While walking through cabelas Ive noticed that .30-06 Nosler brass in on sale. Before buying a few hundred I figured I grill you guys on it. My biggest concern is case capacity. Ill would use these in conjunction with some 180 Northforks that my debit card just gifted me. I could stay with Win brass but they are priced so closely. Thanks as always.

Nosler has been producing extremly good press. I would not hesitate to use any of their brass. Pricewise it has been considered premium quality brass.

Yes, it's very good brass but the case capacity may differ a bit from Winchester so you may need to tune your load a bit.

I made a similar switch recently in 243. I had to add .3 grains to regain the accuracy. But that cost me around 25 rounds to figure that out.

It is heavy brass. As much as 10% heavier than Winchester. This makes all my load data for Win or Rem cases not applicable to Nosler brass. Also most Nosler brass is Federal brass that's been weigh sorted, deburred, chamfered etc. Some is also made by Norma but the vast majority I've used was Fed brass.

How do you know if the brass you buy from Nosler is made by Norma or Federal?

Cause Norma brass has a distinct look from their annealing process. Federal you cannot see any evidence of annealing. I guess I've bought enough of both over the years I can tell by looking at them.

Interesting...I've been loading for years and I can't tell brand by look alone. And even if I had an idea, I certainly wouldn't profess it as gospel....although this is the internet.

Is it a bit arrogant to assume since you can't do something, anyone who says they can is a liar?

You've never noticed the differences in what new brass looks like? The pinkish hue of Rem brass annealing? The thick necks of Hornady and Federal? They all have typical characteristics if you pay attention. But then I also anneal brass and turn necks on my competition guns so perhaps I pay more attention to that stuff. I also weight sort my brass which is another indicator the 7mm RM Nosler brass I have is made by Federal.

This is opinion not "gospel".

Horsemany,

Regarding arrogance, I could say the same to you.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but the bottom line here is that your post came off as factual and I felt it was misleading.

Maybe you can, maybe you can't....

I stand by my findings about Nosler brass regardless of how you "felt" about my post. I've weighed them and loaded hundreds of them. They weigh the same as Federal brass of the same cartridge, trim the same, size the same, look the same.

I'm not the only one who noticed. Do some google searches and see what others are saying. Or don't. I don't really care what you believe.

All in all I don't think Nosler brass is bad. It's just thicker and has noticeably less case capacity than Win or R-P brass. I get better velocity from Win cases and can make them just as uniform as Nosler with a little work.

I can tell a difference by the shape of the primer pocket with many brands. Some brands have a more friendly pocket shape that allow primers to go in very smooth, others have a very sharp edge.

Most Nosler brass is made by Federal, they stamp Nosler on the case. Do what I did, Call Nosler and ask them! Nosler sorts and processes the brass, mostly by hand, hence the price. But this is something we can do for ourselves if we want to.

Lets keep this High Road!
