Changing my home defense pistol

I picked up an XD mod 2 sub compact in .45acp because it was on sale as a bit of a impulse buy (A really good black Friday deal I recall). I was so impressed with it that it has become my home defence gun.

I like that with a full height magazine it holds 13 +1 rounds of .45acp and handles like a full size pistol. With the flush magazine I still get 9 +1 rounds and it slips into a robe pocket easily if I am taking the trash out or other chore. I was shocked at how nice the trigger is, not too light like my match 1911's but smooth and easy to shoot. I also really like the extra safety of the grip safety without having to work a manual safety. There is just enough bottom rail for a light which I had mounted for a while then removed.

When I go to the range I prefer metal guns but for me the XD mod 2 sub-compact in 45acp is a perfect home defence pistol for how I like to use a home defence gun. I have found the light weight and small size to be quite and advantage over the Beretta 92 INOX it replaced in the go to home defence pistol roll.

I changed home defense from 357 revolvers to 9mm semi-auto. No hesitation to adapt to 9mm, 40/45 hype doesn't impress me. I settled on Glock for the MOS slides and ubiquitous mags. Here's my first two.

Small world. I am 57 years old, public school teacher for 29 years, just retired. My dominant hand has started giving me trouble after an injury.

Using only my left hand, I had two 38 revolvers I could operated decently. My semiautos were useless.

Using 22's is the best way to warm up for "real" shooting. They are excellent practice for handgun shooting in general, and the ammo is cheap. A good quality 22 revolver is expensive. Nice semi-autos like the Rugers and Brownings are affordable and very accurate.

As a teacher with a modest income, I was able to acquire nice handguns because I bought almost all of them used. Military surplus and police turn-ins are my favorites. My 45 M&P was a police trade-in that hadn't been shot much, came with box and spare mags, cost $300 or something like that.

I also got a Glock 22 the same way. If you have a G22, it can become a G17 inexpensively. Several companies make/made conversion barrels to turn the G22 into a 9mm. My conversion barrel cost $99 on sale, and I paid $25 for a G17 magazine. Now my G22 can become a G17 in less than a minute and use cheap 9mm practice ammo.

How about a nice Walther PPQ in 45 while they’re still available used at fair prices?

You’d have that consistent trigger pull and a much lighter, crisper break than Glock or DAO. Better ergonomics too.

I looked at them when I was shopping for a full sized 45, but couldn’t stomach the $800 price tag with only one mag. Otherwise, it was perfect. (I wound up with a Springfield XD-45 Tactical, which I like, but the trigger’s not in the same league)

chaim, if you are looking for a 22lr handgun too (as you certainly should, haha) why not keep your centerfire and rimfire selections in the same family for more familarity and complementary training? while i have none of these models, a pair of s&w m&p or glock 45acp and 22lr semiauto pistols come easily to mind.

Here are a couple shots of the XD-45 Tactical. I like its full length barrel & sight radius. As long as it's going to be too big to CC, I figure it may as well have all the advantages of a full size pistol. I might get a laser for it soon.

I’m a revolver guy. But I sleep well with my CZ RAMI -P 9 mm sub-compact next to my bed. One in the chamber, hammer down, safety off gives first shot DA, the rest will be SA. 14 shots total: reassuring when imagining having to use it as I wake up. It has never failed to function with a wide variety of ammo.

I do like the MOS slide (and similar on other makes), like I said, with my aging and diabetic eyes I may need an RMR sooner rather than later. Magazines are part of why I'm finally giving Glock a try (that and the availability of other accessories as well). MD has odd mag laws. Most states with mag limits outright ban standard capacity mags (they may grandfather those you already own, but you can't buy more). MD only bans selling, buying or giving them here. I can go to another state, buy as many as I want and bring them home. But, no mail order (even if sent to my cousin's house in VA) since I am in MD. So, mag availability at the stores is an important criteria for any gun with a greater than 10 round capacity (and Glock mags will be found anywhere that sells mags).

I've thought about that, though any trigger time will largely transfer to other guns. The M&P, Glock 44 or a revolver are among my top choices, but I'm also thinking about a few that won't correlate to something I already own as directly

You know, I think the mag capacity thing is funny. Before the '94 Clinton ban, no one thought of it. Afterwards, we were indignant about being limited to 10 and 45 ACP had a surge as a result.

When I first started going to the range, I felt like I should shoot the full magazines. ...but with a 9 mm, 3 mags in a hi-cap gun is a whole box of ammo. That gets expensive QUICKLY, as a box can be shot in about 1 minute.

Nowadays, I do want the full capacity magazines just on principal and maybe future resale value, but when I go to the range, I only load 5 rounds in them and just get a lot of mag-swapping practice. When I carry an auto, I don't top off the mag; don't use the +1. That last round is just too tight; I don't have confidence in it.

Ironically, the only GOOD reason I might want higher capacity is for a possible scenario like the one in Greenwood, IN. Those extra rounds would be nice to have without a reload if I'm trying to take a mall shooter down at 40 yards with my short-barreled carry gun. (currently a 5-shot snubby!)

Yeah, when carrying occasionally out of state (on a UT non-resident permit), the standard capacity mags were a nice bonus. I have one for my M&P 40c and I have a few for my PCR and P01 (I also have a few for non-carry guns). However, one or two per gun was enough. How many will I carry at any time, and I can use a few 10 rounders at the range if I need to. Now, with my MD permit only being a matter of waiting for the MD State Police to process it (they are slow), it somehow feels different. I either want a gun where I know I'll easily find mags and they'll be relatively cheap, or I want a gun that standard capacity is 10 or fewer rounds.

At the range, I like a few of the 12-17 round mags (depending on the gun), but if I have 10 round mags, I use them just as much as the standard capacity mags. It is just when out and about that I absolutely want the standard mags.

As for the Clinton ban, I remember getting my CZ 75B. It was after the ban, but the Turkish imports (and a few regular 75Bs when they were out of the Turkish contract guns) had one 15 round mag. CZ apparently shipped a number into the country before the ban so those mags were grandfathered. That was a huge selling point for me when I first got my CZ. Now, it seems almost funny (especially before MD instituted its version of a magazine sales ban).

Keep training with whatever guns you currently use... find a doctor that can put your diabetes in remission... it is possible. Your eyesight will improve.

There are sooooo many good options out there these days! And no real reason to go .45 if you want a 9 or 40

My personal bedside pistol is a Glock 17 with 21 round Magpul magazine. It is what I prefer.
YMMV

My diabetes isn't too bad now and I've been off insulin and other injectable meds for a couple years. When it is under control it may not do additional damage, but the nerve damage it already did does not repair itself, so while neuropathy, eyesight and other areas may not get further damaged, the damage done is done (not to mention the regular age related declining eyesight, I've had glasses since long before I had diabetes)

I am a fan of all three calibers. I've long preferred 9mm and .40SW for carry. In fact, to some degree, my choosing .45 for HD some years ago was partially for the theoretical advantage of lower chances of overpenetration, but even then, there were good self defense rounds in 9mm and .40SW that would work just fine without that worry. To a large degree, I went with .45ACP for my home defense gun: 1) because I had the P250 already for carry but was "retiring" it from carry duties, 2) I was moving away from 1911s for self defense roles, and 3) I wanted an excuse to keep a .45 for something other than just a range gun. So, I may well pick another .45 to have an excuse to keep a .45 in a defense gun role, though for now (for now possibly just being a few days, a few months, or even a few years), I'll use the P01 and/or Glock 22 in that role.
