Well I guess it's that time of the year...I'm getting calls about this little marketing wonder....No guns really out for it, barrels are coming and some are custom made...now onto the need or desire for one of these things.

We've been getting the press releases for over 6 months on the cartridge and I still can't figure it out except it's marketing.Nominal performance compared to the .17 HMR, same bullet, in a CCI necked down stinger case.

Now certainly I can fully understand the benefits of the .17HR and the older .17 Aguila (that was cool while it lasted)....but the .17 MachII?...

What do you expect from it and whay does it appeal to you...I am very curious as to the answers you will provide.

Is it that you can buy a barrel and have a new gun? Is it that the ammo will be "cheaper" than the .17HMR? but the performance will be somewhere in between the .22 LR and .17 HMR? What are you planning to hunt or do with it?

I was planning on getting a Green Mountain barrel in .17 HM2 for my 10-22 when they come out, but I've changed my mind. I wanted it because it was touted to have a flatter trajectory, less wind drift, and better terminal performance within squirrel hunting range. But, I think I'm going to stick with ole' faithful, and see if I can find a magnum to put a .17 HMR barrel on.

One thing confused me in your post. You said you can see the benefits of the .17 Aguila, but didn't know about the benefits of the HM2. The HM2 is very much like the Aguila, so they'd have the same benefits, more or less. In fact, you can chamber .17 Aguila ammo in a HM2 barrel and fire it. It will split the shoulder, but it's safe and ,according to tests, fairly accurate.

The ammo won't be a lot cheaper than the HMR. They use the same bullet, which is the most expensive part. There will be a tiny bit less powder and brass used, but the same amount of machine time and upkeep forming the brass, loading it, etc.

It is pretty much a drop-in barrel deal. The recoil impulse is sharper, so you may have to switch to different springs in a 10-22, but that's about the extent of it, from what I've read.

I was all over the .17HMR when it came out. And I am still impressed and like the round.

But oddly the 17MII hasn't given me any interest at all. I read a couple of articles in the rags and that stirred absolutly nothing.

If they get ammo at or below $12.00 for a brick regularly, I might start reconsidering.

Until then....no thanks.

It seems like it might be a slightly better mousetrap for rimfire silhoutte, BUT, only if it is allowed in. I know that .22 Magnum is forbidden, so I would guess that .17HMR is also not cool. I don't know about the .17MII.

The rimfire silhoutte option is, to me, the exciting part of the cartridge.

It's cute.I want one.That's my justification.:D

Also,I intend to get mine in as 10in barrel asm for a Ruger MKII.I don't remember seeing a handgun in either 17 or 22mag.Maybe an older Automag IV or something but that's it.Other than a Ruger single action that is.
