Gotta go with the 10/22 here!
The model 60 would be neck & neck with it and most of the 60's I've had would shoot as well or better than the 10/22.
I have never been able to warm up to the 597 and have heard of too many issues with them.
My other vote would be Marlin 39 or Winchester 9422.

ive got all three, and have had several diff mods of all three. the marlin is allways more reliable, and also waaaaayyyy more accurate. rugers are quite fun though, that flush fit mag is very handy.

I'm on my 2nd Rem. 597. I had to send the first one back to Rem. because it fired out of battery and blew the extractor off of the bolt. They sent me a new one and I've been having failure to eject problems with it. At this point I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It is an accurate rifle, but it's aggravating to not be able to go through a 10 round magazine without jamming up 2 or 3 times. I do have plans to get a 10/22 one of these days, but I'm not going to give up on my 597 just yet.

i have two marlins model 60 and 70. 60 is the tube fed. and the 70 is clip fed. took my son shooting yesterday. after about an hour of shooting. we both agreed on the model 60 over the 70. That tube fed is so much easier to load than dealing with sore thumbs on the other. Both guns are very very accurate and easy to shoot. with almost no recoil at all.

10/22.

Think of it as the small block Chevy/Ford/Mopar of semi 22's.

Great gun out of the box.

Tons of goodies to make it run faster/better down the road.

Yes I have

At one time the kit stayed in the host rifle all the time. That was twenty years ago when I had a back yard range. I also had the .223 kit but in a blind frenzy I sold it for four times what I paid in 1995 or '96.:(

I own both a 10/22 and a marlin 60 and I have to say I haven't had any problems w/ either of them. I like the versatility of the 10/22 much better, there are aftermarket parts readily available for whatever you want to do. If I had to only have one it would be the ruger.....

I have the cheapo $140 597 from Wal-Mart. This gun is BORING. no jams, no malfunctions, the bullets go exactly where I want them to.

Oh, wait- I guess that means this gun is FUN.

I have both and love both. But if I could only have one it would be the 10-22. Like a Chevy car from the 60s or 70s they are the most easliy modifyable thing on the planet, but work great stock.

Well, I have a 597 magnum and frankly, I think it's a danged fine rifle. The .22LR I gather from other folks is as accurate as my magnum. It shoots tiny little one hole groups at 50 yards, is 100 percent reliable, and is a nice adult sized gun that fits like a rifle. Now, I really like my 10/22, but it's not as accurate and it is a bit like shooting a kid's air rifle, but it's very compact and that's a bonus. It's a ton of fun and well built. I cannot say any one of these choices is bad, but you'll save 50 bucks with the Remington and it's a more accurate gun that the Ruger and at least as accurate, probably more so than the Marlin. I don't own a marlin, but know lots of folks that do and have shot 'em and I know they're good, accurate guns and reliable and have been around forever. If you have many pawn shops around your area with decent deals, you'll likely find a M60 in one of 'em for cheap, common as dirt. The 10/22s are higher, but they were cult guns for a long time, all sorts of do dads you can buy, make 'em into anything from a tacticool plinker to a full on match rifle. You won't find that aftermarket for the Remington or the Marlin if that matters to you.

Frankly, I have the Remington, the Ruger, and now I wanna buy another 5 or 10 cheap .22s and want a Marlin somewhere, sometime along with maybe a Nylon 66 and a few other classics. I like .22 rifles, always have, and I only got five right now. I need more. :D I can't say I've ever owned a .22 I didn't like and they're so danged affordable, heck, just seems natural to collect them.

My Ruger is neat, all stainless, Hogue over molded stock, rugged to the max. :D
