I'm looking to get a Tikka Varmint or Super Varmint, for some range fun. I'm looking into whether to get the .22-250 or the .223 models. I'd like to have accuracy as my primary goal, for up to and over 500 yards. I'm not looking to actually shoot varmints, only paper. The .223 looks to be a cheaper round to shoot in cost, but am I gaining/losing anything over the .22-250?

thanks for any input guys!

Over 500 yards I would prefer the 22-250. It holds velocity longer, and in a good bolt rifle with a heavy barrel, the recoil is negligible, you can shoot it all day long. At ranges shorter than that, I think you will get mostly the same results.

Your chances of finding a .223 with a faster rifling twist necessary for the heavy long bullets used in 500+ yard target shooting are much better then finding one in 22-250.

Most factory 22-250's come with a 1/14 barrel, and will not shoot much over 55 grain bullets at best.

The Tikka T3 Super Varmint comes with a 1/14 barrel in 22-250, and a 1/11 in .223.

Savage I would say would be your best bet for a fast twist barrel.
If your looking stricktly for a range gun I would recomend the 12fv I have it in .223 it has a 1-9" twist and for .22-250 it is 1-12".

Depends on your bullet

I have a Savage 12 BVSS in 22-250. (pardon me if I'm a little partial)

If you are shooting the heavier bullets you'll want to go with the .223. Brass should be easy to find if your range allows military/police access, you could also contact them because they might pickup the brass and store it to give away later.( I do this with 40S&W)

If your planing to use lighter bullets ~55gr. or below I'd go with the 22-250. with Winchester white box that you can pickup from your local Walmart i was getting just under 3" at 300 YDS

Now these commendations are based on the standard twist rates for the caliber .223 @ 1-8 or 9 twist and the 22-250 @ 1-12 or 14 twist.

If you go with the .223 and don't reload you may have an ammo issue, because of the current economic and political situation we are sitting in.

hope this helps...
