270w vs 6.5 creedmor

I know a few guys who make their 25-06 brass from 270 cases, and you’re right, they are long. But these guys say they like the longer necks and the 270 brass is stronger (probably true). The longer necks allow them to trim precisely and they prefer to neck size. YMMV.

I kind of doubt that stronger brass statement since the case is based on the 30-06 even though the pressure standards of the three (25-06, 270, 30-06) are slightly different with the 30-06 rated the lowest. When it was a wildcat, shooters made brass exactly how we are talking about now. It was originally called the 25 Niedner.

Anyway, I did one batch back in the early 90s and it was tough with the equipment I had then. Now I have a press rated for 50 BMG, plus I use Imperial for a lube, so the job would be easier. Back then, I had a proportion that failed when the neck pushed down into the case instead of sizing all the way. After sizing, it's a heck of a length to trim, because the 270 neck starts longer and gets longer still when you squeeze it down. All in all, it was a pain.

Were I to do it now, I would get a 6.5-06 neck die for the initial sizing to shrink the neck down some as an intermediate step and I have power to trim with. Or, I would just buy 25-06 brass and be done with it. Anyway, I no longer have the rifle and have no current plans to get another one.

Wow, you guys are talking some serious range. Perhaps I've underestimated, I was thinking my 18" 7-08 would be a 250 yard max situation. I was staring up the powerline the other day and I saw some movement on the ridgeline probably 350-400 yards about. I wouldnt take the shot because I'm not skilled or experienced enough with my rifle, but the way you guys are talking a 300+ yard shot would be no problem for a .308 or 7-08?

Well, that's the thing. If you know they are 350 yards out it's a chip shot. If you think they are 350 yards out it's a crapshoot.

Well I would not spring for a 300 yd. shot with a 308 unless I could not get closer. But if I could not get closer I would hoped to have zeroed around 3" high at 100 yds and then try to hold real steady, maybe just a little high of center. Without looking at the table I am guessing a 165 gr. 308 would be a few inches low at that range. 7-08 a little less so.

Actually the .308 is very capable,. I would suggest you check a ballistics chart before you decide anything. It was routine for experts to hit targets at 600 meters without scopes with issue ammo and rifles. And the .308 has over 1000 ft./lbs. of energy at that range. Snipers like my friend Rick made kill shots beyond 1000 Meters. But in my opinion most people should not take shots over 400 yards on game because shot placement and bullet performance regardless of caliber is questionable. I have seen it done by great shots but don't recommend it unless you are certain that you have the right bullets and place the shot.

6.5. Very accurate, flat shooter, low recoil. Don't worry about the barrel life on a hunting rifle, unless you are doing something that requires a high round count like shooting prairie dogs every day.
good point

I've noticed that, whenever these discussions about one cartridge vs another appear, the more minute, esoteric, and sometimes just mythical the "advantages" of one over the other actually are, the longer the discussion can go on, and the more emphatic the argument can occasionally become. It's to the point that once such a discussion reaches several pages and over, oh say, 100 posts, I just admit to myself that there is NO practical difference between the two rounds be discussed, and that for hunting situations, no one will be able to tell them apart by the reaction of the game being hunted.

Just something I think I have noticed.
