Why do i want this gun?!

I have allways liked the look and function of the full length guard and prefer a full length quad rail than a shorter one.

An 8.2 pound 16" carbine! Looks nice, but it's gonna be a heavy little PIG.

LOL, I hear man, I picked up my Classic 16 today. Can't explain what I like about it, I just do. lol.

I like it a lot myself, always have liked Dissipator rifles.

I am not sure what it is about the combination of a 16 inch barrel and full length hand guard that I find appealing, but I most definitely do!!!! I have wanted one for some time... Maybe it is the longer sight radius. I honestly do not know...

ANYHOW, I put one on order today, should be getting it next week... I cannot wait... Getting it at a decent price too, so I guess i will be a happy camper next week.

Here is mine (not a great pict, but the D.I.V.O.R.C.E. took my good camera)--its another option..18" barrel-- full length gas system, and full sight radius...the length is not much more, and you arent hampered by a carbine length gas system..IMHO..

The weight balance of a dissy just feels good....and a longer sight radius doesn't hurt either (although i haven't noticed any huge improvement on accuracy!)

Mine has since been shot out and rebuilt into a standard A2 rifle.
This little rifle made me actually like the M16/AR15 format after six less than encouraging years using and fixing M16A1 rifles in the Army.

How heavy is the barrel?

If it's a HABR it's going to be very nose heavy.

Congrats on your new acquisition! I just recieved my new DPMS and am thrilled. It's definatly a shooter. A lot different from yours but it's what floats my boat. The point is if yours meets your epectations as well as mine did you're gonna be a very happy camper. Let us know how she shoots.

Weight is dependent on a lot more than handguard length. Most quad rails come within ounces of the issue guards in each length, and can weigh more. It's the barrel profile, accessories, and A1 upper with GI FSB that contribute the most to rifle weight.

A lot of dissappators are being built on midlength barrels now. It's the optimum set up, as the gas hole is drilled to position it the proper distance from the muzzle, not the chamber. Most get that backwards.

The AR15 weight calculator on TOS can tell pretty close what a finished carbine will weigh, and a lot of loaded down M4geries will go 10.5 pounds easy. I've estimated my build at 8.25 pounds, and that's a whole bunch better than a HK91 when hunting all day on foot.

Some of the internet HSLD commandos put them in ill repute, but they have a purpose beyond the looks. Three gun shooters have gone to long rails for better hand placement and barrel control, they aren't grabbing the hot barrel on their guns for a reason. It works the same for hunting when it's carried in the car and on foot a lot. It protects the user from the barrel and gives more control.

I got one for the longer sight radius since I can now use iron sights again after having Lasik. I don't think it'd be so great if you wanted an optic unless you also want a bayonet on a 16" rifle

I enjoy shooting it, although I still do better with red dots or optics.

I always liked the standard hanguard on an AR, this aluminum quadrail fad is just sillyness.

There is nothing wrong with a full length AR. Hell, my unit still uses M16A2s for rifle qual, and I shoot expert everytime.

The 16" HBAR with a full stock is very well balanced. The full-length (20") ones are front heavy!

I know how you feel PT, I have bought TWO Dissipator uppers in the past coupla months. Both Bushmaster flatops: one an HBAR with scout rail and BUIS while the other is a customized essentially M-4 profile-barreled one with carry handle -- the latter would be better telestock balanced. Besides protection and sight radius the full-length handguard lets you shoot well in prone. The gas-blocks are where they belong -- they are set up as 16" carbines.

So, why am I hankering for a middy? Slightly longer sight radius and handguards, less gas erosion and dust some say, takes a bayo... I dunno. Best of all worlds?

I have been noticing that more and more people are going with the longer handguards.

It does look neat though. I'm more of a carbine length guy myself.

That's my take. The midlength carbines are the best combination of handiness and performance, IMO. Slightly higher velocity and smoother cycling than a carbine, but noticeably lighter and shorter than a rifle. The dissipator doesn't really seem to offer any advantage over a middy (esp. if optical sights are used), and looks a bit funny. I like to see the correct amount of barrel protruding from the handgaurds and FSB. That means 14.5" on a carbine, 16" on a middy and 20" on full handguards.

I opted for an Armalite M15A2 middy

Don't blame ya. I love my DPMS Classic 16, thing is a joy to shoot. I had a LOT of fun running rounds through it. One thing that is a PITA is getting the hand guards off for cleaning. That ring does NOT want to come down.
