I was cleaning my Hornday LnL AP press yesterday evening. I noticed the small primer slide assembly is starting to show wear on the primer seating hole.

I did some quick searching and noticed that others have had problems with the part giving out requiring the purchase of replacement primer slide assembly. Some of these folks have also indicated that it is due to the metal the part is fabricated being aluminum and it makes it the weakest link in the press.

Does anyone know if there's a company that make aftermarket primer slide assemblies for both large and small primers?

I looked around the internet and only came across hornady brand assemblies which look to be made of the same material.

I'd rather purchase something that I know won't give out in the long run. TIA

I have some time before the part wears out, but I'd like to be prepared for when it gives out so as not to come to work stoppage when reloading.

Call Hornady. Their customer service is first - class. They will send you a free replacement.
They have been great. But it looks like a part that is not durable and will eventually give out in time. I was just wondering if there were any aftermarket parts that I could purchase that are more durable before calling Hornady for a replacement. The last time I had a part break, Hornady was great in sending a replacement but I had to wait for the part to arrive. Thx

I'm using the same one for over 10+ yrs and 30k+ loads. Never a failure. I would confirm you indexing is right so the punch is not scraping it. There mad of zinc not aluminum. As long as the hole is centered it should be good to go.

I'm just a tad over 10k rounds. I was changing out the slide assembly from the large to the small is when I noticed it.

I did some perusing and found the part online which along with the pawl and rotating springs gave me the indication that the part can wear out. I have since replaced a set of pawls (before watching Highboy76 and making the correct adjustments) and a rotating spring and have purchased extras.

Upon further looking on the internet, I read in another forum that the break does occur. I posted to just see if there were aftermarket replacements before purchasing Hornady brand parts. I know Hornady is excellent with customer service, but I would rather have a couple of spares to keep me from having to wait for a replacement part.

Not saying this hasn’t or won’t happen but a picture of the slide would help. Looked over both of mine and can’t see anything out of the ordinary and I’ve had a lot of primers through them.

Here are some PICs. As you can see it's on the bottom side of where the primer sits. I would think if it were primer seating issues, the problem would be on the top side of the primer slide. Pictures are of both the large and small primer slide.

Both small and large ones I have look pretty much like they did when I got the press. The small one does look similar to yours but I haven’t had any issues with priming and there has been a lot of both size of primers that have gone through my LNL in the last 5 years. Only time the priming has been an issue is if I didn’t install and tighten properly or I did something stupid.
Maybe it was designed to be sacrificial against the steel sub plate. Oh well if it gives me any grief Hornady will get a call and I’m sure they will send me a new one.
If I was looking at trying to get or make a replacement I think I would be making it out of delrin.

The poor thing looks brand new. You should polish that sucker and slightly bevel the edges and really polish that hole on both side so it has a nice slight radius to it.

It does since I cleaned it, but it looks like wear on the bottom as it's not uniform. According to reeferman though, they look like that from the factory. Thx

Some of the things like the primer shuttles are rough and could have been finished better. I took some 1000 grit sandpaper and laid it on a piece of 1/2 plate glass I have and ran the shuttles over it. Also knocked any edges off of it and the primer hole in the shuttle.
After looking at my small primer shuttle with a magnifier it looks like a small piece of the casting might have broken off or wasn’t casted right. It has and still works fine. The large primer shuttle doesn’t seem to have this.
If it does give issues then I’ll get a new one from Hornady then try and make one from Delrin and use the wheel from the old one.

I wouldn't be surprised if that divot in the front is to allow a small amount of debris to exist but not cause misalignment of the primer or something to do with the casting of that piece.

My guess is damage from the shuttle going home when removing the primer weight rod at the end of the loading sessions. I have noticed the tip of the shuttle hitting the primer plunger a couple of times when I was not careful about raising the ram a little before releasing the shuttle.

My guess is it's still fully functional. Keep using it. Call Hornady for a replacement/backup.

The casting doesn't always look real purdy on the bottom side.
Mine looks like that/been using it that way a long time.
You can send your pic to Hornady and they will send you a replacement. Keep your old one as a spare.

Years ago, I managed to somehow bend the bajesus out of the pin the roller wheel rides on. Nobody's fault but mine, but it still shut me down. Hornady sent me one anyway
I then bought 1 of each, both OEM, large and small from Midway just to have one on hand 'in case'.
After they showed up, I attempted to straighten the bent pin. My straightening was a success, so now I have (3) small and (2) large primer slides.

Always remember to keep the primer slide area clean/free of powder. Always.

Many of us keep a can of air on the bench just for that. I usually blow out the debris after every 100 rounds or so. And every so often, or when I change calibers, I hit the shuttle and track with a couple sprays of the One-Shot cleaner/dry lube.

It looks like the shuttle wasn’t forward all the way and the primer seater plug took a bite out of it. The only thing that shuttle does is move the primer from the drop tube to the seater plug. Under normal operations there’s very little stress or wear on it. I’d run that in my press for another 50K rounds. As others have said, you get powder grains, pieces of bullet coatings, shavings of lead all falling down in that pocket and then the shuttle doesn’t quite line up the primer and you’ll feel the crunch of the primer going in the pocket at a slight angle. Yours is fine, but Hornady will most likely ship you a replacement and you’ll have a spare. Good luck!
