't there when it happened.

My shooting club has had only one shooting injury in it's history. A lady shooter (very experienced) got a hot shell between her tits when it ejected from her own gun. She was dancing around and shot her husband in the leg with the same gun. Not fatal thankfully.

If she had shot another person who was not her husband while shooting my borrowed gun, I'm sure I would still be paying a lawyer. At least.

I will let someone shoot a few rounds in a gun I have while at the range. But, I am right there at their elbow doing the RO thing the whole time they are shooting it.

Family members are no problem. My father, father-in-law, and brother have all borrowed guns from me at one time. I keep an extra hunting rifle in my truck during deer season and it gets used 2-3 times each year by a friend or family member for a variety of reasons but is always returned the same day.
I have maybe 2 friends that I would let borrow a gun if they asked but they have as many or more than I do so I doubt they ever will.

I'm going to say no, under all circumstances. I know both of my neighbor's really well and they are good people. Its not that I don't trust them, I'm just not going to loan out a $500 piece of my personal property to anyone.

As far as someone I don't know wanting to borrow a gun, no way! The legal liability there is enormous.

I'm VERY protective of my stuff, lol.

Of course I would/have not that it's come up much. Usually its someone wanting to try a gun out in which case we hit the range together.

Of course in my tight group of friends, if one took off with something or damaged it without making it right, or "sued" they know they'd be shunned by the rest of the group and none of us are greedy enough to lose the majority of their friends over lol.

The only guns I've loaned out have been youth rifles/shotguns for friends wanting to introduce their children to shooting sports. Now that my kids are grown and gone and their kids are too small, the guns are just sitting in the vault. I've heard that if they aren't used they will spoil.

Yes. I've loaned to friends and family members, a couple times for range trips, but usually for hunting situations.

I have with mixed results. Mostly it has worked out just fine. Loaned my best .22 to my bro-in-law to eliminate some pests on his small farm and he returned it very dirty. Next time he asked. I suggested helping him find one of his own. He took the hint and accepted my offer. But, mostly I would not loan guns at all. Too many pitfalls.
