“They found Eric in the garage with a gunshot wound to the head -- he was obviously deceased -- and a very distraught wife. He was trying to teach her to become acquainted with it and how to shoot."

Sad story…

http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=7326252&page=1

The part that doesn't make sense to me is, why was the gun loaded in the first place?

Also, it looks like alcohol may have been involved...

"Let me teach you firearms safety, honey. First thing, point the gun at my head..."

:uhoh:

Was this some sort of "suicide by naive wife"?

He was military. He had to know that you can't unload an automatic weapon by simply removing the magazine.

Interesting point actually... the Army uses the Beretta 92 pistol, right? Does it have a magazine disconnect saftey? If so, maybe he assumed the Glock would have the same feature?

I also find it interesting that the article quotes Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. My favorite was the "guns are a like a bomb" thing. Yeah, it was just waiting to go off, it has nothing to do with the fact that his wift pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger...

I brought up that story to my spouse last night. I told her that I will have our instructor teach her how to use my handgun at the range. I will not be teaching her how to inside our home. That teaching will be additional income for instructor on my dime.

Why? She wont hear half the stuff I say, but she will learn perfectly the first time from a good instructor.

Once the wife recieves instruction and proves to both of us in our presence that she understands the weapon and shoots/safe with it overall.. then I will allow her to shoot it in my home.

Until then it's just the taser for her and the Mossberg 500.

She will learn to shoot handguns again soon. But I wont take the chance at home.

Our prayers are with the families of the lost. But it will not be in vain if it serves as a reminder to do learning right and maybe save our family from this as well.

Tragic story, obviously.

Didn't someone say that alcohol and guns don't mix? Well they did and they were right.

then I will allow her to shoot it in my home.

Cool. She gonna shoot the TV or the microwave first? :)

ABC isn't even pretending to be objective anymore. Why quote a Brady Campaign spokesperson on an tragedy that appears to be the result of poor firearm safety? I'll bet dollars to donuts that the spokesperson has never even handled a firearm. Yet that's who ABC approaches for a quote?

I've had a newbie pick up one of my guns, point it at someone and touch the trigger while laughing and saying "bang". I'm not saying that's what happened here, but I assume any person will handle guns in the worst possible way until they prove otherwise.

There are also a number of so-called experts on Youtube who, while giving instructional videos, have zero trigger finger control. I took the time to explain the problem to one guy. He deleted all comments complaining about his lack of trigger finger control. He responded that the gun was unloaded so no need to worry.

Unfortunately, many people have to learn the hard way. I hope I never have to learn proper gun handling the hard way.

A sad outcome, and so easily avoidable. I use action proving dummies when showing a new shooter how to use a gun, and for myself when getting familiar with a new gun. New shooters can load and unload to their hearts content, and I can point out that they have their finger in the trigger guard when they should not, without any risk.

"In terms of people handing other people firearms in a casual way and talking about the firearms, it happens a lot," he said.

"These things are extraordinarily dangerous," Hamm said. "You've got to treat a firearm like a bomb that could go off at any moment."

Tragic outcome, but I agree something doesn't add up. :scrutiny: As for ABC News, this is silly! "It happens a lot"? Yeah, right! Could go off at any time, huh? Not if you don't pull the trigger!:banghead:

This story does sound strange. Though I don't watch the All Barack Channel anymore.

They get no ratings from me.

:)

Funny, that's what I was thinking about his ignorant mouth.

I agree, it doesn't sound right. Although anything could've happened from him essentially being "ambushed" by his wife (for whatever reason), to an ND, to a suicide (that the wife is covering up). In any case, it is sad.

What a damn shame. Everytime I show someone how to use one of my guns there is never any live ammo present, always dummy rounds and they sure as hell are not pointing it at me let alone my head. Why risk it?

by the way nice 'journalism' abc

First thing I learned when it came to firearms was trigger control. I never put my finger on the trigger unless I am ready to fire.

I stood over my spouse in the two man lane slapping her hand every time she touched the trigger when gun was not in a ready to fire position.

On the third visit I have not had to touch her at all and boy she shoots that shotgun better than I do.

Now you know why I hire instructor to teach her how to shoot semi auto proper.

This is not accidental at all. The wife undoubtedly killed her husband not only for his military life insurance, but for what ever hidden life insurance policies she had on him. Its far to common for a spouse to kill the other spouse to get life insurance money.

Bezoar, You sir, I hope yer wrong.

What a awful thing to say. Besides if I understand policy, murder and suicide dont pay.

I was in the Army and qualified with an M-14, M-9 Bazoka and M-60 machine gun. I also fired the M-1 and M-16 but not once did I handle a handgun.
