Hey y'all, I just picked up a Savage Model 6D Deluxe yesterday and overall it's in pretty nice shape. The only thing wrong with it is the follower spring is a little worn out. I ordered a new spring but I'm not sure how to take the mag/follower assembly apart. By the looks of it you would just need to unscrew the knurled knob on the top, and it wiggles just a bit but not enough for me to want to try to force it. Is there any trick to this or do I just need some elbow grease?

I have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of the 6D, or anything else for that matter. I am, however, a well loved Internet Expert, so here goes: Looking over the schematic I found at gunpartscorp.com, it looks like the screw, part number 38, will be relevant to your question.

The good Col. has you started in the right direction, but part #38 is a pin that has to be driven out , not a screw. Be sure to drive the pin out from the long end, not the end that is flush with the mag tube body. Some, not all, of the pins are knurled or grooved on the end that is flush.

After waiting forever for the new spring to arrive, I received the replacement and was able to switch it out thanks to the info. Thanks guys!
