I moved from Virginia to New York City about two years ago and I was wondering how many of you like me live on this Gun-less island. Since I moved here I haven't met many people who I can talk guns with. And forget about going shooting here. The Ranges in the city its self are incredibly expensive and not worth it. Would be nice to know there are others like me suffering out there.

You are not alone, there are others out there in New York City, I been reading the adventures of gun ownership in the city (and the state) at http://www.nyfirearms.com/forums/ .

It seems every conceivable question there is from ranges, to pistol permits and long guns are on that site. There is even a map that shows which counties upstate issue carry permits.

I believe there are others from Gotham City here on THR. But I figure I'd mention that site until someone from your area replies.

I live in NY, but thankfully not the sh I mean city. As the home of political correctness and liberal insanity, even the people who agree with you won't come out and admit it. Media is controlled by controlled thought people, and the only people with guns are the police and criminals. That seems to be the way the patronizing government wants it. Much of the city is made up of illegal immigrants, so they have no concept of freedom or what they are missing. Did you not look into this before you decided to live there?

I lived in Queens until 2008 when I moved to the Pocono Mountains.

I went through the process for a shotgun and would go out East to Calverton Shooting range and shoot skeet all day long. My brother lives in Nassau County so he has a bunch of rifles, shotguns and handguns. It was enough to hold me over till my move when I could grow my own collection.

I lived in Manhattan for the past 10 years and I know exactly how you feel. The only bud I had to talk guns with was one NYPD auxiliary officer. I survived by getting upstate to a place we had in the catskills a few times a month where I had my bow, rifles and shotguns.

I actually went through the process to get a permit to keep a shotgun/rifle at my place in NYC and kept an 870 and Marlin 1894 there and would shoot out on long island. Went to the west side shooting range once and never went back - what a crock.

I applied for a CC permit in Ulster county where we had our other place, but before the permit was issued (9 months without a single word!!!!) we relocated to Scottsdale, AZ this past November... Still have not received word on my permit, haha.

Going from NYC to AZ in regards to firearms was like dying an going to heaven - the day I flew in, I went to the DMV then 2 hours later had my first handgun - one week later I had 3 more.

Anyway, hang in their bro and get our ass out of there if you can!!!

There's a range near Scarsdale, NY that's pretty good - I'm a member and we'd be happy to let you shoot as a guest. It's only a 30 - 45 min train or car ride out of the Grand Central. PM me for more info, if you're interested.

I was born in Brooklyn N.Y, in 1952...moved to Manhattan when I was 19 and lived there in the village until I was 26...lived in Staten Island for about 2 years somewhere in there... Moved to Los angeles in 1979 ...Moved to Oklahoma City in 1994...Here is where I got interested in firearms...Everyone here owns them...Been here since...

I'm from Long Island originally, and I gre up shooting. I live part of the year in FL and part here in Tidewater- I'll be back in NYC for the summer (part out in the Hamptons).

First off, go to

http://www.longislandfirearms.com/

and Join the forums- you'll find a healthy community of Firearms enthusiasts, including many from NYC.

I'll be up the Hudson a bit, in Ossining for a few weeks, and I'm looking forward to checking out this range while I'm there:

http://parks.westchestergov.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1899&Itemid=4554

it's about an hour north of the city, but it looks like a fine facility.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

1 of the reasons I left

Was born in da Bronx [ still a die hard Yank's fan ].

Moved all over the chitty till I was 25,then moved to Western NY.

Got a CCW and became a guard on an armored car.

Then took the LEO test and became one for 26 years.

Still shoot lots and CCW always on the permit that is easy to obtain.

My advise is ,if you like to shoot - MOVE.

It's a very nice facility... the guys at my regular range (mid-Westchester) praise how nicely it's been reworked (it's actually been around for decades), but....

No firing offhand - bench only.
In rifles, only one round at a time - I don't mean slow fire... I mean only round in the magazine, whether detachable or internal. Wanna bring a Garand? Sure, no problem - just pop it in the ol' tube, and increase by 8x your chances of getting "M1 thumb."

If you have anything that looks like it's prohibited in NYS (our lovely AWB never sunset), you'll be questioned about it, and possibly arrested on the spot if you can't prove it's preban or if the LEO still think it's fishy.
They'll record your driver's license number if you're firing a centerfire rifle, and take your pistol permit# if you're shooting a handgun.

My range is closer (Ardsley/Scarsdale area), but for noise control reasons doesn't allow anything heavier than pistol caliber, or .30 carbine. But it's very laid back and friendly - and closer to NYC.

I'll make you the same offer I made to the OP... PM me if you'd like to know more...

Really?!?

I didn't think anyone was actively enforcing it at ranges. All my ARs are NYS AWB compliant, but that's still worrisome.

And I hate 'tube' ranges, even if I am just doing benchwork.

I might end up trucking north to my brothers patch in Orange County (which has a great range, but involves hiking in, so it it's a days trip).

PM outbound.

If it makes you feel any better (and it should), I shoot with two DEC officers and two NY Staties. They never even blinked when I pulled out several 20 and 30 round magazines at the range.

Locale may make the difference, though. I have a place to shoot that is a ten minute walk from my house.

Lived here all my life, I shoot at west side. Lots of great nice people there. Expensive? Sure it's new York city. Did you expect anything to be cheap here? Pony up some cash and join a range or suffer by your lonesome. Think of it as joining a social club that you can shoot at. It's the only place you'll meet fellow gunnies.

That's more in line with my experiences out on Long Island. I was really under the impression that it only seemed to be enforced when adding on to other charges (the Nassau DAs recent back-firing sting operation on our LGS being a notable exception).

I never shot at a range in NYC so that may be why I never had a problem when shooting my brothers rifles. We shot at the Mitchell Complex by Nassau Coliseum and Calverton in Suffolk County.

We routinely shot his AR, AK and M1A with 20 and 30 round magazines. Never a negative word was said except for the old lady at Calverton who would have to occasionally yell to "slow your fire Rambo".

I was born and raised in NYC. Left it for good. Miss it once in a while but not for gun ownership. Suprised by the openess about gun ownership in the south. It was not something you could talk about at work back east. Very few places to prchase let alone shoot. You have to leave the city to purchase and I didn't know of any ranges unless they catered to LE. NJ does have a few indoor ranges not far from the city but mass transit won't get you there in a decent amout of time. Off subject but you do need a car if you live in NYC now.

Was in NYC last weekend.

I love visiting, could not imagine living there. I need a tree out my window. Good luck getting that in Manhattan...

I visited a friend whose brother told me that he kept his guns upstate and only got to go shooting when out of the city. I figure it can only get better.

At my local range (mid-Westchester), police and non-LEO shoot together all the time, and no one is questioned about anything.
However, I hear this conversation fairly often there:
"Hey, nice 10/22"
"Thanks!"
"I hope those mags are preban"
"I'm not saying they are, or aren't, LOL"
"OK, well don't bring them to Blue Mountain, if there's a cop on the firing line, you'll probably get questioned about it." Blue Mountain is a public range in northern Westchester.

Went canoeing on an absolutely pristine stretch of the Delaware last week; then shot a few boxes of 9mm and .22 in my backyard range; then went into The Big Apple to see Nice Work if You Can Get It. I live in Orange County, New York, a 1-1/2 drive from midtown Manhattan, and life is good. Sure, the 10-round magazine restriction bugs me, and sure, it irritates me that I have to apply for a pistol permit every time I purchase a handgun, but that's just how it is for now. In Orange County, just 50 miles NW of Manhattan, we can still hunt whitetail with a rifle or handgun. No doubt that will change in time.

Gun "rights" vary widely from county to county in New York just as they do from state to state. To the OP, you might consider taking the train to Monroe, NY, in Orange County, and paying a visit to Master Class Shooters Supply and Range, or Davis in Goshen. Get off at the Middletown station and you can walk across the street to Gander Mountain.

Over thirteen million people call NYC their home. They've got to be onto something. :)

LOL,your correct and I was born there and still love to visit.

BUT also LOVE to leave as its no place to live.

Unless you like living in a roach motel that costs a TON of money to get anything or go anywhere.

Wife and I go to a Yanks game once in a while, then LEAVE.

Miss the food and the culture, but not the crowds and the attitude.

I'm a solid 6 hr drive west of the city yet somehow they still have influence over what I can own. NY state is better then NYC in terms of firearm ownership but it's still horrible.

The only people with firearms in NYC are politician bodyguards, Cops, people with $$$, and the criminals that don't care about the gun laws.

There's a nice range in Ossining.

The machine gun range on the south side of Sing Sing!

Upstaters will always be held hostage to the whims of the
NYC politicos due to the huge population of the city in
comparison to the rest of the state.
The Hillary episode is a prime example of Ultra liberal
politics. Carpetbagger from the south elected by the city
folk.

The Yankees, the Giants, the theater, the pizza and some
relatives are the only reasons to go south of West
Point.

Oft told, told again:

Lived in Brooklyn, moved out of NYC in early sixties to Colorado. I didn't realize what Freedom really was until I got out here and breathed free air.

Three months later, after I became a resident with a CO DL, I walked into a department store, picked out my first handgun, proved up on my residency, paid my money, walked out of the store with it. No muss, no fuss, no 4473.

Even today, even in Arizona, even in Vermont, even in Alaska, yes, even in Colorado, you guys don't know what freedom used to be like.

I'll never part with that first gun, even though it was just a rinky-dinky RG-22 in cal .22 short.

It reminds me of what freedom was, once.
