3 AM Door kicked in, intruder inside!

As I live in a one-room studio by myself with no animals one door and one window, I keep a pistol under my pillow and a tactical-style streamlight flashlight closest to me on the night stand (ahem, I mean milkcrate).

Grab both, wrist under, saftey off, light on, identify threat.

The only reason I would turn the light on slightly before is due to the finger saftey (having it down the rail, not on the trigger), the DA first round, and the fact that my apartment is very small -- I would be close enough to not unswitch the saftey before someone go to my bed.

Also, being in the apartment next to the laundry room, several neighbors over the past 6 months could have seen this situation from the wrong end had they been successfull in kicking down my door... saftey never comes off until the door's open though, and luckily, nobody's come through it.

Oh, and don't forget to make those battery powered cameras securely wired, not easy-install wireless ones, which intruders can use to watch YOU.

It does need to be an explosion to get thru the doors I got... they open outwards (they always do here, I keep wondering why not everywhere?) and are built on a steel grid chassis with wood lining on steel frames, double Abloy locks and hinge studs. Deity knows why they're made that way but I'm happy with it.

Our dog will want to investigate, which I'll happily allow. Yes, I love the creature but that's its job, going into harm's way in case. And I'll follow, with shorts and shoes, a fat Mag-lite plus optional accessories. The better half will be on the cell phone and I'll have mine on me as well.

I would assume one of two things is occuring:

1: Intruder is a person in need of help, in a panic, and forgetting to yell, because something has happenned. For instance: A tree got hit by lightning, and fell on their car, taking out my powerline and my phone line on the way. The passenger is severely injured, and a live powerline is whipping about. The driver, panicking, runs to the house, yells for help (which isn't heard), then busts down the door and is frantically fumbling around for a phone and/or medical equipment.

Or:

2: The intruder has bad intentions that aren't limited to burglary. The fact that they cut the phone line implies that they are deliberately entering a residence they know is occupied, and they don't want the occupants to be able to call for help...

If they just wanted to steal everything in my house, they would do so in the daytime when I am not there.

With that in mind, I would grab my shotgun and an ammo belt, give the pistol to the girlfriend, and pump that shotgun as loudly as possible, followed by a vocal announcement of my intentions to defend myself.

Then I would probably move into the spare bedroom, where my 'gun room' is located....It was an addition to the house, and has what was a 'front door' between it and the rest of the house, where I would asses the situation. If the BG's appear to have left, we would sit tight until daylight....we don't get cell service at the house.

If they remain in the house, sooner or later it would become necessary to clear it. It would be too hard to stay awake and alert all night with intruders in my house...

If they went outside and remained there, I would probably have to go out after them at some point, or try to crawl out a back window...I would worry that they would burn the house down around us, if getting to us really is their goal, and would not want to remain inside.

Of course, if anyone came after my girlfriend or I, I would stop them, with the shotgun if necessary.

After moving into our new house (we are renting) it became apparent that the last tenets, well, liked to grow things. Our landlady warned us that she gave the last tenets the boot because she caught them growing weed. I had a mental image of a hippy with a plant or two, and I didn't really worry about it. But after we moved in, it became apparent that whoever lived there last had a serious growing operation. We found hundreds of pounds of miracle grow, and other growing mediums, grow lights, dozens of planters, timers, etc. Enough stuff to indicate that it was a real business, and not just a hobby to supply some ones personal habit.

I am worried that some misguided and misinformed people will fail to realize that they last tenets have moved out, and will break into my house looking for drugs.

lets just say a few things here first.
1. the only firearm in my room is my rifle
2. my parents room is next to mine and it has 2 shotguns, 1 old 22, and a 30-30
3. my little brother, in the loft, has a shotgun and a 22
4. my house is at the end of a long gravel road, those that find it find it intentionally.
5. no cell phone reception.
6. all the rooms are at one end of the house, if I shoot out my door there is no danger of me hitting anyone in any of the other bedrooms.

so, the intruder breaks in. only I wake up. I grab my rifle and load with holopoints. leave the door to my bedroom door open as it usually is and it makes a deal of noise when closed. wait. the great goom that all the bedrooms open into only has one entrance. scan the room and wait. call for identification. if none is heard prepare to defend myself/family. shoulder weapon, shoot center mass if necessary.
