40 S&W becoming extinct?

I have an Sig P226 Equinox in .40 S&W that is the nice gun I never use. With that said I thought maybe I’d trade it in on a Shadow 2. It might just be the shop but they offered next to nothing for it on trade claiming .40’s have no value. Is this the case or is it the shop? Next week I might try to work something out with my regular shop.
Not extinct.

Extinct is something like .44 Henry rimfire.

I could see the day within the next decade or so when no new pistols would be made in 40 S&W. I think that is a real possibility. Partly because of the trend toward 9mm and partly because of the resurgence of 10mm. 40 S&W pistols are being squeezed on both sides. But there are too many guns out there for manufacturers to stop making ammo in 40 S&W.

This is absolutely true. The abandonment of .40 by LE was the absolute death knell for any further promotion of the cartridge. I have about 10 handguns in that caliber. Most of them because I got a "really good deal" on them because they were being abandoned.

.40 ammo will be around for a long time BECAUSE a lot of people who might never have bought into .40 also took adantage of those "good deals." That said, I think I've got a 9mm conversion barrel for each of those "good deals." For $40, why not?

Thanks to the high-quality, dirt-cheap Turkish and Fillipino 1911's that have appeared, everyone is in love with 45 ACP again. I find abandoned 45 ACP brass on the ground at my range frequently lately. Prior years, people held onto their 45 brass like it was gold. I'm gonna quit picking it up when I finish filling my bucket. And I'm almost there.

Not "extinct". The 44 Henry Rimfire-now THAT'S extinct. Rather it has gone out of fashion, like the 38 Super, 41 Magnum-10MM Auto, it will survive as a "niche" cartridge.

Nothing to see here.... It's NOT Breaking news that gun and pawn shops offer next to nothing for guns, and then resell them for much more. If you want to sell for a decent price, sell it in a private sale or on Gunbroker with excellent pictures.

Other than that, 40s&w isn't going anywhere irregardless of all the pontification on gun forums. Their are a plethora of self-defense and range ammo options for 40s&w ammo, and there are a sizable demographic who still likes and shoots 40s&w. Just about every place that sells handgun ammo has 40s&w in stock. 40s&w is more popular and available than several other calibers one the market with .32 calibers that some rave about while at the same time claiming 40s&w is dead.

10mm craze will die down and 40 s&w conversion barrels will be bought. For those who dont reload it will keep ther 10mm gun running for a little less money.

Can't you already shoot .40 in a 10mm barrel?

Might need to reduce the spring though. I find .40 to be a bit spotty on reliability in my 10mm-converted Glock 21 when I'm running the Gen-4, 45 ACP recoil spring.

Don't forget to get a .357 SIG conversion barrel for your .40

This one works in my beater Glock 22's with the standard G22 recoil spring and G22 extractor and G22 magazine.

Ammo is a bit expensive. But I handload. Remember its a BOTTLENECK cartrdige. So you gotta lube the cases to resize.

10-cent .357 SIG bullets

Yes, many are following the trend purchased 10mm. Many who are buying 10mm aren't outdoorsmen who are hunting, worried about killing grizzlies, or are carrying full power 10mm. They basically pay more for ammo to shoot 10mm that's loaded to be 40s&w because they falsely believe they have some type of powerful one shot man stopper. That will eventually wear off.

There are some solid deals on the police trade in 40 cal guns. For a while a local shop had some in all the top names Sig, HK, Berretta, Glock and so on. Most for $275 to $400 depending on what make model and what all it came with. I am starting to see some trade in ammo start to show up at OK prices.

Food for thought.
A 9mm barrel fits and works just fine in a Sig P226 chambered originally for 40.
Like the XD .40 I gave to one of my nephews. (He liked it the most of what he shot that day)

I have a Springfield XD in 40 , 4 inch barrel that is 20 years old. I like the 40 caliber round a lot and I am looking at buying another one either a Springfield XD 40 , 5 inch barrel or a Rock Island 1911 Rock Ultra FS 5 inch barrel. I am also going to look at the S&W M&P in 40 and some used guns in 40 that our LGS has.

I reload 40 and find it to be a very accurate and versatile cartridge and will not abandon it. I think it is in somewhat the same place as another cartridge I reload 38 Super.

Straight up, it's the local shop. NOT that 40 is this or that. They probably have either a hard time moving 40 in ammo or guns and decided to not get into them: new or used. Happens a lot. That being said. 40sw isn't going away. What others have said. good time to put that pistol in the safe with a good preservation. in time you'll come to love it again. AND it will be there. Keep it.

10mm was dead and the dirt was being shoveled back into the grave but along came a resurgence. I still think 40sw is as good as it ever was and plenty of people thought it was pretty good. 40sw may not have a resurgence around the corner, but it might. Either way it’s going nowhere in terms of ammo extinction, and the guns are quite plentiful. If they aren’t offering much in trade then keep it and buy a new gun outright. There are better deals to be had with cash anyway.

With so much talk of .40 being basically given away I have managed to not find one of those smoking deals that everybody and their brother are talking about. Seems like maybe there’s still more life in the .40 than what’s being let on.

I think I’ll be hanging on to this one. I’ll always have a .40 of some kind. In my opinion I think it’s a great caliber plus the fact that not so long ago you couldn’t find 9mm anywhere. Guess I could get a 357 sig barrel to switch things up.
Or get a 9mm barrel. Or, if you really don't want the gun, sell it yourself rather than trying to trade it in. Never worth trading a gun in unless you just can't wait for some reason.

Yes, I purchased a gun NIB from my LGS for $450 several years ago. Came back a month later to attempt to trade it in basically still brand new, and they offered me $100. I've been at my LGS and seen customers bring in Glocks, Sigs, and other guns even in 9mm to sell them for criminally low prices to the point I was tempted to get their attention and offer them $100 more to sell to me and not the shop.

How old are you? Got time to wait for the FBI to have another shooting that goes badly, decide the 9mm isn’t as good as they told everyone it is?

The will spend thousands of man hours. Millions of dollars and decide a .395 caliber is the perfect cartridge. The ammo makers will make the ammo. The gun companies will compete for the contract, and departments everywhere will switch to the new .395 Federal load.

9mm will flood the used gun market.
