Remi 760 in 8mm? Loving the .308!

I'm pretty sure they have the same rim diameter, same bolt face. The problem might come from the .308 being a short action and 8mm Mauser being intermediate or long action. A rifle in .30-06 or .270 could be converted without that problem though. As far as barrels, I wouldn't know where to look but I'm sure one could be found or made if you want it badly enough. Sure would be a fun rifle though.

I'm thinking the 760 is only made in one action length. If so it might be possible. Even if the long action rifle is needed feeding might be an issue. The 8mm is probably too long to work with a 308 magazine. Would probably fit in a 30-06 magazine, but might not feed well.

I do know some have been converted to 338-06 and they were made in 35 Whelen. I'm not sure why you'd want one in 8mm unless you are just sitting on a bunch of ammo.

They do have two 'action lengths', the question I guess is whether the long action is long enough and the '06/35 Whelen/300 Savage bolt face is kosh'.

I'm not the ultimate expert on this subject, but I'd be really surprised if the 8mm is longer than a .30-06. And are you sure the 760 does not shoot .243/.308 and .30-06 from the same length action?

If you started with a .308 or .243 760, you would just need the barrel rebored, and a long action magazine (which may need some tweaking). The bolt face and action length are the same.

Are you talking 8mm Mauser/8x57/7.92x57 or 8mm Magnum? Just to make sure since you only said 8mm. (or 8mm lebel. Or 8mm nambu. But those would just be silly.)

BTW stiab, Yugo surplus 7.92x57 with 196gr bullets is not much shorter than 30-06 M2 Ball and is as long as some of the commercial 30-06 loads I shoot.

The barrel is threaded into a barrel extension that has the locking lugs, similar to an AR-15. The barrel assembly is held to the receiver with a single nut. All you would need to do is send your barrel assembly and bolt head to a smith to do the rebore. Headspace can be set without the barrel mounted to the receiver.

Nobody "makes" an 8x57 barrel for a 760.
One could be made as a custom proposition.
Yes, the installation of a 760 barrel is unique. The barrel is set into an extension that mounts into the receiver. It is not too hard to get the barrel off and on, there was even an old old gunzine article about how to set one up as a takedown with simple tools.
But getting an odd caliber barrel and the extension mated up would be the hard part.
You need advice from a gunsmith with the knowhow AND the willingness to work on the pump.

It might be better to do a rebore and rechamber on an existing barrel.
JES reboring will convert a short action 760 to .358 and a long action version to .35 Whelen. But he does not list 8mm for anything. You could call, he might be willing to add 8mm for an extra tooling charge.
