Ever let someone borrow a firearm?

no i dont lend my guns out. to many "what ifs".

however, when i go to boot camp in a week, im lettin one of my good friends hold onto my H&R single shot .410. mainly because he just moved in with his stepbrother and they dont have any firearms in the house. its not a bad neighborhood but the worst one in the county is about a mile down the road. so i told him id leave it with him for that reason. hes very responsible and i trust him.

I think out of everyone I know the sum total of people I would loan a gun to is two and even then only because I know both of them very well and only if it were for a competition (Cowboy action shooting is HARD on the equipment and the sudden need for a backup so you can play is not unknown).

I won't let anyone borrow a gun- I will let just about anybody shoot it with me present. I had a buddy offer to let me borrow his AR-15 once, and I wouldn't take it because I was afraid of damaging it.

I don't loan out to family because they are the worst. It might get damaged or disappear completely (i.e.- get sold). The family usually sends me thier firearms, however, to shoot and maintain, so I am usually rotating guns in and out (and keeping a few of them). My goal is to get ahold of all of the family guns before my grandparents die so that they don't disappear. No one else in the family shoots, so it looks like I am getting all of the guns. Hopefully, I will have a son (or daughter) to teach the value of family heirloom guns.

I went shooting with a freind a couple of times, and let him use my guns at the range. He was an army veteran, and knew basic safety and self control, but he didn't own any firearms himself. One day, we were talking about disasters and riots, and he said that if he ever needed a gun, he would just come over and borrow one of mine. I told him that I would not loan him a gun. He was shocked.

I explained that the laws and political environment were such that any missuse of a gun had serious legal implications, this is California, thus I would not risk involving myself in a crime, thus I would not loan him a weapon. If the SHTF, he was on his own.

Since then he has purchased a nice XD.

I have let close friends use my stuff and I have used thiers. Not just anybody only those in the circle. One buddy has the land and range and just not worth saying no and the fact he is the most generous person I know makes it that much easier.

I would if they had a good reason...

However, after they asked me to borrow a gun or guns... my question would be WHY AM I NOT INVITED!!!

I have on two occasions. Both went very well.

I loaned a shotgun to one of our church pastors for a family hunting trip. It was a last minute trip and He was not prepared.

My brother became a NRA safety instructor and was going to teach a class on gun safety to members of the CAP. He needed examples of various types of firearms for demo use.

When I was 14, someone on my paper route loaned me 2 .22 rifles. I do not see that happening these days. I loaned my guns to my father and little brother once. They ended up in police custody for a few months.

If it's a trusted friend who knows his way around it, sure.

One of my close friends wanted to teach a friend to shoot with a 10/22, but didn't have one lying around (he had a bolt-action .22LR rifle, but that's not what he wanted to use), so I loaned him mine. No big deal. He brought it back undamaged, cleaned, oiled properly, and with a new brick of ammo to say thanks.

Similarly, the same friend wanted to borrow my M1 Garand to do a bit of a comparison between the M1 and the M1A. I was busy and didn't have time to go with, so I loaned him the M1. He brought it back, cleaned, greased, oiled, and with a few boxes of M2 ball ammo.

I don't loan guns out to just anyone, but for those friends who I know and trust (and I can count them on one hand) with my guns, I have no problem with it.

When i first started shooting, I asked a friend to borrow his .22 autoloading rifle to go out and practice with. With a firm no, he told me that he never lets any one borrow his fire arms because it is too easy for the weapon to not return, mainly through negligence. I was a little shocked because we were really good friends. I respected his opinion and it shaped how I feel about lending out fire arms, which is never. I explain to new shooters the same rules, in that I will not loan out any of my guns. Any one else keep their guns to themselves? Or does anyone lend out their fire arms?
Once upon a time I did loan out a firearm. My 1894 Marlin .44 Mag was used by several of my fellow soldiers to supplement GI pay through the reduction of the pork population on FT Hunter-Liggett ("Camp" when we got there). However, several years later, two more incidents of loaned guns being returned, unapologetically, in unserviceable condition ended the practice. I discovered, the hard way, that my little group in CA had been exceptional, not the norm. I had one friend to whom I'd loan a gun but he died. Now, no gun is loaned (nor my knife).

Yes. I've got a chipmunk 22 that was my kids first gun, after they outgrew it I loaned it to a friend of mine's son who kept it for about 4 years until he outgrew it then it went to a kid that I knew who was 8 years old but real small due to a bout with leukemia. He kept it for 3 years now its with another friend who has 2 sons. My ruger red label 20 ga is used regularly by a friends wife who calls it "sweet thing". My marlin 1894 44 mag has been loaned out to a friend of mine who has 3 sons who have all killed their first deer with it. My ruger #1 270 has been loaned out to lots of kids for their first deer (its a single shot and super accurate and can be used by either right or left handed folks). I've never had a problem getting any of them back and I've been able to be responsible for lots of kids getting their first deer and it doesn't get any better than that. We need the kids to keep hunting and gun ownership alive. rugerman

I've borrowed my friend's Sigma 380 several times, and if he needed to borrow my 24/7, I would let him...although I'd probably just say that we'll go together :)

Any one else keep their guns to themselves? Or does anyone lend out their fire arms?
I generally don't lend out firearms; most who ask are those to whom I would not entrust one of my firearms. But I have done it under specific circumstances, and would again under those circumstances.

Some folks can be trusted, some can't. The older I get, the most time I spend with the former and the more I avoid the latter altogether.

there are three people whom would possibly ask me to borrow a firearm.

They have never asked, however.

If they were to ask they would get them. Plus a question of if they need any help.

there were four, but my dad is in a better place now.

I dont loan out many but I do have an old Winchester pump 20 guage that I
do loan out to friends to start thier kids shooting. I bought it in 1986 when I
was 12 years old and have a few diffrent lengths of stalks for it. It is not real
important to me but I would not want to lose it but getting the next
generation shooting is a good investment.

Just got paid for my 870, that a freind left in his truck after hunting in the rain ,lots of rust. I just lent another gun out. Only newer guns are lent out, not family heirloom's. And only to responible friends

being a college student i dont usually keep more than one firearm at my apartment, the only person allowed to use them with out my supervision is my father.

only let a few certain people borrow them, and then i only have a very few guns that i would let them use. the rest of my guns nobody touches without me being there.

loaning guns?

i've never had a problem with this. i would even loan out my Uzi (but not the MP5) but i think it's written somewhere that i must be in complete control of my Class III items at all times. i've only had 2 people ask and both times went without a hitch. one guy was a sheriff and the other a co-worker. both know their way around guns well enough, especially the simple ones that were loaned out. maybe i've just gotten lucky in my experiences.....

besides, ya never know when having someone else's prints on your weapons may come in handy :)

Never Have. Never Will.

If I'm not there neither are my guns.

I once long ago lent my surfboard to a good friend. It came back only after I went to get it and it was dinged. I've never lent it to anyone again.
