A question I have seen no one ask. Are manufacturers really at full production? Are they actually making the same number of rounds that they were years ago? Or are they holding back?
I agree with others who say that it's not so much the people that buy up all the ammo when it shows up at the stores, but it's the fact that the ammo never gets to the stores to begin with.
For those of us who are poor, shooting .22's has been the only way to really be able to enjoy the shooting sports in any regular way. Centerfire ammunition is expensive. Some of you might not think so, but it is. After paying for gasoline, the electric bill, food, gasoline, water, and gasoline, there's not much left for ammo. It was always nice to be able to go to the store and pick up a big brick of .22 ammo for very little money, and fire away for a long time and have a blast. Can't do that anymore. Even if you can find it, it ain't cheap now (I can't find it... except for the occasional box of 50 for $9... and I may have to eventually break down and buy a few for future use.. not for casual shooting now!). And not everyone has the time nor the inclination to scour the internet all day, every day, searching for the .22 bargains.
My shooting lately has been limited to slingshots and BB guns. It may have to remain that way, with what ammunition I have saved for serious uses.
At this point, I'm wondering if we will ever see a day where we have inexpensive, available .22 ammunition again!
