Gene Roddenberry sold the original Star Trek series concept to the studio as being "a western in space".I watched it again last year and it struck me that it's much more of a Western than anything else. The only science fiction elements of the TV show are space ships. But the themes and characters are drawn from a mix of classic and noir Westerns.
