That is the nicest saiga conversion I have seen. I wish I had that kind of skill. If you ever get a chance pm me a short note on how you did it.
They are actually not that bad. I'm surprised more people don't do hand guard conversions.
Top cover is a surplus Romanian AK-74 or AK-M, just needed a slight trim to fit.
Gas tube is a surplus AK-74, there is some heavy filing/grinding to make it work with the thicker Saiga barrel. Just line the two gas tubes up and you'll see what has to change.
Lower retainer was made using a Surplus AK-74 retainer, it has a split collar to hold it on the barrel. If you don't have a whole shop full of tools, I'd suggest buying one that Dinzagarms has. Same concept and it works very well.
Wood stock set are Romanian surplus that I got for $15, it was a little rough but after it was stripped and steamed most of the dings had smoothed out.. Refinish was whatever stain and spar varnish I could find in the flammable cabinet. Lower hand guard needed fitting to allow the larger barrel to pass through, I used a bridgeport mill and end mills, but a rotary tool would get the job done.
Bakelite pistol grip had some tufts sticking out.. Smoothed them down and used a little epoxy to seal the fibers down.
Trigger guard is reused reshaped and tig welded to the mag catch tower.
Trigger group is smoothed but otherwise a normal Tapco G-2, I did shim the trigger and hammer to take the side play out.
Bolt carrier is polished and sprayed with a clear coat.
Paint was some sort of bake on industrial machine paint. Pretty much like gunkote or duracoat.
