Your in the desert...mountain howitzer. Nuff said
They tried that...

There are some big questions today for UDOT as to how an avalanche control shell landed in the backyard of a Pleasant Grove home.

The military shell exploded just feet from the home, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

But it wasn't until late last night when authorities determined what it really was.

It was a 105mm howitzer shell that landed in the Connors backyard in Pleasant Grove.

There is a big hole in the ground where the shell impacted, but the shrapnel went in all directions and ripped right through the house and as far away as across the street.

Someone forgot to take one of the propellant bags out of the shell before they fired it. (Ok, so technically it wasn't in the "desert", but it almost landed in the desert. :D It's kind of funny now, but if it had happened about 10 minutes later than it did, the backyard where it landed would have been full of kids. One of my co-workers lived in that neighborhood at the time and two of his boys were always over at that house playing.

How I remember it in 2008...

That looks like my kind of place.

Well, I voted -Marlin .44 mag. ...but, Acera made a good point. Show him the list and let him choose! A bit of just blasting is fun but spend the most of time and ammo really working on marksmanship. The lessons learned will last a long time.

Ya'll have fun!

I opted for the Marlin 44 (three Marlins on one trip) and my newest AR.

My nephew enjoyed plinking our steel swingers and orange target ball with the rifles. Scorching hot day and no shade in sight, we made due and had fun. He takes his time with the 22 mag bolt rifle but wow, like all young men are want to to he just wanted to mag dump that AR. The orange ball was scared but survived unscathed by 5.56 M193.

He took one look at the bullets for the 44 and shook his head NO.
I tried to demonstrate that even a near miss from the mighty 44 could get that ball rolling while a direct hit sent it flying. Still no. but we found something he really did enjoy...

He absolutely ate up shooting my Colt Frontier Scout. Takes a while to burn through 200 rounds when you have to load them one at a time, shoot 'em and empty each chamber. But he got pretty good at it. "Just like John Wayne's gun".

My campsite was very much like remembered it, wide open skies, few people but reasonably accessible.

K98. Not even close. Some love for the milsurp bolt guns. Usually it's one of the springfields that goes out with me, but that's only because I haven't got around to restocking the K98 back to original yet...

I go shooting up around the Mogollon Rim in AZ. Same sort of problem with an individual that was leery of large center fire pistol rounds. Took along a H&R Handirifle in 357 max. Started with 38 sp and worked our way up. One shot break open rifle, chopped 18" barrel with iron sights. Works well out to 100yds. I wound up giving the young lady the rifle.
Getting old and handing out what I can no longer really use. Come Nov I will be a septuagenarian.

FYI the 'public shooting area' near Moab is one of the worst backstops I have ever seen. I cleaned up a ton of broken computer cases, bottles and cans.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy.

Two guns for the dusty trail...

Haha your descriptions were pretty funny…

I don't know how old your nephew is but if he is older i'd go with the lever gun. Feels fitting for a desert shoot.. If you are worried about recoil at all I'd go with the AK since he has shot the AR.

No matter what this sounds like fun and I'm sure he'll have a great time.
