I'm looking for a 9MM handgun similar to my Ruger SR9C (which I love), about the same WEIGHT & SIZE. Can be a single stack. Max I want to spend is $550. I know I can just find another SR9C, but variety is the spice of life right? I have a Walther PPQ M1 that's not going anywhere. Tried the new S&W M&P EZ 9, lasted one day, hated it. Open to any brand EXCEPT Taurus & Glock. Looked at a Sig 365XL, interesting but somewhat iffy reviews. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My first thought was the M&P 2.0 subcompact, same as the old 1.0 compact.

But hammer fired and slightly bigger gets you a CZ 75 compact or one of its clones

All my Centerfire handguns are for serious self-preservation, regardless of their brand or configuration
That may well be your purpose and objective, but it you vary what you carry, your ability to defend yourself effectively (as opposed to your ability to handle and shoot them well under less grave circumstances) is impaired.

There is simply not good reason to pursue variety as "the spice of life" when it comes to defensive weapons.

Now, there may be good reason for one to carry different weapons under different circumstances--dress, fo example.

It is best to use different sizes of the same basic model, that handle and are operated in exactly the same way, if at all possible.

There are many guns in your price range. Here are a few that I have and would recommend.
Beretta APX

A 1911 many to choose from

You could build a Polymer 80

You can find M&Ps on sale for around $300, but the new M2.0 will run you more.

There are many Sig P320 out there. I picked up this M17 for under $550. And I’m pretty sure they fixed the problem with the going off when dropped. :)

Lessee, no Glocks, no Taurus, and you hated the M&P EZ9, which probably rules out the Shield. The M&P 2.0 Compact seems like an obvious choice. I'd also say the CZ P10C or the CZ 75 Compact of some flavor.

ETA: I just read your thread on TFL. The problems you have with the EZ do not seem to be likely to show up in the Shield, so I will throw that in there as one you should consider.

If you are not completely put off by the M&P line as a whole how about considering the new M&P M2.0 Subcompact? 12 Rounds with a flush mag and works with any double stack 9mm mags. It will have just a slightly longer grip than the SR9C I believe.

Smith and Wesson M&P9 M2.0 compact. Similar size as your SR9c. Comes with 3 mags and cost about $400. That leaves you $150 for ammo!

I have an M&P M2.0 Compact 4" and in my opinion it's closer to SR9 than the SR9C. It's almost identical to a G19 in size. If you are referring to the 3.6" it has a slightly shorter barrel/slide than the G19 but still closer to that than a G26 (Which I equate with the SR9C).

Today I looked at the Ruger Security 9, Walther PPS & CZ P10-C & S. The CZ is definitely a contender.

The polymer CZ75 compacts are very nice pistols.

I have a Turkish clone that I got for around $300 OTD. It's a very nice shooter.

I've kind of been in your same boat recently. I found that the CZ P10C felt really good in the hand and the trigger was fantastic. I also fell in love with the CZ P01 and P01 Omega. Those were the two most impressive guns to me. Everything else just seemed kind of "ok".

I also have a P365 for a carry gun and I can't imagine needing any other small gun for CCW. It's absolutely perfect for me.

Okay, I'm confused. Did I miss something?

Some of these suggestions don't really seem close to the same size and weight as the SR9C.

Would suggest most of what already said and would add the SA XD subcompact and Hellcat. Both great firearms I put ahead of the SR9c. If SA comes out with a15/16/17 round mag for the Hellcat and an XL type version I’ll be giddy as a school girl.

What works best for you is dependent on you, your hand and what you are used to. That said I would consider:
1) 1911 - RIA seems to be a lot of bang for buck. Shooting a 1911 is very unique. Personally I can shoot my 1911's better than any other gun I own.
2) XD mod 2 - On paper it doesn't look much different than any of the other plastic fantastics but for me it just works... and works really nicely! Several first time shooters that I have taken out have ended up really liking the XD mod 2 and ended up buying one as their first gun.
3) Springfield Hellcat - I haven't had the opportunity to try one yet but it is on my short list.
4) CZ-75 - Many people love the CZ's for me they are just... ehh... Any of these pistols might be the best ever or they might be just... ehh... to you.
5) Kahr CM9 - Or any of the Kahr 9mm's. They have a very nice combination of size and comfort for me.

As far as variety of different pistols vs mastering a single pistol... I prefer to master a variety of pistols. I find that with enough ammo and range time I can pick up any of my many pistols and shoot them very proficiently without thinking about which gun I have in my hand. If you are able to put in the practice time I feel it is an advantage to master several weapons instead of just one. I do not own any duplicates of the same weapon.
