So I get this SPAM from one of the better known Internet retailers. I only listed 10, but what really surprised me was that the AK variant was #3. That many folks are buying AK's? For what? Are all those peeps worried that they'll be banned or our society is gonna go down the toilet?

I'm surprise that it beat out the AR and good old high cap 9mm pistols, BTW.

Yeah, I guess that's true, but why wouldn't a M&P or Glock beat out the AK? I'm just a little surprised that pistols didn't beat out the AK. Granted, it is only one online retailer...

Ruger is said to have produced over 1,000,000 firearms by the end of August, this year. I'm inclined to believe it.

Bear in mind, this is specific types, as opposed to categories. 'polymer 9mm semiautomatic pistols' would probably be a top category.

How many pistols did Glock produce? There were more Glock 19s and 17s sold this year than any Ruger pistol, I can almost guarantee it.

I am guessing this is from buds? If so those are all guns that they have had specials on. I also don't think that they have sold more "Mossberg 500 Cruisers" than Remington 870s.

The majority of guns are sold to average people who don't frequent gun forums and shop based on price.

Most people that don't visit gun forums still hear about Glocks. You can't watch an episode of cops or a hollywood movie without seeing one. Even if they are more expensive than some of the other guns on that list, I still would put money that they are the best selling semi-automatic pistol for the past few years (if not decade).

just to clear up confusion that could be caused by the title, that is the top guns sold by Bud's, not overall. Bud's best selling point is low prices, so it is no wonder that THEIR top selling guns are typically lower priced ones.

You local gun stores and overall sales would be very different

That is more understandable. As I said, those are all guns that they had some good sales for during the year.

An AR15 is a higher quality rifle (IMO) than AK47 varient. But AK47 is much cheaper... I guess price wins when it comes to volume.

The Nagant Revolver placed 4th on that list?! Are they common in America? Is ammo for it available in most shops? That one kinda surprises me the most...

I see nagant revolvers all over the place arsenal refinished with accessories for $90, it seems most people shoot .32 s&w long, and .32 h&r mag in them. There is still surplus ammo to be found and I know fiocchi makes it. Prvi partizan and sellier and bellot might as well ,but I'm not sure.

Are there a lot of one-gun households in this country? Are most of the guns in one-gun households sub-$400 guns? Do a lot of one-gun shoppers come across Buds when they search the Web?

Based on that list, seems maybe so.

A seemingly endless supply has been coming in as surplus for several years now. They're dirt cheap and while clunky, are reliable. Given how many people buy guns, shoot a box or two of ammo through them, and then never touch them again, it's not surprising that the Nagant is a top seller.

Also, as to ammo - they'll fire .32 S&W Long or .32 H&R Mag in a pinch (cases just bulge a bit). There's also aftermarket cylinders for .32 ACP that can also be reamed out to .32 H&R Mag so that you can use it or .32 S&W L in a more properly fitting chamber.

As to the list itself though, it is surprising just how many of the spots on the list that Ruger has. Filter it down to just handguns and the percentage of Rugers jumps up even higher.

Again, it's from Buds. I have nothing against Buds, I bought a great Rem 700 from them. But you have to factor in their website and the pop-up window that shows their deals of the week or whatever. The Nagant comes up all the time as do their low-end AKs and lots and lots and LOTS of Rugers. This list comes out the way it does because of advertising and is in no way an indicator of what types of guns the majority of people are buying.

If I sold guns through a website and constantly advertised a Daisy air rifle as "our most popular super quiet sniper rifle of all time" in a pop-up window, I would probably sell tons of them too.

Well, I would not have considered myself a Ruger fan, yet 3 of my 5 most recent purchases are Rugers and I'm considering a LCR and an American. Got to give them kudos for accurate marketing.

Sam, that is a good representation of US manufactured guns, but there are several makers that it does not give reliable sales info for because it is just a US manufactured list. Glock and HK in particular. However I could just be missing something, after an ER trip for a kidney stone I'm not as astute as usual (and I'm usually not all that astute)

Well...sort of.

But if you read down to the last page it does go into imports, by country.

Austira imported 431,118 handguns to the US in 2010. (Probably mostly Glock, though not entirely.)

Germany imported 229,172. (Poor H&K...;))

Ruger alone made 665,954 handguns! (Almost 904,000 firearms made by that one company in one year alone!)
Heck S&W beat both Glock and H&K that year with 581,783.
