.22 LR Bolt Rifle

I've got 4 M69 Romanian trainers. They are shockingly accurate. I got mine when they were still $69 though. Costs me a couple of bricks of 22s every time I take the kids to the silhouette range though.

went shopping today. One of the bigger shops here in SA had a somewhat disappointing selection, especially under the $200 mark. Their website lists a lot more than they were willing to show me. They did have a Savage Mark II that I liked but I wanted to do a bit more looking. Anyone have any input on the Plinkster?
I've also been lookin around for a Romanian Trainer but can't seem to find any.

I went to a bunch of pawn shops while searching for Model 60s. There were quite a few nice bolt actions. A couple Model 510 remingtons, I would have picked one up to replace my 512 if they weren't single shot. There were a couple of cherry Marlin bolt actions, one nice savage, etc. Those were the ones I noticed, I ignored most of the bolt actions.

For your budget I'd go used. Should be a big selection of used in San Antone.

I bought two of the "Black Friday" semi-auto 702 Plinksters in '06 for my kids, they have been excellent, they were so good I went back this past "Black Friday" in '07. The riggers on the 702's aren't the greatest, but there is a guy over on rimfirecentral.com that has a procedure that cleaned them up nicely...

The 802 Bolt Actions are even better than the the triggers don't need any work...

For the stated purpose and budget, there is one clearly best answer: Any of the Remington 5'teen series that can be found in decent shape. A classic. One that will give pride of ownership many many years into the future. One that will be accurate, one that will be reliable, one that will only be worth more, never less than today. One that is a true bargain. One that will not be the easiest to find, but worth the effort and the wait. One that is the very best choice for the dollar today.

Shawnee..... obviously neither you or Rembrant read the orignal post, "...and i'm not going to spend more than about $150" or you wouldn't have wasted your time acusing anyone of "cheapskating". The man purely desires an inexpensive 22 rifle with iron sights. There are plenty of good, accurate rifles in the used and new market that will fill the bill. There's no necessity in flaming someones choice just because they don't share yours.

Thanks, Bearhands. I appreciate everyones' input, but telling me about a $300+ rifle is wasted typing. The salesman at the shop didn't get that one either. If you want to tell me about the coolest .22 you've ever seen and it comes at the low, low price of $10,000,000, I'd love to hear about it, but I'm not going to buy it if its over $150.

Update. I ended up with a Savage Mark II. Went and shot today and I like it, so far. Couldn't really tell how I shot because we forgot to bring binoculars, and the range doesn't let you go downrange to check your targets.

Does anyone know where to get spare mags for Savages? I couldn't find anything on their website, but i'm going to call them tomorrow.

Mag-wise try Wally World first. They sell Savage products and you just might find your local store has mags or can order one for you.

Next best source is online with the usual suspects...Midway USA, Natchez etc.

SAVAGE Mark II

Colinthepilot,

I had a SAVAGE Mk II F with the synthetic stock and found it was one of my favorite rifles. I preferred the slim plastic stock to the wooden one, though that is a matter of preference.

I found it was very accurate with FEDERAL and PMC match ammo and REMINGTON standard velocity hollow point.

The last one I saw for sale was at WALMART for in the low $120.00 range.

I just bought a Marlin 981t bolt action with a synthetic stock. Groups have been under and inch at 50 yards and that with only one quick session.
I agree, out of the .22LRs I've owned, the marlin 981 has been the most accurate.

Well, they're a little over what you want to spend, but AIM has these for $295:
