Silly myths you have had to fight with

Any of the good number of myths about what the Geneva Conventions (really the Hague Conventions, but they aren't even right about that) supposedly allows and disallows.

All of my guns-reloading equipment-scopes-ammo-ect. is better "more accurate" than yours because it costs more, even though I shoot larger groups than you.

Myth1 American made 7.62x39 ammunition uses .308 diameter bullets

Myth2 308 is more inherently accurate than 30-06

Myth3 "Knockdown power" in anything smaller than a 20mm cannon

Gun registration is mandatory...everywhere...for everything.

1911's are obsolete and no one loves them.

Looking at guns on a military computer is grounds for UCMJ.

A 19 y/o can't own a pistol.

Glocks WILL kaBoom, its just a matter of time.

"Gun Free Zones" work.

Guns are evil.

Shall I go on?

Hit a man in the hand with a 45 and it will tear his arm off.

A 'long tom' (30 inch or greater) shotgun has more reach than a shotgun with a shorter barrel.

Any metric caliber is more deadly than any fractional caliber. I.e. Calling a .380 a 9mm Kurtz somehow makes it deadlier.

"A .25 auto isn't very effective till you get 'out there' a ways. You need to give the bullet a chance to pick up some speed." (Yes, I was actually told that once).

"High powered assault rifles". (the .223 isn't legal for deer in many states)

"Cop Killer bullets"

'Safety' ammunition. If ammunition was truly 'safe', it would be worthless.

"Sporting arms". (Just what is a 'sporting arm'? As opposed to what? I haven't even figured out what the term 'sporting' means yet)

Bill.

"The best thing about those Nagants was they could pick up our ammo and shoot it in their guns because they use a slightly larger bullet, but we couldn't use theirs!"

"I'm not looking to take anyone's guns away." Obama and Clinton

"The features mentioned in the assault weapons ban allow for easy rapid fire shooting." (Really? Bayonet lugs?) See also "...shooting from the hip, which allows for more kills." See also "Hollowpoint ammunition ensures perfect kills."

A person with military/law enforcement experience is automatically more knowledgable about firearms than anyone else in the room.

Just a few off the top of my head.

The Second Amendment is only about being able to bag a duck or deer and deterring hoodlums and sickos.

The mysterious "bullet rise" is one that most people just can't get beyond. I've quit trying to even correct them.

.45 Colt brass is "weaker" than other kinds of brass.

Lead bullets are for plinking and goofing off; jacketed bullets are necessary for serious work.

Holsters which expose the trigger are dangerous.

I know for a fact that there are people on this board who believe all of these.

here are a few myths that I fell into before I got into guns seriously:

-all assault weapons are machine guns; all machine guns are assault weapons, and you could buy them at any gun shop
-assault weapons should be banned because they are crime guns
-gun laws are not taken seriously enough (this one can be debatable, but I've had somewhat a change of perspective on that front)
-we don't have enough gun laws
-you could easily and legally acquire a silencer for a handgun
-streetsweepers/striker-protecta shotguns were treated as normal shotguns
-not that many people owned guns

thank God I got through all of that crap

* Teflon coated bullets are armour piercing;

* .22lr is not enough to kill a man;

* Recoil is caused by gas coming out the barrel (yes, I actually had a discussion about this one).

* Recoil is caused by gas coming out the barrel (yes, I actually had a discussion about this one).

You might want to research that a tad more

A large portion of recoil is caused by the large volume of high pressure gasses escaping the muzzle and pushing the rifle into your shoulder like a rocket.

If this weren't true muzzle brakes wouldn't work at all as all they do is redirect this high pressure stream in another direction

There are really 2 recoil events when a rifle is fired. The acceleration of the bullet down the bbl apoun firing and the escaping gasses pushing the rifle rearward as the bullet exits the muzzle

he allowed he would never own a .30-06 because when fired the bullet never quit rising

People claiming that they saw someone get knocked backwards by a .45ACP.

Recoil starting after the bullet leaves the barrel.

What the world needs is a Physics Nazi. "No gun for you!"

This guy is no dummy, he owns his own business, a successful business I might add, but he's a little dense on ballistics.

Some successful people I've met had some simply amazing gaps in their understanding.

During a conversation with a friend the subject of the .30-06 cartridge came up, he allowed he would never own a .30-06 because when fired the bullet never quit rising.

That would require a muzzle velocity of 36,700 fps. I imagine recoil would be impressive.

A former co-worker told me that someone can reach for and disassemble a Glock pistol, in my hands, while I am holding it. :scrutiny:

This may have come from a movie scene in which someone did that, but that gun wasn't even a Glock, but a Beretta. Movie scenes, by their very nature, are contrived, scripted and choreographed. It is also possible for someone to grab the slide and push it back out of battery, which would keep the gun from firing, but not disassemble it.

Forgot one . . . "Gun Free" zones will prevent shooting incidents.

Indeed! Even the notion that any zone is truly gun free just because "they" have declared it so is a bit silly...or arrogant...or both.

And it's been covered, by the way.

That would require a muzzle velocity of 36,700 fps. I imagine recoil would be impressive.

Yeah, buddy!

- Exit wounds the size of a fist.
I have actually seen that one with my own eyes. The weapon was a .41 magnum revolver, and I have absolutely no idea of what kind of bullet was involved, but there was a pretty near fist sized exit hole, a missing right kidney which should have been located approximately where the hole was, and the guy was dead, dead, deadski. The entrance wound was in front, above his diaphragm, and to the left of his sternum.

Maybe for you. About a zillion other people get along just fine with them

You're trying to equate the lack of an accident at this point in time with the same chance of an accident any time. That is a fallacy. There are drunk drivers who manage to get home without causing an accident, or motorcyclists who ride with no helmet or scrape resistant clothing. But that doesn't mean the whole practice of driving drunk or riding with no helmet is as safe as being sober or having a helmet.

Safety is about the chances of something bad happening. And holsters that expose the trigger have a greater chance of something bad happening.
