Wow.... I wonder where that came from? ...... I'd love to know the history on that one from 1945 to 2017. Probably an old war trophy that never got registered ?
That is the most likely explanation, because of the type of weapon and remoteness from europe.

Even today at something like 450 rounds of 9mm per minute, an MP40 would be capable of injuring or killing someone, as hard as that is to believe. MILLIONS were made, and WW2 wasn't that long ago for durable goods like firearms.

I always wonder why people flip their lid when someone posts pictures of MP40s, Mausers, PPshs, etc. being used in current conflicts. They act as if they're using medieval handgonnes or something.

That's because it's a submachine gun, not an assault rifle. The StG-44/MP-44 is the actual assault, or storm rifle.
Got to shoot one of those last year, WAY cool!

And I recently read that the MP40 wasn't used as much by German soldiers as portrayed by Hollywood, mostly officers used them. In combat, I personally would want a rifle, not an MP40, Thompson, or any other pistol caliber SMG - unless it was close quarters combat......

The MP-40 I saw in the stories abut this event has the barrel hacked off at the frame nut. Was that done by the criminals or was the gun butchered by the cops after being taken, so it wouldn't "tempt" them?

Likely a WWII war trophy. There's even been Bren guns seized in the past, which were never legal - they were smuggled home from abroad after WWII. The illegal gun trade in Australia in Melbourne and Sydney seems to be booming of late judging by media coverage of seized items, but a lot of it is freshly imported, like AR15s that post-date them being banned. Literally being mailed into the country or hidden in imports.

Unfortunately for the relic that's the subject of this article, it will 99% likely be destroyed rather than rendered inert for display somewhere.

Cooldill- people who flip their lids that any deadly weapon can be an effective weapon are likely civilian (Wannabe SEALS) who will always be keyboard commandos.
We are blessed to have them as advisors.

Would have been cut down by the crims. Sawn off shotguns and rifles (both stock and barrel) are commonly displayed as seized items.

I recall one news story where a highly collectible Purdey 12ga worth some serious coin was recovered with the barrels sawn off. Thieves had no idea what they had taken before cutting it. Gun was worth more than the crimes that it was used in.

I dimly remember reading many years ago that a shotgun was stolen from a French museum, some priceless on of a kind made for royalty...and the criminals hacksawed the barrels. My memory may be off, that was a long time ago.

Just under a million . . .

A total of 40,576 MP38 and 869,792 MP40s sub-machine guns were produced.

My Dad had an Mp40 "sneak-back" from WW2, that after he thought about it for a year or two, threw in the Guadalupe River (south-central Texas) 1947.

The term "assault rifle" is a misnomer! It is simply a term used by the anti-gun crowd to vilify firearms! The term "assault" anything. i.e. knife, fry pan, baseball bat, panty hose, gun, only has validity AFTER someone attacks someone else with it. Until that happens any THING including the items listed is/are simply tools (or wearing apparel)! It is the (violent) act that moves any item into a valid "assault" category. We should NEVER allow anyone to use the derogatory term usage within our hearing without challenging them.

The StG 44 is literally designated "Sturmgewehr 44," or assault rifle 44. The one firearm where referring to it as assault rifle is technically correct.
