Hello, we are with the Government and are here to help.

The Chicago Patch reported that a ballistic vest, three firearms – two Glock handguns and one M4 carbine rifle – and SWAT tactical equipment were among the items that were in the stolen car.

Other equipment, including a stun grenade, ammunition and a gas mask, were abandoned in the area and retrieved by police.

Going into a crime ridden place geared up for battle and leave the car running when you get out?

"Shootings in the city have dropped by 14 percent in the first six months of 2017, as compared to 2016. The city has recorded 1,752 shootings in the city so far this year. Of those shot, 309 have died, according to Chicago Police statistics as reported by the Chicago Sun Times."

I find that hard to believe because you can't have guns in Chicago

:ninja::ninja::cool:

I can't believe the agent did that.......... And in a high crime area. If I have so much as one gun in my vehicle my personal rule is NEVER walk away from it without locking it; regardless of what area I'm in. Ever notice how so many crimes are committed where nobody is expecting it?

this happens about one a month in Chicago. It is only news this time because it was an FBI agent.

Hmm a vest, two Glocks and an M4. I wonder what the Chicago gangs would do with such items? Oh wait, Halloween is only 3 months away, they must be getting their costumes ready.

The ATF had a full auto M4 and other gear stolen from a vehicle in Milwaukee a few years back. Can only imagine if it was you or me who left Class 3's unattended and they were stolen.

Twenty years ago a SWAT team of FBI agents headed for training left all their gear in an SUV overnight in a motel parking lot. Yup, everything, including all their weapons, i.e., full auto, gas grenades, etc., stolen with the SUV.

As I recall, two years ago an FBI sniper lost his rifle when it was stolen from his vehicle.

Guess not much has been learned about walking away from a vehicle with weapons in it. The rule of the agency I worked for was never to leave a weapon in our private vehicle off duty, or suffer the dire consequences if it was lost.

Here's the article from back then re: the stolen SWAT SUV:

FBI SWAT Van Is Stolen, Stripped of Its Weapons
Crime: Truck is found burned after guns, other assault gear are taken in theft at Memphis hotel.
June 04, 1997| From Associated Press

MEMPHIS — An FBI SWAT van was stolen from a hotel parking lot, stripped of weapons, ammunition and assault gear and then burned, officials said Tuesday.

The gutted shell of the GMC Suburban was found in a poor industrial neighborhood in north Memphis, minus M-16 and MP-5 rifles, grenade launchers, tear gas equipment, ammunition, helmets and bulletproof vests with the FBI insignia.

The van was stolen overnight from a Budgetel hotel on the eastern edge of Memphis. FBI agents from Little Rock had brought the van and the weapons to town to attend an anti-terrorism training exercise.

No arrests had been made and authorities were searching for the weapons Tuesday, said John W. Hancock, in charge of the FBI's Memphis office.

This happens on a very regular basis, yet we can't let law abiding civilians have full autos because some criminal will inevitably steal them and instantly become an unstoppable super villain.

Speedo66:
We live near Memphis.

The local tv news station reported that the FBI agents, or such, were eating in a restaurant near Sycamore View/I-40, with their trucks in clear view While They Ate, from what I remember.
The weapons were stolen From the truck(s), which was parked At, or Near the restaurant.

Either my memory is bad (likely) or somebody later changed the story reported to other elements of the media.

That is a relatively small score for them. They usually prefer to shop at the rail yards where they can steal their guns in bulk.

Three major gun thefts from a Norfolk Southern rail yard in Chicago over three years highlight a deadly confluence of urban yards in the very gang- and homicide-plagued neighborhoods on the South Side where many of the city’s homicides occur. (March 3)

The 2015 heist of the 111 guns, as well as one in 2014 and another last September from the same 63rd Street Rail Yard highlight a tragic confluence. Chicago's biggest rail yards are on the gang- and homicide-plagued South and West sides where most of the city's 762 killings happened last year.

For the life of me, I cannot remember ever leaving an unattended vehicle running - that was a lesson my Dad beat through my thick skull before I started driving. Doesn't mean I haven't done it in 30+ years of driving, but I can't remember ever doing it. I have left guns in unattended vehicles back in the day, but when a buddy had his car "smash and grabbed" while he was inside paying for his gas, losing a nice Smith 357 mag and a 1911, I stopped doing that, too. :)

I used to leave my car running all the time if I was just popping in to get a coffee or something. I figured it was less wear and tear on the engine to just let it run for two minutes, and the car was so old I wasn't really concerned about someone stealing it. But I've never left a car running or unlocked with a gun in it, that I can tell you.

Tell me you've never left an unattended vehicle running and then you can criticize.
Well, I've worked for governments (and in law enforcement) for many years.

One word: Hubris.

Tell me you've never thought something couldn't happen to you ...

I will freely admit that I've left vehicles running . . . that was usually in my own driveway, in the winter. What I have never done is left a vehicle running: (1) just past midnight; (2) in a major city; (3) while hauling firearms and SWAT tactical gear around. Quite frankly, I'd be hard pressed to devise a better plan to get stuff stolen.

I can't help but assume there would be criminal charges if this were a civilian who left a legally owned machinegun in a running, unlocked car under such circumstances. Just the fact that they acted so recklessly with taxpayer property is bad enough...well just the fact that they acted so recklessly period. Could you imagine if you were working for a private employer and did this on the clock with company property??? Oooh, there would be hell to pay...
