well I broke down and started all over last night. I loaded 3 at 20.4, 3 at 21, 3 at 21.6, 3-22, 3-22.6, 3-23, 3-23.6 and 5 at 24gr. I worked this up before and 24gr gave me speed and accuracy at 50 but 100 seemed to open up so I'm starting over and shooting all at 100yards and see what happens.

I went up in .6gr increments because ive worked this up before to 24gr imr4227 and I was running low on primer-powder, bullets so trying to conserve a little bit.

well I figured out the reason the reloads shots so crappy. the screw that attaches it to the base were loose. I probably didn't tighten it when I was swapping scopes on the gun. shot 23.6gr of imr 4227 at 100 yards and clover leafed them so ill be running that load from now on. 24gr was decent for hunting at 100yards but didn't group tight.

My Ruger .44Mag Carbine using Nosler 240grn. JSP bullets will generally group all 5 bullets at 100 yards using 2.5" using WW296 24.0 grans, I've shot and killed several whitetails from 45-75 yards and none of them complained, (little humor), as this will do the trick. Believe me I've tried every trick in the book to get it to shoot as accurately as humanely possible but 2.5" with that particular rifle is the best I could get. Perhaps the same with your Handi-rifle. Actually it is a brush type rifle intended for much closer shooting distances. In the heavy cedars of the Northern Mid West the furthest shooting lane has generally been less than say 100 yards, as I'm sure you are aware.

im going to run 5 at 23.6 and 5 at 24gr and see what it does just to be sure before next week. I purchased the gun just for the close up brush gun type hunting but my brother will be barrowing it and shots would be 50-75 yards so figured sight it at 100 and be done. I can keep them in the middle diamond and lower circles on the target in the link at 100yards with 24gr and 23.6 3 shots in the diamond 2 touched in the bull and the other was 1-2 inches away wich was probably me. I've never shot a deer over 75yards yet but ya never know.

try the handi rifle stickies on grey beard outdoors fourm. I went thru this same hassle with a scoped 44 mag handi. I killed a few deer with mine but it just would not group consistently at 100 yds. I started with loose scope mounts, I tried cast bullets, my best load was with 265g FTX hornady. I kinda got aggravated with the whole situation and started checking for a used Thompson center encore. as luck would have it I found one in a nearby town in 35 whelen. problem solved. the 35 whelen will shoot Moa out to 200yds. the 44 mag handi is not a 100 yd gun and not a precision rifle. the Encore cost about $800 so I suppose you get what you pay for!! unbelievably a 35 whelen in single shot is considered a primitive weapon in LA!!

good luck,
Bull

Sounds like to me that your scope may be loose in it's mounts. I was just at the range with some friends of mine and one of them was having trouble with zeroing in. I told him to check his scope and it was so loose that you could easily twist it in it's mounts. After he tightened it up, no problem.
