There's a ton in the mix. Springfield XD or XDm in .40, there's a compact model that's going to be a tad bigger, a tad heavier, and carry an extra round or two.

SW Shield is going to be smaller, it's single stack and it holds less rounds. It's not really in the same category as the rest on the list IMHO. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying it's a different category. I'd add S&W M&P 40C to the list, roughly comparable to the Glock 27 but with more ambidextrous features and an accessory rail. I really like the M&P slide serrations.

Ruger SR pistols would have to be loved by Sir Mix-a-Lot, because they have big butts. The SR pistols have a manual safety (the Shield also comes with one, M&P compact has the option of coming with or without one), so whether you want the safety or not is up to you.

Glock 26/27 are pretty much the standard for the sub-compact double-stack pistols, but I believe the M&PC is an upgrade in almost every way...the only issue I have with M&Ps is the trigger, but you could get an APEX trigger to replace it.

Glock 27 for me and with Lone Wolf 40-9 conversion barrel, I get to practice with cheaper 9mm loads. With Pearce +1 mag base extension, more comfortable 3-finger grip and 10+1 capacity with full-size G22 mags as spares.

I would say G27 or M&P40c. If you want exotic wonder then second-hand S&W 4040. The Sc frame and ball bearing in the magazine are simply precious.

I too have seen "the light" and bought G29sf. Kool-Aid, OH YEH!

Anyone looking for a concealable .40S&W would be wise to take a look at a Walther PPS.

Might as well toss the XD/XDM series into the mix. I preferred my XD 40 subcompact over the G27.

I would have to disagree. Almost every used PPS I looked at was .40 that has to be significant finding. The 9x19 version must be well loved as second hand samples are rarely seen.

Not really sure what this means. Unlike many popular handguns, the PPS was designed from the start for the .40S&W cartridge.

That said, I too prefer the 9mm chambering, but I prefer 9mm to .40 anyway. ;)

Glock 23

If you can carry the the 27, you can carry the 23 almost as easily. The 23 gives you 14 rounds as opposed to 10 in the 27. I used to carry one daily until I switched to a 1911. The Glock 23 weighs a full pound less than a government model 1911 and has 5 more rounds of capacity. The only reasons that I switched to the 1911 are that I like them better and I have a great holster them. I will be buying a VM-2 and a shoulder holster for the glocks soon, so I may well switch back. :D

One of the nice things with having a compact gun in one of the PFSF line-ups, such as the G27, M&P compact, or XDm compact, is that there are often grip sleeves available for longer magazines. So while it will always have the shorter barrel (good for concealment and draw, bad for accuracy, but more than accurate enough at expected SD distances), you have the option of the short grip or the higher capacity.

With the larger sizes (G22/23, M&P, XDm 4.5) you have the longer barrel, and you have the higher capacity innately, but you cannot shorten the grip. That's why I like my XDm compact - I can choose to carry 11 or 16 in it. With the XDm full size, I can only carry 16, and that extra grip portion might do some printing.

When I am at the range, I regularly practice shooting G27 with the longer G22 magazines that are my spares.

With a bit of practice, I now shoot with equal ease regardless of the magazine. As with my other CCW pistols, I practice drawing from holster and changing magazines while watching TV so I could perform these tasks automatically without looking (be sure to empty the magazines and clear your pistol first ;)).

Kahr PM40.

My EDC. It's the smallest lightest 40 S&W semi-auto out there. It kicks much less than the J-frames I used to carry, is a much better shooter, and fits in the same pocket. It handles surprisingly well for such a little gun shooting the .40 S&W and it's very accurate. The magazines are so small that carrying two spares in the back pocket isn't noticable.

It's the smallest gun with the lowest capacity but it fits my carry needs perfectly.

Glock 22, 23, Walther PPS, M&P 40, Sig250, and Sig 229 are my choices in CCW in .40S&W.

Heck, I've been carrying a S&W M&P40c in a tuckable IWB kydex/leather holster since October and haven't looked back.

Though I usually carry Federal XM40HC (180gr HST), I do sometimes carry Winchester RA357SIGT (Ranger Talons) when I have my Storm Lake .357sig barrel installed just to mix things up.

If I can carry the M&P40c comfortably, I can imagine the Shield will by a joy to carry.

Re: post #11

Revolvers. They're bigger than you think!

I was enamored with my G27 for months. Until I ran into problems. Now I leave the LW conversion barrel in all the time. Cuz it's more reliable in 9mm, period. The recoil spring is barely strong enough for 40SW to begin with. I'd really be careful about practicing with 9mm and carrying 40. That's a good way to find out your spring is shot at the moment you need it.

GLOOB, +1 on regular recoil spring assembly replacement on Glocks.

When people complain about 40 caliber Glocks being snappy with factory loads, I ask them if they ever replaced the recoil spring assembly (typical answer is never ).

I have spares in my range bag and when I pop in a new one, they are amazed that suddenly the recoil is softer. ;)

They are cheap enough ($8 for G22 $17 for G27) and perhaps you can use old one for 9mm practice and pop in the new one after the range session with the factory 40 barrel?

been carrying and training with a G27 for 4 years. Great piece. If you're into shoulder rigs, spend the money and get the galco. I've got over 1,000 days on one and it's still like new

Tubby;

I made the decision a loong time ago, back when dinosaurs ruled the category. I've been carrying my H&K USPc in .40 since I got it about 15 or more years ago. At that time, it was one of the very few left-hand-friendly carry guns you could get.

I'm not a particularly big man, but it's been in a Milt Sparks Exec's Companion IWB holster all this time & I've not been "made" any too often either. The operation has been flawless, & regardless of other opinions expressed on site, H&K has also been flawless in their support of the gun. I had the ambi operating lever installed by them when it first came out. The work was done quickly, at the price quoted, and the turn-around was short.

It's my understanding that there are now several newer models of H&K carry guns out that are lighter, far more concealable, and can be modified to fit most anybody's hand. And yeah, they cost a bit more, but mine's got a track record that I'm perfectly comfortable with.
