Talk you out of buying an M1 Carbine?

You folks are all a bunch of codependent enablers!

Resist the urge for an M1 carbine. The round is anemic at best and not made in any decent configurations like JHP. I think all the fodder is strictly FMJ. In this it's exactly like the 9mm FMJ: It drills neat holes (when it's not jamming) with no expansion. I personally love my Garand if only for the ummmm wide variety of ammo I can find in plentiful amounts: AP, API, APIT, to name but a few. If you like carbines there are better choices and you might consider something somewhat exotic: Kel-Tec Sub-2000 in either 40 or 9mm. Very reliable, very accurate, mags and ammo plentiful and it even folds in half to a neat 18" overall. Very 007. I expect the new "Q" to issue these shortly.

I think a garand would serve you better, I shot my first deer with one. I would not use a carbine deer hunting. Oh I got a carbine also just before going to Iraq, I did not get to shoot it but my kids have already shot a case of wolf through it!!!

Well, try as I might...

I watched "To Hell and Back" again searching for answers for you, and if it was good enough to be a favorite of Audie Murphy, I have trouble thinking of anything wrong with it. They are fun to shoot, can't think of anything bad about them.

I'm sure this will talk you out of buying one of THOSE things

Well I assume you knew you would get this type of suport from THR.
By the way folding or full stock?

It is a full stock. I don't know enough about them to know if it has been rebuilt or not, but @ $650 I willl assume it has been redone. Frankly I'm just buying it to be a range toy so the effectiveness of the caliber, and such does not matter to me. We will see what Fridays paycheck looks like. Perhaps I will have a pic to post by Monday :D .

BTW my wife hates all you guys. Oh and wheres a good source for magazines for the carbine?

Those little M-1 carbines are just plain NEAT!! Yep, the round ain't much as far as rifle fodder goes; but that wasn't it's intended purpose. That carbine was designed to be light and handy for close in use; and for that, it works great. The 15 (or 30) round mags give it a lot of firepower in a small package. At this point of the game, it's an investment as well......especially a WINCHESTER!!!

(I know....you just started this thread so you can have your wife read it. "See honey.....I HAD TO BUY IT!!!)

NO, DON'T BUY IT.....

Ok. there you go. Now you wont buy it, right? Yeah sure. ha ha ha ha

Don't forget to get some ammo while you're there.

So is there any reason to not own one? I have always been a AR guy, but hey the M1 Carbine was the AR of its day right?

M1 carbines were the rage when I was a kid. I really liked the look of 'em and the lieutenant on "Combat" carried one and I thought it was SO cool and I wanted my step dad to get me an Iver Johnson .22 that looked like the M1 Carbine for Christmas. He says, "I have a gun just like that and your uncle Bill has it, I'll give it to you." It turned out to be a Mossberg M152, looked NOTHING like the M1 Carbine, and I ws a bit disappointed, but I learned to like the old Mossberg, still have it.

Over the years, I never bought a M1 Carbine despite the infatuation for the look. You used to could buy a brand new production M1 Carbine, forget the maker, and it wasn't all that expensive. However, what do you do with it? It's a wimpy cartridge, not suitable for deer sized game, a short range cartridge. Oh, you CAN hunt deer with it, but hell, I COULD hunt with a sling shot, too. Let's see, do I wanna use an M1 Carbine or a .257 Roberts? DUH! So, I never bought one. I still like the look, just have no use for an M1 Carbine and they've gotten expensive way beyond what they're worth. There was a company about 20 years ago chambering a .44 caliber cartridge or some such in the M1 Carbine. It was a little expensive, but that gun might have been a decent hunting rifle. One thing, M1 Carbines are REALLY handy and I'm a sucker for a light, handy rifle, probably why I like my M7 Remington so much. But, then, ain't much out there lighter or more handy than a Winchester 94 and I've never bought one of those either, despite the fact that I like the .30-30 round. As I've aged, I've settled on one rifle for most of my hunting. I own more than one, just that I have a favorite. Anything else I might buy is a toy. I have toys. I have a couple of SKSs, a Hakim, an old Mauser. Put what I paid for those four milsurps together and I couldn't buy an M1 Carbine at today's prices. I'll pass. My SKSs are enough range fun.

Those are just MY reasons. Everyone has their own thoughts on any given subject. But, underlining the reasons why I've never bought an M1 Carbine are that it's pretty much useless for the things I use a rifle for, hunting. I'm an outdoorsman and tend to think in terms of what I can hunt with a given round and the M1 Carbine is pretty pathetic as a round.

I gave 115 dollars for an SKS paratrooper carbine and found a Norinco rifle for 75 bucks. Now, back then, I coulda bought a M1 Carbine for what those two rifles cost, I guess. But, at the time, you could buy a 1000 round CASE of 7.62x39 for about 80 bucks with shippiing. Yeh, those were the days. And, 7.62x39 is a fairly good round compared to .30 Carbine. So, I got off into the SKSs for toys. They're not worth a whole lot, truth be told, either, and the price of the M1 Carbine has escalated, would have been the better investment. But, you don't foresee those things. Get what you want for your own reasons, don't follow my reasoning. Everyone has their own ideas about what or what they don't like or want or think is worth buying.

The time for M1 carbines has passed. Why would you want to buy one at this point ? The ones you see available are overpriced - at $250-$300 they are an OK value. As mentioned if you do not have a Garrand buy one. If you started collecting US military firearms several decades ago you would already have bought one at a reasonable price - it is easy to not buy one as there is no logical reason to own one for practical use as there are better options available. An AK is cheaper to shoot and maintain and has a modern day practical application.

The M1 I have, pic posted above is Inland and I got it for a very reasonable price. It's in new condition and it shoots very well. It is a most excellent anti-intrusion device for the home and if the stuff ever hits the perverbial fan it is still very capable of the purpose for which it was intended. It is a perfect piece to carry when out ATVing in the back 40. It does have a quality I have come to see that has been unmentioned so far. That is if you have a person i.e. girlfriend, wife, child who is new to shooting this is absolutely the perfect vehicle to teach that person the fundementals of shooting without beating or scaring them half to death. Heck if you got a person whom you don't want to learn to shoot hand them your 300 Win Mag. I guaranty they will NOT enjoy themselves nor will they shoot further. Besides my dad was a medic in Patton's 3rd Army in the big WW II and he carried one of these. And they are just plain cool ;)

Agree with the military bullets may not be the best, but a 100gr
Hornady half jacket @ 2000 fps is awsome !!! the 110 gr expanding
with do an adequate job within limits for most things. You might
consider reloading your own, as I suspect when the influx of CMP
are sold and fired, abundant ammo may become scarce. :)

There are so many more appropriate rounds for deer hunting, I'd never choose an M1 Carbine for that. If I got one, it'd be just because I have always thought they were way cool looking and fun to shoot. I have much better hunting rifles. Even my .357 Magnum carbine is superior and just as handy in the field. With .38s, it becomes a .22, also. :D Talk about your perfect training weapons! But, kids don't watch westerns anymore, so I guess that infatuation that I had would not be there for the modern kid.

The M1 Carbine was shunned by front line combat troops in WW2. My Uncle was quite down on them. He saw combat right through from the bridge at Ramagen over the Rhine to the surrender. Non-front line troops, officers, artillery, and such carried 'em because they were light and handy and easier to shoot with more range than a .45.

The full auto M2 version had some popularity in the jungles of Vietnam and lots of M1 Carbines were used by South Vietnamese as I understand it. But, in WW2, just ask yourself, would you rather be armed with a pistol cartridge, and not a big one at that, or a semi-auto battle rifle in .30-06? No brainer for me, ROFL! The little carbine definitely was needed, though, and had its place. It was effective in the jobs it filled. And, to me, it will forever be one of the sexier, best lookin' combat rifles of all time.

No, you shouldn't get it. No way. Not a Winchester M1 Carbine. Nope.

What did you say the name and phone number of the shop was?

Contact J&T Distributing to order a dozen GI magazines for it. They have plenty at shows around here and I always pick up half a dozen when they set up.

CorBon JHPs give it power like a .357 carbine, but in semiauto.

It is not a hunting carbine. They are great fun to shoot. They are a great piece of history. They have climbed in value and will continue to climb in value. Did I mention they are fun?

I got one from my grandfather. They're lots of fun at the range and probably a good small to medium game gun. Surprisingly accurate, low recoil, easy to teach someone to shoot on. I love them.
