ok, so I must admit I'm a revolver guy. I do own two autos that I though I had to have in my collection 1911 (obviously) and a FNHP. But I've recently been bitten by the 10MM bug. I know there are several pistols out there for this cartridge but I just wanted to hear any experience or recommendations for one. So fare I’m interested in the Dan Wesson 1911 type, but I already have a 1911 type gun. The other is the WITNESS ELITE STOCK. Let me know what you think. My only other requirement is no plastic, its just one of my peeves.:scrutiny:
Thanks for the Help!

Find yourself a S&W 1006
first round double action
second single action
Place on safe to lower the hammer

Yes I have a couple
1006(Duty), 1066(Winter Carry), 610 3inch, 610 5inch, 610 6.5inch, Contender 10 inch, Contender 16 inch,Glock 29(Summer Carry)

Well, after getting my DW CBOB .45, I am sort of jonesing for a "twin in ten" :p.

I am pretty much sold on the quality of their pistols and the fact that they do not overcharge for their work. I honestly feel like my CBOB is worth more than I paid for it.

That being said, I have noticed on some interweb exchanges that the 10mm's (in pretty much every 1911 brand, including DW) have slightly more teething issues when new than their .45 ACP counterparts. Usually it seems to be an issue in matching the recoil spring up with the ammo, but I suppose one could chalk that up to the huge variation there is in 10mm loadings. Some are not much more potent than .40 S&W, and some are pushing .41 mag territory.
Just my guess.

Jason

I prefer my S&W 1006 over my Witness, but thats just because of the reliability. Even for a double stack, the Witness fits better but they are equal in the accuracy dept., at least in my hands. Ive had jamming issues with my Witness, so until i get that fixed, and im comfortable about it, my 1006 is my backpacking/hunting/hiking/woods defense sidearm.

Im not a Glock fan at all by any means, but i have considered their G29 for winter carry.

And stay away from factory ammo like Winchester, Hornady, and Federal. They only push the same weight bullet ~50fps faster than the 40S&W. If you want true 10mm power, at least reload but look into Double tap and buffalo bore ammo. A true 10mm round will push a bullet ~200fps faster than the 40S&W.

I have heard here and there of some durabilty issues with the 1006 which I find odd, any truth to this? I really would like a pre lock 610 or some sort.

I may start carrying a 10mm as a dual purpose animal/human defense gun while hunting in some areas.

Moonclip: I have heard here and there of some durabilty issues with the 1006 which I find odd, any truth to this?.........

Absolutely NO truth to this. This pistol is built like a tank, and was designed for the full-house 10mm loads. If the 1006 can't handle it, there simply ain't no pistol that can handle it.

As to the OP's question regarding the Witness Elite Stock, I can't directly respond, but I do have an Elite Match, which is a SAO pistol and mine is incredibly accurate.

Sam

I have a Witness Elite Match in 10mm with about 1500 rounds through it. I love the gun. It is a joy to shoot. I would assume the Elite Stock will be similar to better fit, finish and quality.

If you like a 10 mm Auto and you do not want to go the polymer route (I'm the same...I "cannot" buy a Glock 20...the gun works perfectly but I just can't :):) ) your only choice is the 1911 style Kimber and Dan Wesson or an used S&W 1006.

Stay away from the Witness (I had one and I got rid of it)..yes they are accurate (if you do not get a lemon that doesn't jam all the time) but they cannot be considered a real 10 mm Auto because the importer (EAA) states very clearly that you cannot use real full specs 10 mm loads (the likes of Corbon, Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, etc..) otherwise no warranty coverage. They are real anal about it.
Especially since they introduced the new rounded top slide style I heard often of cracked slides when using real 10 mm ammo...even if you put stiffer recoild springs.
The Witness is to be used with the light "FBI load" of the 10 mm (the loads produced by the major ammo manufacturers), basically a ballistic twin of the .40....so why bother?? I stay with the much more economical forty at this point.
On top of that, EAA Customer Service is horrendous...actually better say non existent.

Myself, I'm on the prowl for a good used S&W 1006....

If you decide to go 1911 style again don't forget Fusion, they can build you a 6" longslide. Look to be nice guns that get good reviews, but I have no first hand experience.

oohhh, Fusion forgot about them:what:. I've seen these on GB and wonder about them. Anyone have any experience with them? So fare I'm leaning Dan Wesson. I like that Fusion could make me on in a long slide!

I run double-tap and hot handloads in both of my witness guns without issue. An elite series gun will also likely be very reliable right from the box. My Elite Match finally had two FTF's last range outing, but my wife was shooting and admitted she was trying to improve her grip and my have been a little limp-wrist.

The standard witness series will require a stronger recoil spring, better mag springs (Wolff 22lb recoil and +10% mag) and about 300-500 rounds before it runs great. They also don't like limp-wrists.

My heart goes out to saturno_V. I know he had a very bad experience with his witness 10mm. There are always the occasional faulty products, but it appears EAA's service was bad for him even by their reputation.

I do realistically think you should have different expectations from the Elite line.

I may have considered the Elite series also because for the moment they still retain the original square top slide style (thicker)
But I do not like that they are SA only...correct me if I'm wrong.
In any case the Customer Service is still bad...

so, what about the colt delta elite 10mm autos? #1, do they still make them? #2, were / are they any good? #3, i noticed that now they call it the 10mm auto, instead of the 10mm magnum. what is up with that?

I heard of cracked slides int he long run with the Colt Delta Elite too...

However I do not particularly like the 1911 platform in the first place!

the guy who owns and runs Fusion was the previous president of Dan Wesson. Join any 1911 board and you will see a heap of praise for Fusion guns.

I see SW 1006 guns going for close to $800 and above. Might as well buy a new gun and go for a Kimber or entry level Fusion, just over $1000.

the rare S&W 1XXX series go for ~$800 or $900, but i paid $500 cash for my 1006. It came with 5 extra mags, Hogue grips and only had 300rds through here in the 14 years the LEO had owned it.

$600-$700 will get you a good S&W 10mm. The 1911 platform is nice but its designed for the 45ACP, which is underpowered compared to the 10mm. Not sure if the manufacturers put any consideration into this when the had it chambered in 10mm.

The S&W 1xxx series are the best platform on the market for the 10mm auto. IIRC, the 10mm magnum is a different cartridge. Its a lengthened 10mm Auto and is loaded to pressure levels similar to the .44 Magnum for use in the IAI handguns. Thus, 10mm MAGNUM

i noticed that now they call it the 10mm auto, instead of the 10mm magnum. what is up with that?

Two different rounds.

The one on the left is 10mm mag.

10mmmag.jpg

Only gun that ever chambered it was an extremely rare variant of the AMT Automag IV. I have a bunch of 10mm mag brass, as I intend to one day either custom build a 10 mag, or stretch a 10mm auto gun to accept it.

Thanks for the tip!!

However I do like to look at the gun and having a close examination before to buy so it must be something local for me.

Thanks anyway!!

Three Witness 10mm all steel pistols: A full size, a Compact and an Elite Match. I'm sorta retired and have my own range on my acreage so I shoot and reload constantly. AA9 and Power Pistol are the powders I use and I get 1225fps average with 200gr speer solids and 1600fps with Nosler 135gr HPs. Never had a problem with any of the three pistols. I do shoot reduced loads in matches (IPSC) for fast followup shots. The reduced loads are 170gr cast semi wadcutters at 1000fps with Red Dot, Bullseye, or 700X.

Tanfoglio found a problem with their new slides and changed their machining to eliminate a stress point that was causing some slide cracking. Tanfoglio stands behind their pistols 110% and if you have problems don't bother with EAA, go to the Tanfoglio website and look around.

Too bad you exempted the best 10mm out there, the G20. Light, accurate, simple, rugged, middle-of-road price. What else could you want?

Almost anything that is not Glock......Plastic is meant for keggar cups.
In this order, Dan Wesson PM 10, Dan Wesson Razorback, Colt Delta Elite, S&W 1006.
I don't really care for Kimber 1911's or S&W revolvers that come with hollow triggers and empty hammers. (no firing pin)

I know some of you will tell me my opinion smells like my hole and my retort will be "what are you doing smelling my hole?"
Best thing to do is buy whatever firearm tickles your own hole.

Cheers
