"Good Lord.............. another one. At 100 yards a 40 grain 22 mag is still providing 180 fpe compared to the 17 grain HMR at 146 FPE. I've got both and the only thing the HMR has going for it is a flatter trajectory. Past 100 or so yards you don't even get the explosive effect some seem to think is so great. Shoot the 22 mag Premire V-Max and the mag will walk all over the HMR. At 200 yards the HMR is dead as far as humane killing power but the 22 Mag will still put down PD's without them crawling off. Some things the HMR does better and some things the 22 mag does better but neither one will do everything better than the other."
Just so's you know, i've got both, and like both. a 17hmr is going faster at 100 yds, than a 22 mag is at the muzzle. A 20 grn gamepoint will knock 'em dead real quick. Like mr. Roy Weatherby once said, " speed kills!" He would be the one to know.
Arguing kill power at 150 between these two can be quite subjective, however , I have killed coyotes real dead with them inside of 75 yds.
What you cannot argue between the two , is that the 17 is faster, flatter, and far more accurate. And as we all know , shot placement is good for killing humanely, and very fast.
