I have been looking for a cheapo plinker for a while now.

I found one. My $35 Dollar Pawn Shop Special :)

Its a Stevens/Savage Model 86D. I have no idea how old this thing is, but IMHO its got character. Its wood and steel, no plastic stock here. Nice old worn broken in feel. Again, just what I was after. Honestly, popped into the pawn shop looking for maybe a good deal on a guitar and just happened to glance at this in the gun case. It was marked 60 bucks. I asked to take a look at it. The guy said well theres some issues with that one. Ok explain please I say.

The bolt does not come out of the gun. Pull the trigger and yet it dont come out. I dunno the guy says. Also he points out to me the trigger is wobbly, its flying around the trigger guard. Working the bolt though, it will go click if you pulled it all the way back. I look in there and see this metal thing flopping about, also noticed the trigger guard appears to be on backwards, its shaped very odd. So I tell the guy, Im pretty good tinkering with things. Rock bottom price. He goes and consults with the bossman, they come back and quote 35 bucks. I figured for that price, it could make a nice conversation piece to hang over the mantle.

I said, done, I'll take it. Brought it home, removed the stock, guess what, there is this brass retainer spring thing that is bent out of shape. I go and reshaped it back and viola. Fixed alot of the trigger play. The pin and the pivot holes are bit worn from the years so it still swings a bit side to side but the forward and backward motion are tamed now. With the entire barrel and action off the stock, Im able to pull the trigger back all the way now and viola, bolt comes right off.

I clean everything up as best I could, put it all back together, putting the trigger guard on right this time, reshaped it just a tad, success.

Everything is correct, the bolt works, comes off with the trigger pulled not hitting the trigger guard now. Bolt cycles, trigger pulled, I heard click. Sounds good. The only thing is that worn trigger pin. Oh well, that Im not all that worried about, it doesnt affect the functionality of things.

Taken to the range, the tubes loaded up, I work the bolt, take aim and fire.

The distinct sound of a .22 going off is what Im treated to. Most Excellent. Pretty accurate too the age and everything. I mounted a crappy Air rifle scope out of desperation, it works sort of, not very good though. Hey the price was right because I already had it from a previous BB rifle. So......

Not bad I think for my 35 bucks and a few mins of my time. Maybe I can get ahold of a Digicam some day soon and actually provide a proper range report.

Just wanted to share my pawnshop treasure with you folks. A good Rimfire scope is next on the agenda for this lil puppy. I wanted a cheapo plinker, I got my wish :D

Ah, there you are!

Good to see your writeup; hope to see some pics when you get them up.

Are the iron sights so bad on that critter, or do you just feel like scoping it? Might be able to find some good aperture sights for it, once you figure out what it's compatible with. Just my personal bias; I'm an iron-sight guy.

Beater .22 can make some fun projects. After the New Year I'll write up my beater 1953 Marlin 39A lever-action rifle. Refinished the stock and cleaned out a half-century of gunk, etc. You seem a bit handy with the metally bits and whatnot; it's great that the rifle ended up with someone who knew how to make it shoot again.

Congrats on your find, -MV

Oddly I recently bought the exact same gun (86D) in a pawn shop for $50. It is in remarkably good condition and it shoots great.

Those old 22's can be had for next to nothing and are great for collecting. I guess people inherit grandpa's old rifle and sell it. The pawn shops around here are loaded with old 22's in very good shape. I have a small safe chock full of them. I snatch them up regularly.

I also have a real similar rifle, a stevens 87B. $50 OTD at a gun show. I have probably put 500r through mine, and it has never jammed, except when I forgot and loaded it with the bolt open:uhoh:
I love the thing, sure you will enjoy yours!

yep yep great lil go so far

Im actually in the market for a good Rimfire scope

Any suggestions?

Theres a Gunsmith that has 2 Mosin Nagants for sale and he also had a Bushnell Rimfire Scope for 50 bucks. Crazy, the scope will cost more than the gun but it appeared to be a good quailty scope. To answer Matthew's question, Iron's are not a problem, I just happen to like having some optics up top

Im most likely going to be purchasing one of those Mosins and this Bushnell scope, but again any other suggestions greatly appreciated

well i could buy a digicam but

well i could buy a digicam but....

Then I would have to put off the rimfire scope and the Mosin which I want one of those so badly

Im in a shooting a gun mood, not pictures right now so I would be spending that money on the other first before a digicam

Ill try and borrow one from a friend soon

:)

I got an old Remington 514 at the local shop for $15, someone had spray painted the thing with Black paint.
The stock looked like it had been covered in mud and dried.
Took the 514 home, tore it apart, cleaned everything, when I was finished,
I oilded up the metal parts, put everything back together, Linseeded the stock and buffed it good.
Damn thing looks almost new and shoots better than I would have thought.
I did have to make an ejector spring.
Took it back to the shop where It came from and they thought it was a diff. rifle..

Total cost.......$15..rifle
$ 5 paint thinner
$ 3 cleaning supplies
Total...$23 Bucks!

And if I would stop buying Guns I might have some money to buy
a camera!......so sorry NO PIC's

I got this Springfield .22 (I've read that it has to be pre-'47 due to Stevens stopping the use of the Springfield name at that time but I don't know if that's accurate? ) from the used rack because it was in totally perfect condition and with a $50 tag was almost a freebie due to talking them down $25 on a Walther I would've bought anyway.
