45 acp brass: small or large primers?

I was given 6 gallon Ziploc bags full of spp 45acp brass this year when I went to a private range with some old (er) timers, they hate them (I think they have progressives) I don't mind them since I prime off press. I can't tell the difference in any of my 45s. I agree with others, If all your other pistol rounds use SPP look for SPP that way you wouldn't have to look for LPP

the people who reload a lot of it and have for decades been set up to load large primer brass on their Dillons will literally give me small primer brass just to get rid of it.
That's the reason I first started collecting SPP .45ACP cases. After a while, other shooters at matches would walk up to me and just offer me their SPP case for free. I now have close to 5k cases.

I first started collecting SPP 45 ACP brass for my revolvers, I could reduce the trigger pull below what would reliably ignite a LPP. They were also all kept segregated by the use of moon clips. GAP brass is what I use now because it has the SPP and doesn’t require tools to moon and demoon.

Still have lots of bags of the SPP brass, everyone keep giving me though.

You make a good point. I shoot the spp .45acp rounds primarily thru my 1873 Pietta convertible, altho they work just fine in my 1911-A1. I really can not tell any difference. Just another option.

I can't say that I like the SPP brass. I consider it to be a brilliant solution to a non-existent issue. I see no benefit to it whatsoever except to make things more difficult for reloaders, especially now after seeing the Starline data that 243winxb posted the link to. I thought some of those differences in velocity were significant.

Yes, I use a progressive press for most of my handgun loads. I don’t shoot at ranges but I somehow often end up with a few pieces of SPP brass mixed in with mine. It seems to magically appear and it’s a show stopper for my Dillon press.

So the way I see it, for whatever reason, they have succeeded in making .45 ACP more time consuming to reload since we must now sort by primer size as an additional step.

Hahaha, the horse is not only dead...but mostly decomposed, the coyotes have carried off the bones, and the skull is hanging on somebody's front porch in Southern California because they bought on ebay for 500.00 bucks as a buffalo skull.

But I'm having a good arthritis day..so I'll keep typing, lol. If you're shooting a lot of +P, small primer lasts longer...the web doesn't collapse as fast, and the pockets don't stretch out. If you're shooting mellow 45 acp range ammo, large primer will last almost forever. But, the smart reloader keeps them both: A) no matter which primer is unobtanium, you have something in 45 acp and B) when all your friends and everybody at the range hates on small primer...it's easy to build up a nice supply of it for free.

And 10mm. Don’t forget that is now in the wild too.

That was my take too. So, I made this.

That is freakin' cool! You know, some of the stuff I've seen you fab up...you should be selling! There is a market for some of the automation you've displayed on here. Now that 10mm and 308, and others are also suffering the small/large dilemma...this is the only really viable sorter for them I've seen yet.

That’s not the only one I built, just the only one that culls SPP cases concurrent with reloading.

I also built this stand alone machine.

Some of the stuff I have videos of are things I don’t possess anymore because I was contracted to build them. Some of them cost the customer so much I haven’t even posted videos of them. I am not sure how many of the different things I have made, I could get down to a price point that your average reloader would spend their hard earned cash on. The annealing machine is the only thing I have build more than a few of. Thanks for the compliment.

I think a 3D printed one would be possible and neat but sharing files isn’t a real money maker either…
