At least an SKS with iron sights has a better rifle 'sight distance' than the AKM, if any extra positive characteristic of the SKS were needed by some people.
I tend to agree. If I'm going to spend my Saturday afternoon shooting paper, I would want little cloverleafs. Not bashing you or your rifle, but I just could not get any enjoyment from a rifle that shot like that and I’ll never understand the love people have for com-bloc firearms.
Na. I understand them perfectly. I’ve been on the receiving end of them and I still believe they suck. Com-bloc weapons have always been a bi-product of the poor, socialist countries which developed them. They are crude, cheap and inaccurate compared to their western designed counterparts. I have no love, fear or respect for them. That’s probably because maybe you don’t understand the rifle and what it’s designed to do. Again, i think you misunderstood what those com-bloc have archived with some crude milled/stamp receivers and plywood… we have the SKS, AK, PPS, RPK and many other weapons that i have the upmost respect because they function and have giving the western guns a very good run for their money. Don’t get me wrong, i have a tricked out AR right next to my bed but also have an AK to the left. And i can guarantee you that you will respect, fear or understand the love people have with com-bloc guns the moment you use it to save your life or you are taking fire from one of them….
Different strokes....Not bashing you or your rifle, but I just could not get any enjoyment from a rifle that shot like that and I’ll never understand the love people have for com-bloc firearms.
And that’s why 2/3 of the world uses them…Na. I understand them perfectly. I’ve been on the receiving end of them and I still believe they suck. I can't quite agree with this analogy. There isn't a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge in the same class as the Corolla or the Camry that compares in reliability or performance. If there were, I would own it. I like my Sks because it's like the old Snapper rear engine mowers. Not the best, not the fastest, but cheap, tough, and reliable. And the world’s most advanced countries? What are they using? Again, Com-Bloc weapons are popular because they are cheap. That is all. Like Toyota Carollas. They meet the bare minimum requirements for reliability and performance and they are cheap. That makes them popular.
You are right. A Kia would be a better comparison.I can't quite agree with this analogy. I also sling mine up on the tractor or ATV for back woods activities. I don't care if it gets banged up or dropped in a creek, it still works. I wouldn't dare do that to my Ar15s.
Honestly these days rifle shooting for me is mostly “could I kill a deer or if need be defend myself at x yardage.”daniel craig:
Are you only into achieving tight groups, when possible?
Or does your shooting club etc allow you to hit plastic juice jugs at 30 or 50 yards.?
These have become my only targets - because they are fun.
Fun is its own reward, with no regrets, literally (- regarding types of sport shooting -), if I were to die tomorrow.
I have some brass cased Geco ammo I’m saving for….I’m not sure why lolThe SKS is like most firearms made anywhere in that they can be improved from how they leave the factory. I'm not an SKS owner, but as a long-time fan of the 7.62x39 cartridge I've handled a few in my lifetime. A couple of them were capable of 2 MOA, but it took some work and modification on the part of the owners.
Being able to hit a pie plate with a mediocre performing brand of x39 at 100 yards is a start. There are better ammo choices out there, and they're not necessarily brass case. There's some really good steel case. Golden Tiger made in the Russian Vympel Plant is one of the better performing steel case varieties in my Mini-30. "Wolf" is a trademark of a US importer. Their steel case x39 has been made in different factories over the years to varying degrees of quality. Mostly from Russia, but also Germany. It was at one time made by the Tula Cartridge Plant.
I wish I would have snatched up a Yugo SKS back in the day when they could be had for a song. I've got so much x39 ammo I need more guns chambered for it. When/if things get back to normal I'll likely pick one up. I'd rather have an SKS than an AK/AKM type... unless it's a Finnish Valmet or an early Israeli Galil.
You don't have to "love" a rifle to enjoy shooting it. Can I out-shoot my SKS? Absolutely. I also own much better rifles, and have had the luck to use some of the best precision rifles made. But if I have the choice (esp in this day and age) of shooting my rattle-trap SKS with irons at steel IPSC targets (and considering a hit somewhere on that steel a success) or having a grumpy-cat look on my face because I can't find reloading components or the ammunition needed to really get the most out of my Larue OBR or M24, I'll choose plinking at stuff with the SKS every time. Its much more enjoyable and productive than surfing the net looking for a good deal on ammo. May as well be looking for unicorns. Not bashing you or your rifle, but I just could not get any enjoyment from a rifle that shot like that and I’ll never understand the love people have for com-bloc firearms.

It should be noted that their are two groups of people in this thread; One who thinks thats a good day of shooting, and the others that scoff and think something is wrong with you or your choice of firearm.
We could further surmise that those two groups of people could be equally divided by those who have and shoot their SKS's and those who don't.
Luckily this is America and we have the freedom to mostly do what what we want and enjoy it.
If I shot those groups with my SKS, I'd be happy.
