As I live in a one-room studio by myself with no animals one door and one window, I keep a pistol under my pillow and a tactical-style streamlight flashlight closest to me on the night stand (ahem, I mean milkcrate).
Grab both, wrist under, saftey off, light on, identify threat.
The only reason I would turn the light on slightly before is due to the finger saftey (having it down the rail, not on the trigger), the DA first round, and the fact that my apartment is very small -- I would be close enough to not unswitch the saftey before someone go to my bed.
Also, being in the apartment next to the laundry room, several neighbors over the past 6 months could have seen this situation from the wrong end had they been successfull in kicking down my door... saftey never comes off until the door's open though, and luckily, nobody's come through it.
Oh, and don't forget to make those battery powered cameras securely wired, not easy-install wireless ones, which intruders can use to watch YOU.
