going down a staircase

I've had this discussion on another forum where LEO and Military talk (in general) on clearing rooms. It seems to be more important on layout of house than technique. There are fundamentals though and they are talked about above. I have had to go up more than down and I still think down is easier. It is not the same as a door way you are not outlined in a stairwell. Safest bet is to have two safe rooms if you have family up and down. Wait for the cops. If you must go up or down stealth and observation is the key. Don't run up or down the steps that will be fatal if someone is in there with a firearm.

No one knows the layout of your home better than you. I can walk through mine in total darkness. Stay low, be quiet, listen, and utilize the vampire lighting in your house and study outlines completely.

I would throw the largest dresser down the stairs with as much stuff in and on it as possible. As soon as the dresser reached the bottom step, I would start after it.

I mean, you would have to expect a pretty crazy person to throw a dresser full of clothes and stuff down a flight of stairs for no reason. While your bugler is contemplating this is when I would catch him off guard.

I don't know how practical that would be. Aren't we talking about there maybe someone down there? One call out would tell you all you need know. No answer, still noise time, to go to the safe room. If I had people down stairs I would tell them to shut and lock, wait for the cops. If you must go down you have several concerns. Their in one room with a hostage. They are molesting your children, or the are waiting to wallah you as you come down the stairs. All bad even for pro's.

You think I'm kidding? I know, it sounds some what comical but if it's all you got and you need to get down stairs, can you suggest something more creative?

Keep in mind, this is under the pretense that I absolutely have to go down the stairs and all I have is my gun and whatever is upstairs to help me out.

Don't doubt you, I would just do it different. By tossing something down the steps you are assuming someone is aware upstairs that some one is downstairs and someone downstairs is aware someone is downstairs. That's not how this work is done brother its stealth. But if spotted then speed or distsactant as your are saying is all you got. I did this for a living for awhile. All I'm saying on any thread is what I would do or what I would try its not always the right way and is not the only way. One of the mods tried to explain this just recently. Hope were kosher on this ,not looking for any trouble.

Actually, Deer Hunter, I agree with your way of thinking.

I actually had a long reply posted, but I must have done something wrong, because it only posted the first part of it, so I put in the scrutiny.

Basically, I said that I agreed with you and would toss two Soccer balls down the stars to try to draw a shot or other reaction and then estimate the location of the hostile and fire. Bullets will go through most sheet rock, you have a good chance of hitting him and running him off either way. That of course depends somewhat on the nature of the stairs and geography on the house and layout.

;)

All the talk of flashbangs got me thinking.

I have a pretty healthy stash from years back of firecrackers (think M-80, but smaller) that you pull a string, then toss it. No exposed fuse. I'd think something like this would work in a pinch.

I'm not advocating this method, just thinking out loud...
