Any New Yorkers out there?

I grew up in Rochester. I now live in Texas. I like big city life, but I also like my guns. If NYS went shall issue and allowed silencers, I'd be up there in a heartbeat. I think they'll get there eventually, but it'll take both a culture and legal change to get them there.

Well, using the old "frog in a pot of water" analogy, I still remember when the water was at room temperature.

Unfortunately, Colorado has been a "targeted state" for the libcoms to mold to their view of the population being nothing more than a nicely-regimented ant colony, so I can see the temperature rising. If I recall correctly, our last real triumph in terms of gun rights was the shall isuue CC law, and that took five or six sessions of the legislature to get passed and signed. Then Denver insisted that since it was founded before Colorado became a state, it had the right to limit open carry despite the Colorado Constitution. The judge in that case agreed, and now there's no OC in Denver, though CC with a permit is OK.

You are in trouble. I had a carry in NYC for 22 yrs. I had to go to the nassau county range, or the glen Cove gun club, "my uncle was treasurer" in Glen Head LI. Other than that there was nothing. Range downtown is too much of a hassle and too expensive. Move I did, for that reason, sold 2 apts, a business, and a summer home, moved to FL, never went back.

It'll be a looooong time before we ever see shall issue and silencers here... especially if we still have legislators from down state regulating what we can and can't do. It was a big deal just get rifle hunting allowed in the area.

It will never happen there, they are so biased you would need an entire generation to pass away before you ever got any legislation like that to pass. People are not geared to embrace firearms. They find carrying a gun distasteful. Leo's also, other than guys you knew, would not appreciate civilians, "any civilians" carrying. Just look at the Mayor.

You Know What They Say About NY and NYC..!..?

New York (and especially New York City) is a good place to be from.

As far from as you can get! :D

I had a carry there because of 5 business I owned, It took a year of nonsense to get, Have written on the subject before. Go to the Nassau county range if you can get a target. Pm me if you have questions, they aren't into guns in the city of NY. Other than hunters, fewer than when I grew up there, you still need a rifle/ shotgun permit

It's a very nice facility... the guys at my regular range (mid-Westchester) praise how nicely it's been reworked (it's actually been around for decades), but....

No firing offhand - bench only.
In rifles, only one round at a time - I don't mean slow fire... I mean only round in the magazine, whether detachable or internal. Wanna bring a Garand? Sure, no problem - just pop it in the ol' tube, and increase by 8x your chances of getting "M1 thumb."

If you have anything that looks like it's prohibited in NYS (our lovely AWB never sunset), you'll be questioned about it, and possibly arrested on the spot if you can't prove it's preban or if the LEO still think it's fishy.
They'll record your driver's license number if you're firing a centerfire rifle, and take your pistol permit# if you're shooting a handgun.

My range is closer (Ardsley/Scarsdale area), but for noise control reasons doesn't allow anything heavier than pistol caliber, or .30 carbine. But it's very laid back and friendly - and closer to NYC.

I'll make you the same offer I made to the OP... PM me if you'd like to know more...
To be fair - and I live 10 minutes from there so may not be unbiased - they are -state- run and open to the public. I'm a firm believer in 2A rights, but a few trips there have made me wonder if licensing and training requirements aren't such a bad idea. Which is also partly why the ROs are all over you if they never saw you before.

The one at a time deal does suck though.

I had wanted to get involved with firearms for years when living in NYC, but the hassles and societal pressure kept me from it, until we moved to SW FL. Just by getting firearms and a CCW, I felt trusted and respected by the state in a way I never did up north.

I'm not a New Yorker, but my wife lived there for 11 or 12 years, mostly in Brooklyn. She just got out of an apartment in Park Slope actually.

I like to visit when I have the opportunity.

The city presents itself as a center of creativity and independent thought. It is everything but. Group think, adherence to political correctness and love of all things government are what runs the city. Corruption is rampant. You will have no trouble enjoying the shooting sports if you are politically connected. The average citizen is very afraid. Afraid to be an individual. They won't talk like one and they've largely stopped thinking like one. It really is a sad place. And yes, I'm a NYer. I speak from experience. You have to hang on to your freedoms. The last thing you want to do is let your home become a land of serfs. This is a very ugly city. People with their heads bowed are not pretty.

blue mountain rifle range is NYS owned and it is near Indian Point nuclear power plant - see Internet for information. In addition, you can find a good rifle range out on long island near the fork.

Blue mountain gun range makes you write your name, address, time, date, gun to be fired, range to be used, license number, ect. The police collect this information and run it through their computers to find any violations that may result in a felony or other serious gun related charge. over the years, many people have been proscuted using this information.

westchester ny has a trigger lock law and I assume nyc does too.
