Currently I own a RIA Compact, Llama Mini Max Subcompact .45 and a Sig GSR Revolution. This past weekend I had a hankering for another 1911. My goal, especially with the GSR, has been to have a 1911 with all of the bells and whistles without building it from the ground up and breaking the bank. So, I put a blued Taurus 1911 (no rail as I will not have a 1911 with rail) on layaway. There's a number of problems with this.
First, other than my PT 92 (which I won't part with) I swore to never own a Taurus again. Second, while I was impressed with the Taurus 1911 the finish on the sample in the case was pretty well worn off in spots just from shop wear. Also, I've read of some quality control issues with the gun, but am willing to attribute much of that to the Internet where the detrius tends to settle to the bottom. Finally, there is a used 10 out of 10 full size stainless Smith 1911 for about $90 more. The trigger on the Smith is incredibly good. As the Taurus is new it is difficult to evaluate the trigger, or what it will be.
The used versus new and the money difference doesn't bother me. I really don't care so much about the ambi-safety that the Taurus has and the Smith doesn't have. I'm almost certain that the shop will let me swap the two guns, the Smith for the Taurus, if I want. Knowing what you know, which would you go for? To be completely candid, I really like Smith semi-autos and am wondering why I went with the Taurus.
