i would say it is ok to use 3in1 oil, but its not the ideal oil for use in your gun.

A gun show find taught me about 3 in one. An old J C Higgins pump (AKA High Standard Flite King) was ignored near death. I brought it home and cleaned and removed the rust in , protected it against the elements with 3 in one, a week later, it needed rescuing again. This time it was protected with Break-free, none of the rust came back. FYI.

Oiling WILL NOT HURT case hardening. not at all. it is not dye it is a chemical change to the surface of the steel, claiming a oil will damage the colors is just hogwash.

i like the idea of a real thin oil now and again, for deep penetration purposes, to help keep atmosphere away, then followed up most of the time with a nice thick , juicy oil or wax.

Thanks Barbara for the info.

Color case-hardening will wear down and fade away. Most manufacturers cover the case-hardening with a clear coat to protect the finish from wear. Oil will break down the clear coat and leave the case-hardening exposed. That is why you do not oil case-hardening.

pete f, hope you enjoy a little hogwash!!!!!!!!

What fantacmet said.

Hardware store machine oils have been in regular use for machine and household tools a very, very long time indeed. I doubt that any of the "dedicated" (but plain) gun oils have any better lubricating properties.

The only reason I personally use some of the gun products are the increased levels of environmental protection they offer; a few like Tetra Gun Grease that can be buffed dry in barrel bores providing protection while at the same time being "ready to shoot".

Renaissance Wax might be a good protectant of case hardening.

3 in1

I'd say it just like lookin at a Prince Albert can!!- way past it's time no more than I know be gun-oil specific. Tech has came along way

Skimming a copy of Rifle Magazine today I came across a piece about a new Brownells oil called "Friction Defense Gun Oil". Item # 083-000-022.

Sounds very hi-tech and all that; but the most significant claim IMO is that it works at low and high temperatures, and does not sling off. Now that sounds interesting, and I will have to try it sometime.
