If you mount a sheet of masonite with screws only, to the top of whatever you put over of the MDF, you have a replaceable benchtop surface.
If your using two sheets of 3/4" ply, glue sandwitching the MFD between the 2 ply sheets would probably make it stronger.

I use lighter fluid (Zippo) which is actually Naptha to remove stickers and glue. Doesn't seem to harm most surfaces including most plastics and removes most glue without leaving any residue. Nice tip too, Guru1911.

The reason that an 1897 might need this done is to accomodate modern shells. Originally the forcing cone was cut short for paper hulls which needed to seal closer than plastic shells do. Pattern adjustment is a more modern approach too.
